    Retrogaming

anyone in retrogaming, here? for those who don't know, retrogaming means to play older videogames. how old, it depends on personal preferences: to me, from the origins to playstation 2.

you can do retrogaming in two ways: the first, very cheap and often completely free, just by playing roms on an emulator on pc. or you can play old videogames on their original consoles.

while i have played almost all old consoles, i am a sucker for nintendo NES, the first and unimitable. my heart beats in 8 bits.

why play older stuff with so much amazing, new stuff available? well, nostalgia factor plays a role. also, inferior graphics, which would be usually considered a drawback, are considered a plus by retrogamers, because when you can't offer a flashy graphic like modern videogames do, you have to offer a more enjoyable game. also, i think history in itself is very fascinating and whatever comes from the past looks precious. finally, a form of admiratio for the programmers: it's hard to create a good and lasting game with the very limited techinical possibilities offered in those years.

it's not like i spend much times on videogames, but when i do, it is usually NES games. recently, my nintendo nes broke, i brought it to a friend of mine who repairs computer and videogames and he told me a piece of it burnt, but he cannot repair it because he just wouldn't know where to find that single piece. so i'm buying a new console.

i am going to write a post a week here, every time dedicated to something different but related to retrogaming. this time, it will be a videogame, batman for nintendo NES, which arrived in europe anno domini 1990.

back then, it was considered an extremely good game. first of all, it offered an amazing soundtrack. well, "amazing" for the criteria of those years, of course. second, it's Batman, and Batman is cool by definition. but more than anything else, it was relatively simple at the beginning, but increasingly harder. by the time you got to the more challenging parts you were already totally caught up in the game, so it was almost addicting. the last challenge, against Joker, was exceptionally difficult and it took me months just to defeat him (well, i was 8, so give me a break in recent times it took me a lot less ).

a guy posted a video about this:

i don't understand why this video got so many downvotes. however, it may look simple because this guy is very good, but: 1. poker had an advantage, because he had full energy, while you usually arrived there with, like, half energy; 2. it was a hell of a problem to avoid the lightnings, because the only way (and it didn't always work) was to stay very close to the Joker, at the same time avoiding being shot by him. all of this required a very good timing.

to me, this game is a 9/10. they could only have done better, if it had been a bit longer, like teenage turtle mutant ninjas 2 or super mario 3. overall a classic and still a very enjoyable game experience.

emulators are simply programs for pc which emulate something (in this case a console). and by the way console emulators are usually free.

Your dad's old ps2? how fucking young are you?

My first ever game consoles were the handheld Robocop game and after that the Batman one:

Well, I didn't actually play them much because they belonged to my elder brother. But I was allowed to watch while he played

Then we had the first multiplayer console which we bought from a second hand shop. It was a pong console, somewhat looked like this:

So we actually went backward a decade or so

Then we made a massive jump forward and bought the nintendo 64 (we play it even today from time to time).

Then we bought the ps2, 3 and 4.
It will be called Internazionale, because we are brothers of the world.

Great thread! I love retro-gaming, in fact I play a lot more retro games than new ones. Just last year I got back my Nes, Snes and N64 from my parents house and started buying some old games. I don't like PC emulators at all, nothing like playing in your old consoles with original controllers.

Last year little by little I bought some games here and there but starting this year I got crazy and spent a looooot of money. Just in February I spent like $1,000 only on Nes and Snes games! Most of them on Amazon, eBay and a local store here in Mexico. The most expensive Nes game I think it was Zen: Intergalactic Ninja, a Konami game I've heard but never played before. It cost me like $70 and for Snes Sunset Riders, Sparkster and Ninja Warriors, each one like $80.

Precisely just 5 minutes ago I was playing Chrono Trigger on Wii VC, fantastic game. The last couple of days I was playing all the Nes Mega Man games including Mega Man 9 and 10 on WiiWare. If you like Mega Man games check this ones, they're really good.

Glad to see someone else appreciating old games like I do. We old gamers know graphics aren't everything.

I like old games because the new one are to much focused on the Graphic. Its only interesting for Online playing but the stories from old games like Crash bandicoot or Medel of Honor are much more interesting then this Next-Gen shit. I only like the storie of first games from Ps3 like MW2 or Bad Company. From PS4 only games like Just Cause. Big games got really annoying..

Try Dark Souls/Bloodborne, very old school : Only gameplay, hard.

On topic, I didn't manage to keep my oldies but I have every damn emulator installed on my PC so yeah, from time to time I boot a very old game.

Recently I was trying to config a PC Engine 98 emulator but I have some troubles.

I bought the same Game Boy Colour last month that I had as a kid off some guy. Got the GB, Pokemon Gold, Super Mario Land 2, Mario Tennis, Super Mario Deluxe, and something else I can't remember for $70. Perfect condition and games had new batteries. I've been wanting to get this thing back forever and I'm just so relieved I got it and for a good price I almost paid a lot more for one on line.

I also bought a N64 a few years ago despite never having one when I was younger. I so far only have WWF No Mercy, WCW/nWo Revenge, and Pokemon Stadium. I want to buy more games for it but can't find the ones I want. Specifically want the South Park games.

I play super mario world all the time on a cheap ass retro bit shit I found. Thinking about getting a Nintendo 64 to play Mario Kark which was the game I had. Still play Fifa 09 on a computer I have with windows XP.

I'm not really into new gaming. The last system I had was a GameCube with NBA Live 06.

My first "console" was the Atari 2600 clone (Rambo)

Grew up with the Game Boy, then N64, PS1 then kinda stopped completely. I have OpenEmu with a bunch of ROMs but never really play. Maybe once in a blue moon for a couple of hrs purely for nostalgia, but I get bored quickly.

Buy a Nintendo Wii for $30. Mod it and with either a external HD,USB or Sd card you can play any game from Atari to PS1. I think you can play PS2 games just never got it to work. You can also down load any Wii game pretty easy too

I have seen the PS1 mini priced 50 euros, including shipping costs. Imho still not worth buying it for those who have a PC or laptop (so, almost everyone), as it's basically an emulator with a handful of games and you can have the same stuff for free downloading them off the internet.

Same for Nintendo mini and SNES mini.

The good thing though is that these mini-consoles can be modded via software (no need to solder a new chip) and at that point you can use as many roms as you want.

So yeah, in that case, it can make sense to buy a PS1 mini. It would still offer the very same experience as an emulator, but in a good looking package.

I have a Nintendo WII U that I use as a game boy. The screen is small so gave it to my nieces who are pretty young.

I have a Nintendo DS that I use to play Super Metroid

I haven’t hacked my wife’s Switch as if I break it I don’t want her to flip out.

But yea hacking systems and getting Roms is super easy. Tho playing it on my lab top or handheld it’s fine.

People who kept their systems are they rich? At least in the US they gave you really good deal for trading your old system and games for the new systems.
