There are no call ups, and they are usually told before press conference, so maybe Jose didn't do it this time(he doesn't have to after all, it's not champions league).

As for him not playing, like I've said in match thread, Branca said something about transfer papers not arriving yet at Inter, so maybe that is the reason. He also said at the same time, that he hopes they will arrive this evening.

Yes i know but the question was not longer than 25 minutes ago, I don't understand why they'd ask the question and he'd answer it the way he did (without any input from Jose) if they knew he was out of the squad list.

Edit: Mourinho just said that Muntari and Quaresma aren't on the squad list for the derby

The way they juggle with 4/5 years(Wes saying it is 5 year decision etc.), it seems, he indeed signed 4 year deal, with an option for 5th year, as was reported somewhere.

Press conference

Sneijder: "Finally I am here"
Friday, 28 August 2009 14:58:32

APPIANO GENTILE - Accompanied by José Mourinho, technical director Marco Branca and transfer market consultant Gabriele Oriali, Inter's latest signing Wesley Sneijder was unveiled to the Italian media in today's press conference at the training ground.

This is what the 25-year-old Dutch midfielder, who underwent his first training session with fitness coach Rui Faria this morning before making his way to the press room, had to say:

We know that the operation for your signing has been quite a contest. Are you happy to join Inter?
"Well first of all thank you. I think Inter is an amazing club, one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I'm very happy to be a player of Inter. It has been long, but finally I am here."

How much do you like pressure. You're not here to be an ordinary player.
"Well, to talk about pressure... I've been a player of Real Madrid and there was pressure there too. I can handle the pressure. I want to play games now and prove myself to all the people here."

What is your opinion of Mourinho?
"Of course he's one of the biggest coaches in the world. I saw him in Chelsea and here at Inter as well, I'm very happy to be a player of Inter and a player of Mourinho and I want to prove myself even more."

Your shirt is the number 10. What is your favourite role?
"I think I'm an attacking midfielder, so playing behind the strikers, yes, it's my position. The shirt number? If I start playing in this position it will be perfect."

The last Dutch number 10 at Inter was Bergkamp. Did you talk to him? Did you know that his adventure here was full of ups and downs? Are you ready for the derby?
"Actually I didn't speak to Dennis Bergkamp before but I think he's an example for every young player. He's an amazing player with lots of qualities. I hope I can do the same as what he did here during the good times. My shirt number isn't important. I just want to help the team. The derby? Yes, I would obviously like to play the derby. Everyone wants to play the big games. Will I play? I can't say anything about this game. We will see tomorrow."

Could you please explain to us why the negotiations were a bit slow?
"Yes, I know but I think that life at Real Madrid was perfect. My situation changed a lot in the last week. You have to talk about your future, think about your future. If you sign a four or five-year deal you have to be one hundred percent sure. Last week I was one hundred percent sure and the deal went through."

What do you know about the Italian championship and Inter?
"Like I said before, Inter is one of the biggest teams in the world and for sure in Italy. There were some Dutch players before in this club and some big players before. We have a great team in this moment so I think I will have a great time here. I had one guy in Ajax before, the team manager, his name was David Endt and he said 'one day you will play for Inter'. Yesterday he called me and said 'finally you have joined my club'."

When you arrived you said you had already spoken to Mourinho. What did he say to convince you to join Inter?
"It's important when you make decisions that the coach is 100% behind you and I can say that Mourinho is 100% behind me so this was a very big part of my decision."

Did you choose the number 10 shirt or did Mourinho give it to you?
"It was given to me. I don't know if it was the coach, but I suppose so."

How much did the 2010 World Cup influence your decision to join Inter? Were you given any advice or pressure from the Dutch national team coach?
"Actually I was thinking about my future and to sign a new contract for a new team for a long long time, not just for one tournament. I wasn't thinking about the World Cup, I wanted to be sure about my future. If I stayed at Real Madrid and didn't play that would have been another thing, but now I'm at Inter and I have to play my game. The World Cup wasn't the biggest point that influenced my decision."

