Not saying we deserved to go through, but we deserved a fair chance. That was rare back then and it still is against Liverpool in recent times.
Even Chelsea, Arsenal (back then) and Man City (recently) got a taste of that poison. It's not as if it was a PL fetish UEFA had, though it sort of did. It was a push of Liverpool and Man Utd. Even against Juventus who had great connections in Europe back then with Pairetto, Liverpool got the calls

Milan also got many benefits, which ended in that infamous game vs Barcelona. The last European games between us and Milan in particular come to mind, I'll never forget how Merk fucked us over.

I have no idea how people remember details about matches from last week never mind last decade. Kudos though

2nd minute of the return leg. Instead of a red card, nothing was given when the incident was in front of the assistant's eyes, then Shevchenko scored so we needed 4 goals. Merk decided that the only potential foul against Adriano was to murder him, so he ended up collapsing after 60something minutes as he already was fatigued. Then we managed to score after all this time of pressing with Cambiasso and Merk decides to put the icing on the cake by disallowing it. Think we had 2 or 3 legit penalty calls that game. And to top it all of, Dida had the game of his lifetime.

    Some highlights from that night:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3hqo36 (not sure how to embed this one, should have worked this way)

And this game is why you either have to completely not act at all, or act with completion. The fans should have entered the pitch, not just throw flares as the next weeks that followed the Italian (and European) propaganda machine took over and said that the Inter fans were "fed up of losing" and "reacted against their team". Which was nonsense. The fans reacted against the fucking ref and Dida got hit in the process because he was standing around thinking it was drizzling fire.

One of the few classy things Mancini did at Inter was yelling at Merk telling him that this was all his doing.

It’s almost the opposite for me - I started watching and going to football (Irish League and Northern Ireland international matches) in the early 1980s and I’ve got a razor sharp memory for many of the games in the 1980s through to the mid 1990s and can also rhyme off, without thinking, the teams that won each trophy each year ........ it then starts getting hazy from the late 1990s and especially through to the present day. For example, I could look at a well known squad from the late 1980s and name almost every player but would probably struggle to even name 2 or 3 these days.

I remember more games from the 2006/07 season than I do from the past 9 years and I remember the 1998 World Cup more than any other World Cup.

Such a sublime team. Too bad everyone will commemorate the recent team much more just because of a few fluke CLs.

This is actually one of the most depressing videos, despite the result. And one can draw parallelisms with the current affairs now.

We had a great group of individuals that weren't performing as great as they should have as a team.

Granted we lost Ronaldo for half the season, but looking at that team, we could have built around it and create a force. Instead, we opted to go for a "great manager" in the Juventino called Marcello Lippi.

As a result, Andrea Pirlo was sent on loan away to Reggina instead of increasing his first team exposure.

Roberto Baggio was relegated to a training cone.

We sent the best Italian GK in Pagliuca away because the coach felt that Peruzzi was better.

We got a Milanista locker room mole in Panucci because the coach 'trusted him'.

We let Diego Simeone go just because of some wild rumours that he wasn't on good terms with Ronaldo (which was a BS excuse that any proper coach at the time would have handled. It probably was deemed that Simeone's influence on the locker room would cause problems to a new coach, a common tactic of a newcomer to show he means business to the rest).

We let Djorkaeff go because the coach felt he was done [he went on to play for 5 more seasons, granted not at this level, but he could have been an influential rotation player for several more years and instead we wasted money on guys like Hakan Sukur, Robbie Keane, Antonio Pacheco and Adrian Mutu for a role that was suited for a club veteran]

Add Seedorf, Vieri and a top center back to form a new duet with the coming of Laurent Blanc (maybe Fabio Cannavaro at that time) along with Gigi Simoni or some other manager that wasn't tainted with Gobbism and Inter would have been a force. We were robbed in the 99 Champions League vs Man Utd and robbed of a potential CL semi final vs Juventus with proper referees, only to be subjected to a Marcello Lippi era of mediocrity and underperformance that led to a 6-0 thrashing by fucking Milan of all teams.

I still can't get over how we destroyed that team. Just like back then we needed some upgrade in defence to become an elite team, now we just need an overhaul in midfield to claim that. And we're not far off having a distastrous second half of the season and simply throw everything apart by making some terrible short sighted decisions.

    Rant over.

For the tl;dr guys: FUCK CONTE.

I remember that game against Man United very well.... 2 situations: goal disallowed by Simeone (in Old Trafford) and the penalty call on Zamorano (G. Meazza).

You Always need a little luck in winning titles, but Man United had ALOT of luck in winning that treble.

I fully agree with you about that team. Lippi did more harm then good... The way he treated Baggio was just..... I read he still had problems with Baggio, because Baggio did not want to snitch to Lippi during their time together in JuBe.

During the season 98-99 I remember Moratti's words about the the 97-98 season. Moratti said Figc needed to investigate that season. If Figc doesn't, then he will do it himself. (This is why I'm convinced Calciopoli are the doings of Moratti) Probably one of the greatest things he has done as an Inter president.
