    Diego Godin

Inter are very close to agreeing a deal with Atletico Madrid's defender*Diego Godin. The Uruguayan defender, who will be out of his contract in June, will leave the Colchoneros next summer and a deal between all parties seems imminent.

Godin and Inter have reached an agreement in priciple on the basis of a 2 year deal, plus an option to extend the contract for an additional year. Talks between parties are ongoing to discuss the final details but the deal is very close to a positive conclusion, with medicals set to be planned in the next few weeks after which he will pen his new contract with the Nerazzurri.

I'm assuming that this Miranda's replacement and not Skriniar's.

    Fabrizio Romano:

Exclusive: Godin to Inter, the background of Juventus' and Man United interests

Diego Godin to Inter is close to realization. Piero Ausilio has been carrying out negotiations in great secrecy for time and is set to bring the Atletico Madrid to Milano next summer. A symbol of Simeone's Atletico as well as the Uruguayan national team and one of the best defenders in the world. All done at no cost because Godin will not renew his contract with Atletico and will start a new adventure in Italy.

The club is already planning medical visits for the player. The medical tests will be done first between January and February, then again in the summer at the time of the signature, just a formality. Godin will sign with Inter until June 2021, a two-year contract plus an option for a third season depending on the physical condition of the player. The other club interested was Manchester United but the operation was blocked by the departure of Mourinho that paved the way for the Nerazzurri.

The arrival of Godin in June will result in a sale in the defensive department. Miranda is already sure to leave Inter. The former teammate of Godin asked the management to leave and will be satisfied. It remains to be understood if already in January or in the summer, depending on the offers.

Godin will take his place in the team. At the moment, Inter does not foresee a departure of Milan Skriniar and has no intention of accepting any offer. Thus, Godin was not taken to replace Skriniar. In the summer everything will be evaluated also based on the offers.

Meanwhile, besides Luciano Spalletti, Giuseppe Marotta was also a great protagonist of the deal. The former Juventus director was notified of the negotiations between the parties and continued with it more than willingly, having insisted in first person to bring him to Juventus last summer. But at that time, nothing happened and Godin stayed in Madrid but will now arrive in Milano. The farewell of Marotta from Juventus has indirectly helped Inter to sign the player, a sweet taste for the new Inter CEO.

There's still nothing regarding his salary in the rumors. Very curious to see what it will be eventually.

Probably something similar to de Vrij and Asamoah.

Let's see if it's gonna be concluded first.

    So this rules Conte out.

Question is: will it be Mourinho or Simeone?

Most probably Spalletti but this shouldn't be discussed in this thread.

First prediction for the salary, 5m€ annually:

It's not a disaster but gotta say it's pretty big for 3rd CB.

Probably that will have some influence in negotations with Skriniar. With current proposal he would have 3rd salary from the choice of 3CBs despite being the 1st choice, which looks a bit absurd. I guess if we want to keep him we would just have to offer something at least on the level of De Vrij, if not more.

Not sure I see the point in this transfer. His arrival pretty much paints the picture Miranda is leaving in the summer, but why replace him with another aging centre half on big wages who isn't going to start for us? It's as good a time as any to put that salary money towards signing a young player with potential who can develop and press our starters for game time in the coming seasons. It's really worrying how we're being linked constantly to players 32 or over in recent months.

A young CB can't compete for starters if they come as 3rd CB.

Well yes they can, a CB pairing can't play every game of a 50+ game season. Your third choice CB has to play his share of games, hence Miranda having 10 games under his belt at the halfway point of the season. So on that average if a young player can manage 20+ games a season at this level for two, three, four years and push the current starters out from there, then it would be better than signing a player and paying him more money than the guy he's replacing to do the same thing. It's better to have a long term plan than to just sign old players who we have to move on again in a couple of seasons time.

Or maybe I'm wrong and we should just be the last port of call for aging stars to get a big pay day in Europe before they jet off to China for their retirement nest egg.

We are at a slight loss at this transfer move actually.

I rate Miranda slightly higher than Godin, but we end up paying more for senior backup CB and at the risk of destorying the wage structure. I don't totally understand why Miranda, at the dawn of his career, still intends to find regular playing time. Usually players at his age contend to spend out his career being a backup player with decent paycheck. Well, if Miranda still has a strong spirit to keep playing the game, we can't stop him. Good luck and thank you are all I can say.

As for Godin, I don't really mind with him as he should be the still decent backup CB. The wage of 5 miilion/year is correct figure for someone of his calibre to come free, but I worry this might upset De Vrij and Skriniar.

Even if this were to be true, I refuse to think of it as being true. Replacing your 24-year-old world class CB with a 33-year-old isn't something smart, ambitious teams do. If you want Skriniar, you better be shattering transfer records for center backs before I even start thinking because, odds are, any other prices aren't worth what Skriniar is worth being on our team.

Let's not pretend that this is a done deal before it is official. Atletico will try to keep him and his priority would be to stay, but he wants his salary to say that he's valued there.

Players have different motives for doing things. Miranda wanting to play more is completely normal actually. So he wants to leave and we need to replace him. Of course the experienced CB is the first choice since Miranda is one also. No doubt Miranda has taught a thing and two to Skriniar during last season. Exp players bring things to the training field too so it's not like they are totally useless if they don't play much. We need reliable bunch of CBs for next season too so I understand Marotta and Spalletti playing it safe.

Conte is the only one who prefer to play with 3 CB's. And I don't think Godin will come with the mindset he will be from the beginning a bench player, even if he will earn over 5m per season.