Would you have preferred Real Madrid to Barcelona in the first Champions League game?
"No. I don't mind. It's nice to play against a Spanish team and to play against Barcelona will be amazing. I'm happy to play against Barcelona."

INTER FINALLY HAS A FREE KICK SPECIALIST AGAIN THIS IS INCREDIBLE, TEAMS WILL NOT LONGER FOUL US TO STOP PLAY KNOWING WE WONT SCORE

First of all i wish shneijder all the best and let's hope he will be the famous number 10 we were looking for (as for this i'm sad that he underestimates so much the fact that he has been given this number by mou).
As for the free kick stuff , honestly first of all i wish that he could be the one to give the important through balls that our strikers need so much because we already have a specialist in free kicks in mario but ibra's egoism last year didn't give him the possibility to prove himself but the main problem in my opinion is to get this free kicks because in the last 2 matches i don't remember any of them given to us except the one shooted by eto in the supercopa.

He doesn't have to because i'm awared that he is very able in free kicks and i'm happy about that .. What i meant is that mario also is a good FK taker and we didn't use him last year as we should had and also that we need a player to take free kicks(meaning dribling defenders) and give through balls and i want sneijder to do this two things rather than shooting great FK.

Adriano, actually inter.it doesn't report anything about Mourinho saying if Sneijder could play in the derby. However, gazzetta.it quotes him saying that he has never played with his teammates, so he will not play, 100%. I think that'll be the case, maybe bench but it's a slim chance.

I cant see it as a problem.

he must NOT be Burnt out and give the chance those fucking media to shout him immediately after a weaker performance.

i think he isn't knowing his team-mates at all. His playing is useless tomorrow.

There will be a 2 week break, he must be inserted to the team carefully, so Inter should ask Dutch Fa to let him stay in Milano and not to go to play NT games. They are qualified for WC.

Luka
28 Aug 09, 21:22
I on the other hand, still think he should play.

First he doesn't look like a person with "Rickys" mentality, I don't think the average performance would be a problem for him.

Second, if he will play now, and he won't do great, Jose has a perfect excuse to protect him. In say two weeks, there will be too much of expectations on him, because it will be building all this time.

Luka (or anyone), can the squad really be changed any time before the match begins, or is there a number of hours before the match by which a final list needs to be in?

Luka (or anyone), can the squad really be changed any time before the match begins, or is there a number of hours before the match by which a final list needs to be in?

With this I'm not certain, but I think there are only restrictions when you play CL(with the call-ups).

About changing the squad just before the game, lets look it with common sense.

Injuries, prior to the games happened. How can anybody proof, that the player is actually injured, and not that the coach just wanted to change him right before the game?

I think the only logical restriction are call-ups for the game. The coach then can put anybody he wants, and he can decide even 5 minutes before the game, but he can't put somebody that wasn't on the list of call-ups.

In the league, you don't have that. If you had, coaches would just call-up everybody all the time. We saw that sometimes Jose "called up" everybody. That was the case couple of times last season, if my mind doesn't play tricks on me.

Interesting. The madrid fans that I have talked to seem to feel he played better just behind the front 2 as opposed to when he played deeper.

Thats because he played better on his first season as AM, but lost his ball control after his injury.

Any inter fan that only saw second half of 0607 and first half of 0708 will say Deki plays much better as AM opposed to CM, which is not entirely true. Deki never found his 0607form yet.

They both never fully recovered from their injury, at least skill-wise. I hope one day they both get back to what they used to be.

Has a thunderbold in his feet, and will only improve.

I thought he was great considering he was just thrown into the squad. His performance was so-so, I was actually more impressed with his defense and counterattacking than his offense, but when you consider he played after 1 day of training with this team you can obviously see this guy will be huge for us this year. I was wrong about something though with him, he is not a Lazio Stankovic, he is like him but is also very good with the ball like Diego and co, he is a mix of Lazio Stankovic and any trequarista on the market right now like VDV / Diego etc...which makes him perfect for us. Also his freekicks will improve, they are the same as his shots and out of his 3 shots 2 were goal bound.

