    Thanks!

    For those who care

    Short summary

KAA Gent, is a football team from Ghent ( ) my hometown, has just became champions of Belgium after defeating Standard with 2-0 (Kums, Neto). It's the first time in 115 year history we managed that. Also next year we're guaranteed spot in CL (pot 4 ) Remarkable is that 15 years ago, Gent was struggling with major debts and on urge of financial breakdown. But current president Ivan De Witte & Manager Michel Louwagie (bit Ausilio & Fassone & Bolingbroke' jobs in 1 person) saved KAA Gent from death and slowly but steady revived it to a healthy team (budget 44m+) with their own stadium : Ghelamco Arena (20.000 people)

It was finalized last year, but sadly that year we really sucked and played Play-Off II. Shame, the team had potential but too many rotten apples in core. Fans were very disappointed.
This year we appointed a new coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck. He sold the rotten apples and got 'good' boys instead, with Championship as result

    The Stars

    - Coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck : He doesn't admit it, but he is solely the guy who made Gent champions. His harsh training regime, cleaning out the rotten apples, intense motivations, tactical superiority and the ability of making mediocre players perform over their potential. He stresses out the importance of Physic and stamina. Also an excellent people-manager. Thanks Hein! He often started a 3-5-2 ( you can imagine the grudge I had against that ) but played very fresh and entertaining football with rarely crosses, mostly passing through center. Later he adapted to 3-4-3, 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. Which worked out greatly.

    - Striker Laurent Depoitre (26, Belgian) : A technical, assisting, scoring target man. A tank striker with amazing stamina, power and speed. We got him from a low team for free, expecting him to be a sub, but he exploded at Gent, scoring 14 goals and assisting 10 goals himself. Player to watch in CL (at least I hope so). Disadvantage is that he works too much for the team and should be more selfish and score more.

    - Captain and regista Sven Kums (yes pronounced Cums) (26, Belgian) : a modern regista with excellent passing abilities and controls the midfield. Extremely important for Gent. However he is very injury prone and doesn't assist/score much. Scoring his first goal in champions game vs Standard. However he constantly had a 95% passing in most games. Smart player but needs to get his statistics up. Shame he isn't called up as international.

    - CM/LM/AM Brecht Dejaeghere (23, Belgian) : Wasn't impressive last season, but this season he ripped defenses apart, assisting, actions, dribbles, .. amazing player, with a big stamina as well. One of the best in Gent, also shame he isn't international, but on his position it'd been hopeless anyway (Hazard, Mertens, De Bruyne, Witsel, Fellaini,..)

    - Trequartista/AM Daniel Milicevic (29, Suisse/Serbian) : Free kick specialist, amazing ball technique and insane shooting control. Scored massive and assisted a lot, not my favorite because he's not consistent, but regardless great player for Gent. Palermo wanted him as replacement for Dybala/Vazquez.

    - Keeper Matz Sels (22, Belgian) : Amazing keeper, saved Gent many times, chosen as second best keeper (After Ryan from Club Brugge ; Aussie), great reflexes and line keeper. Weak on corners and long balls tho. Regardless still time to learn. Had over 15+ clean sheets.

    - CB Rami Gershon (26, Israeli) : One of biggest revelations this season. Harsh but fair defender. Only missed 1 game this season, leader in defense but sometimes gets caught by position unawareness. Regardless one of big heroes this season.

    - LAM/RAM Moses 'Daddy' Simon (19, Nigerian) : Came in wintermercato, and changed the team's mentality for good. Gent was struggling with scoring. He came and scored 7 goals in 10 games. Surprise of season, shocked, dribbled, scored,.. Biggest talent. Last games he was awful, but regardless he is young and already shown much class. Teams have offered 10-15m for him (probably Turkish teams), now on U-20 WC.

    Other stars who were important

    - CM/DM Renato Neto (23, Brazilian) : Educated at Sporting Clube de Portugal, CM/DM, with immense stamina and power, fabulous pass and great header. Great motivator in squad.
    - Striker Nicklas Pedersen (29, Danish) : Stylish footballer but very injury prone, has amazing class and scores fabulous goals
    - Striker/LAM/RAM Benito Raman (20, Belgian) : youth product, fast dribbler, great stamina but he misses a lot of chances. Regardless had a big part in Championship
    - Regista/AM Hannes Van der Bruggen (22, Belgian) : Also a youth product with a great pass but doesn't have much stamina. Bit inconsistent as well.

Last sunday there was a celebration in city of Ghent ; There were 125.000 people present. Massive for a team who has a stadium of 20.000 people. Papers call it a sleeping Giant awaking. I was there as well

The nickname of AA Gent is The Buffalos; it comes from around 1910, the famous/infamous 'Buffalo' Bill did many shows in Europe showing his shooting skills, hunting indians,... And the crowd cheered 'Buffalo! Buffalo! Buffalo!' it got picked up by Students whom chanted in stadium back in 1910. Ever since Gent are the Buffalos.

Anyway thanks for reading this. Hopefully next year some of you support this team in CL, it'd be awesome!

I thought football in Italy had changed, but it seems that a zebra never changes its stripes.
