toughie isnt it. he has one of the best ever teams, but he's helped a lot in crafting it.

2 cls back to back for the first time since the 90s is crazy impressive of course...

but part of me does wonder if he'd just guardiola it elsewhere or if he can actually really deliver consistently

You can still fail, even at one of the best teams ever though. Look at Benitez.

He went to Madrid and made it its own. I didn't think he'd do this good. Though I guess if he manages to replicate the same in a different squad, we'll know for sure.
We are not now that strength which in old days
    Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Sandro Mazzola throwing more salt on Rube...

I celebrated all night, but now the party is over. We prepare for the next ... Why against Juve? I looked at the game and saw a team there and the other one that was not there. And you know how it was, I was thinking about the team that was winning. Here, in the province of Milan, there was everything, playing machines, horns, singing people. I too enjoyed playing the horn, indeed, I had put a duplicator so that the horn sounded much stronger than usual. "

The amount of people I've seen claiming it was the first time anyone has ever won back-2-back CL's is disturbing.

it's the first time since it went to the newer format, I believe.

Wasnt it the 90s where they made it so it wasnt just a 'champions' cup? And around then added group stages too?

There's a huge difference.... Kinda like the Premiership.

1955–1991: Knockout format, one club per country (the league champion) plus the defending champion.
1955: Some countries were represented by a team not the domestic champion.
1956–59: The domestic runner-up was allowed to compete in cases when the domestic champion was also European champion.[12]

1991–1993: Three knockout qualifying rounds, group phase with two groups, two group winners meet in final, one club per country (the league champion) plus the defending champion.

1993–1994: Knockout semi-finals added following group phase.

1994–1997: One knockout qualifying round, group phase with four groups, group winners and all runners-up to eight-team knockout phase, one club per country (the league champion) plus the defending champion.

1997–1999: Two knockout qualifying rounds, group phase with six groups, group winners and two runners-up to eight-team knockout phase, up to two clubs per country.

1999–2003: Three knockout qualifying rounds, two group phases with eight first-phase group winners and all runners-up moving to four second-phase groups, second-phase group winners and all runners-up to eight-team knockout phase, up to four clubs per country.

Since 2003: Three knockout qualifying rounds, one group phase with 8 groups, group winners and all runners-up to 16 club knockout phase, still up to four clubs per country.

Since 2009: UEFA introduced a play-off round in qualifying round of the Europa League and Champions League.

So yes there were no group stages before. Repeating has become so much harder.

Not that it will matter much, 2 CLs is more than enough to make him a legend, more than he already was.

for many years, from inception to like the 90s, I BELIEVE it was only the winners of every league who featured, and then it was ties only (head to head, no group stage)

I think it was around the early 90s where it changed into the more familiar format we recognise today... It had 2 group stages for a while,, think it was as late as the early 2000s we still had 2 group stages? And then it went to what we now see

thats why people often say its never been retained before, until now obviously. Because its a wholly different format. And much much harder now with many more games

edit: actually looking in history a bit more it looqks like its not as simple as that.

There's definitely a bit rebranding around 92, though, but the differences might have been a bit smoother transition