Hopefully this wont happen and i think it wont, you can see that he is a player who is confident in himself and his abilities and performed great in his first match in the biggest derby in the world. Quaresma when i see him play i see a player that is trying but he himself down inside is thinking that he wont succeed, he has no confidence in himself or his skills. Who wouldnt want an in form Quaresma as a starter in his team?

Guys, guys. I wouldn't lie to ya ;)

Sneijder ain't typical trequartista, like Diego is, or Baggio was in his days, but he is "Jose's trequartista", a perfect guy for 4-4-2 rombo.

Diego would be better offensively, maybe VDV too(a little), but they would do jack shit in deffensive phase. Sneijder is great at this for a trequartista.

Like I've said, he is like a mix of Dejan and Diego, somewhere in the middle ;)

He will be great for us, we won't need VDV.

lonewolf19
30 Aug 09, 10:05
I cannot stop getting this out of my mind. Remember the sick pass from Sneijder when we go on counter attack in the second half? A ball all the way cross the field to find the foot of Eto'o. If you look closely Wesley first back tracked to help defence before obtaining the ball and pass it on quickly.

Seriously who else in our MF can pull this off? This guy did not even have training season with us yet....

Yes, it's totally different situation. Sneijder proved his worth in one of the biggest matches of the season. Plus his position is different, it's much more demanding position, where you really have to be a good player to succeed. This alone already tells me that Sneijder will definitely not be a flop.

Ah, forgot to praise his kicking technique really. He shots, his long passes. They are just fabulous. He doesn't need much steps to release a goddamn cannon shot, which he showed couple of times yesterday. And that pass which LW19 mentioned, he released it so quickly, it was hard and it was on target. Milito and Eto'o will benefit so much of Sneijder and his long passes. :star:

One of the greatest things he will do is open up space for others. Once he hit that belting shot which was saved Bilan were forced to close on him quicker which opens up space for Samu and Milito to move in to. It should also fee up the flanks for Maicon and whoever plays LB. When Cambiasso returns our ball retention should be outstanding but i thought Dejan did a nice job last night as well.

i hope it doesnt slow down when chuchu comes back..deki has way higher intensity then him...with chuchu we know were going to get that stand around and see what happens approach(or hit the long ball)..ball retention is one thing and i admit its important but whats more important is what u do with it..im sure chuchu has it in him though to push it up with more intesity..jose should figure it out pretty easily..

I think perhaps the most important point is the one others have made about space -- having a hole player who is a legit threat the moment he touches the ball will create space for everyone around him; that's going to be huge this season for Eto'o, Milito, and even Motta and Deki.

It wasnt a last minuted, appernatly Jose wanted him a long time ago, he was one of the options discuesse, also Melo is a pure Defensive / Central Midfielder, we already have people who are even better than him in that aspect.

Agree with this Khaled, i know Melo is great DCM but, we already Cambiasso in this position, and now we know Dejan can play in that role more better than Melo.

this is considering we missed out on lampard (last season), diego, deco and melo (this season)

- We never were really interested in Diego, because of Jose

- Melo is the type of player Motta is, and we chose the latter one

We didn't missed out on those two, because we didn't really went for them, or where very interested in.

After i saw Diego Milito's passing/assisting ability, shots by Sneijder and runs by Motta i don't really care about Diego or Melo.

This was just first match of Wesley Sneijder, we have what to watch from him, I belive in him and I think he'll became my favourite player after Ibra's leaving. Now I don't care very much about Ibra, he leaved but now we have great team.. definitivly Sneijder have completed our strong team, imagine if we get Pandev/Baptista.. really we will be strong attack..

His freekicks weren't great in the derby, but he can do it.

That last one thomas posted is absolutely the sickest.

I wish we could get a statistic on how many of his shots he actually scored.

