As expected, the back of the shirt looks really messy with a player name & number.

It might sound dumb, but in this regard, it's important to view text, letters and numbers as merely shapes rather than a meaningful symbol. For example, "1" isn't a one, it's just a straight line. A "0" isn't a zero, it's a circle/oval.

Creating "shapes" that look nice, and paying close attention to the angles and the ratios that these shapes create, is the base fundamental of creating a functional and visually appealing font. Now look at our shirt.. The shapes created by the letters, numbers, and the spaces between them, is completely chaotic. Why? Because they're laid over a zig-zag background. I suspect the choice of font for the numbers is designed to try offset this, but I'd argue they've failed in that regard. See here:

Examine the areas I've circled in red. See all these awkward little bits of blue and black that stick out due to the player names and numbers in white? They contribute to an untidy feel.

Look at the lines I've marked in green. See how the angles created are completely different to, and work against, those of the diagonal zig-zag lines? These things also contribute to that untidiness.

These things matter. And you don't encounter these problems anywhere near as badly with plain vertical (or horizontal) stripes (for obvious reasons.) With the vertical stripes, you only have ONE angle (a 180 angle i.e. a straight line) which "goes against" the angles and curves of the lettering. In this shirt, on the other hand, we have chaotic and distracting angles being created everywhere and I think it's very unappealing.

IMO, the solutions to this are:

    1) a very square-ish font. That way you only have 90 angles created by the font, and you can minimize some of the weird shapes being created by the clash of font vs background

    2) use a full black area on the back of the shirt. I've personally wanted this for a long time. See here:

    3) or the best option yet.. don't use fucking zig-zags on the shirt
Dammit Uni. Send Inter a strongly worded email. This outrage is unacceptable.

My problem with fonts is that they are neither stylistically fitting nor original.
I hate the current third kit font that looks like it's ripped off a generic western movie poster.
This new font looks like generic stretched Century Gothic (the Bioshock font), aka as if its stolen off a 1920s movie poster. That narrow, tall style of lettering. It's awful. With a hint of MS Comic Sans cheesy roundness to the curves.

Fonts are a very understated problem in these past 3 years. The only one I really liked was the one from the marble third kit. It was simple and elegant.

More or less agreed on all points. You're correct in saying our new font is very Art Deco. All the more reason it is stylistically incompatible with a zig zag theme.

I also really liked the marble kit font. I remember complaining in this thread that it should've been used on our home and away jerseys too.

As for this seasons 3rd kit, I know what you mean with the "western" feel. I really like the shirt numbers and I would've liked the players names to be in a similar font, but I don't mind it too much.

The Driver logo is itself not great, but I'm not against having a secondary sponsor occupy the space where the Driver logo sits. Visually, it's not unbalanced. The problem is Pirelli don't pay us enough to be our main shirt sponsor, let alone have two logos on our shirt.
