From italian player debate to homegrown talents...

(REUTERS, London) - Europe’s top clubs are divided over UEFA’s decision that clubs playing in European competitions must have at least eight homegrown players in their 25-man squads from the start of the 2008-09 season.

UEFA announced that clubs taking part in their competitions, would, from the start of the 2006-07 season have to have four homegrown players in their squads, with the quota increasing to eight by 2008-09.

UEFA defines homegrown players as those who, aged between 15 and 21, were developed at the club or by other clubs from the same national association or by an academy in the national association for a minimum of three years.

The nationality of a homegrown player will be irrelevant in a bid to circumvent any opposition by the European Union on the grounds of freedom of trade.

Arsenal is currently the only club in the G14 who would not meet UEFA’s proposed standards. ‘For example, Real Madrid have 10 homegrown players in their current squad of 25, Bayern Munich have 18, PSV Eindhoven have 19. Arsenal have three.’

While the English Premier League is against the proposal, so is the Italian, although Franco Carraro, president of the Italian FA and a member of the UEFA executive committee, said: ‘It is a prudent and balanced step from UEFA’. A spokeswoman for the Italian football league said, ‘We haven’t taken a position on the issue yet but we will be discussing the matter on Monday.’

The proposals will be discussed at UEFA’S annual congress in Tallinn in April (2005) when it is expected to be adopted by a large majority of the European body’s 52 national associations.
So, we should have four homegrown talents in season 2006-07 and eight two seasons later.

That story said that currently Arsenal is the only club in the G14 who would not meet UEFA’s proposed standards. Still they have three according to that report.

What about Inter? I look at our squad and i hardly see a player who is our homegrown talent. Martins sure is one, but who are the others? So, if we now only have one homegrown que...talent (!), then aren´t we quite an hurry to do something. Is Potenza who went for Chievo listed as a homegrown talent anymore? Can we use him as a "one" if we take him back? Eliakwu should come back, Dino Marino should be used, Donazzan would be lovely etc.

    Good rule.

I actually do want a restiction on it. I think it should be a lot smaller though. Like 4.

8 is too much for my liking. 4 is the perfect balance. There are simply too many clubs who gives a Jack's ass about their youth sectors. I'm mainly talking about european clubs here. That's a shame and action should be taken. Just not to the extremes, if you know what I mean?

This rule will also benefit Inter a lot because our youth sector is probably the 3rd best in the world after Ajax (no.1) and Real Madrid (no.2).

That also gives us an edge over Bilan and Gobbi. Even though I'm not just proposing the restriction because of that. It is simply because it is the best for football.

8 local talents is waaaay too many. That's like, one-third of the a normal squad. 4 should be just nice.

Real Madrid's youth sector is the 2nd best in the world? What have you been smoking? Do I need to show you video tapes of Borja, Raul Bravo, Portillo, Minambres and Spanish's answer to Nesta, Pavon!?!?!?

I actually think that French clubs have good youth sector, so do Juventus and Roma.

Yes potenza would qulify as would pasquale, beati, biava, franchini, elakwu, ect.

We are covered in this department. I like this idea. It's a good idea to force clubs to produce their own players. I liek it a lot.

Welldone uefa. And its not against eu law and immoral like the 3 italian per team idea.

So let me get this straight, you need to have a set number of home-grown players (home-grown, what are they, man or potatoes??) in your SQUAD?

Does that mean that you can bench them, and send them on the stands? Who cares then? What's this going to achieve?

If I'm missing something here please tell me...

Pavon and Pravo The extra attackers every team facing real has.

As long as it has nothing to do with nationality, I think it's fair. What the point is from this, I think, is some kind of financial responsibilities. Teams will focus more on cultivating great young players instead of going out and dashing out some money. Makes sense, but I doubt it will work.

It has nothing to do with nationality's since uefa lawyers found that if they include any such thing in it would be against the law.

    Lack of cognac today, perhaps?

It is very debatable to crown the team that has the BEST youth sector out of Real, Ajax and Inter. But you can't deny that there is a clear jump from these 3 team's youth sector to Roma and Nantes. Those two teams are in a middle level because they're pretty good too. The rest is not even worth mentioning. Worthy might be a hard describtion but I'm pissed at them for not even making an effort.

I don't consider Juventus even worthy of being taken into the picture in this 'coronation' because they might give the kids ecstacy.

Well. I feel as an Inter fan I'm being gracious towards the other clubs who are so inferior to our youth sector. Kinda like giving the other teams a chance with that 4 player rule. I'm sure everyone is up to it!

    They're just being lazy...

Fabio, Fabio, Fabio! When will you learn that you should never agree what Frisk "The Italian hater" says.

If it will be eight homegrown players in 25-man squads (2008-09 season), then leaving eight players in the bench/stands for the whole season isn´t going to work. There´s no way we can cope with 17 players for the whole season (Serie A, CL and Coppa). Those eight player will and should be someone´s we can and will use. Use homegrown players and we can finally have some kind of identity, in all leagues all over the world.

Actually tommi its 4 home grown players and 4 association players. Association players are players who came throught the uefa system of another club who is in the same association as you.

Thats why I wanna know how old stankovic was when when he joined lazio. I quess we will have the 2 home grown players and 2 association players we need for 2006/2007 already.

    Lets see :

    Home grown: Potenza and martins
    Association:Told?,Matrix?,Cristiano,Vieri?? and Stankovic???

    Yeah we are covered.

As long as he was between 15 and 21 and spend 3 seasons between those ages at lazio. He qualifies as an association players.

Oh I see where this is going. Coppa Italia, already a disgrace of a competition where all teams use their B-squads, is going to become the "Primavera Cup"!