I do not know why people are still doubting his FK. It was known world wide that he is one of the very best free kicker. I believe there was a vote on who is the best free kicker in the Dutch national team and Sneijder got 98% of the votes.

Well, I cannot wait till he score some screamer for us. It has been a while (since Mihajovic), that we have such a good FK.

Every body in here is looking for next game Wesley, we have big expectation to him. i hope he's doin great in game against Barca. Against Parma, we can use Wesley to adapt and learn how to work with Jose tactic. He's smart player.

Having VDV and RVP in the squad? Wow.

VDV?? i don't think so.. i know he's a great attacking midfielder. but, imo he's to average. RVP that was so great. i vote RVP, if Inter sign RVP, i think we doesn't need to get Pandev. He's really techinal, with greak FK.

I think you misunderstood Ilkinio's point. He was referring to how Sneijder beat VDV and RVP both to be the free kicker in the Dutch squad. He was not talking about Inter signing them both. =P

Either he is off or he did a terrible job setting up his wall, I agree but that shot curls 3 yards wide of the goal and then hooks back in...the view from Sneijder's back is incredible...

The major thing Sneijder has added (apart from his shooting from distance) that you could see from the derby is his movement. Not only him moving but his ability to keep the ball moving all the time. It will be very important against teams who will try and park the bus when playing us.

Michael

Did anyone know he kissed the badge before the derby?

Sneijder:

Before the derby, you kissed the badge.
Yes, it was a natural gesture for me. I didn't want to likeable to anyone. In fact, I did it in the tunnel, not in front of the stadium.

I'll post the entire interview in a little bit.

Michael
04 Sep 09, 03:45
Sneijder with Gazzetta:

"Perhaps my old team beats us individually but not as a team. Ibra? Eto'o and Milito?"

You had just arrived in Milan but you didn't seem like you were out of place. How?
"I felt very comfortable because I feel good in this system of play. I love playing as a number 10 and it is my natural position. Then, I have a coach that I really wanted and we are stronger than the team I've had. Real maybe beat us in terms of individual qualities but we are more of a team."

Before the derby, you kissed the badge.
"Yes, it was a natural gesture for me. I didn't want to likeable to anyone. In fact, I did it in the tunnel, not in front of the stadium."

The World Cup is near and the risking a spot in the National team has weighed heavily on your decision to accept Inter?
"I didn't make this decision because of the World Cup. I made my choice for the future. I chose Inter because I want to feel like a leader. In Madrid I was one of many. They treated my like a kid."

So why it took so long for you to decide?
"I spent so much time thinking about it and it all happened in two weeks. I wanted to be a hundred percent sure of what I did and two weeks didn't seem long enough for me to be certain."

So when did you know for sure? Because of Mourinho?
"Mourinho sent me many meaningful messages. He said that he wanted to build the team around me."

In Madrid it wasn't like this?
"I have the impression that the coach in Madrid has a big influence. The problem for Real is not money but they treated people without much respect. But I'm pround to be part of their history."

Now seeking revenge?
"No. I want to meet them in the Champions League and I'd beat them, but my spirit is positive. When I arrived in Milan I tried to turn my anger into energy for my new team and it went well."

Maybe revenge for the National team. In European Cup, a wasted opportunity.
"I always feel sorry for the lost against Russia. We had a great opportunity but we let it escaped. But that was the past, now we try to get better at the World Cup."

Since Milan in 1994, no one can win the Scudetto and the Champions League?
"I know it's difficult, but if we don't have too many injuries we can try."

Who is the strongest team in Europe?
"Barcelona are the strongest. But there is United. Arsenal always play well and there's Inter."

Without Ibrahimovic?
"Better than Eto'o and Milito?"

What problems do you expect to see in the upcoming months?
"None. I know that in Italy you work in a different way but each country is different, I will adapt."

Will the language be a problem?
"No I don't think. I speak Spanish and almost all my teammates speak it."

lonewolf19
04 Sep 09, 04:22
So another badge kissing debate? I am glad he did it in the tunnel not in front of the crowd.

Stefan
