I'm just trying to understand wtf you're saying, to be honest.

So you're saying we DONT set targets at the start of the season, but based on on-going context of performance and our rivals then?

You are not trying to understand.

This is a very simple matter. Teams set minimum and maximum targets at the beginning of the season, which may change during the season.

The winter Mercato was a testament that Inter wanted to push all the way. This is after finding themselves to be competing with Juve for the title who obviously were faltering.

The goal post shifted. This is normal

we have stepped up from last year, substantially. You cant expect someone to close a 21 point gap in one season realistically. It's bitter-sweet that we didnt manage to mount a proper title challenge, and yeah, we could have won it this year, but that was never our target.

Retrospectively changing targets have been the bane of this fucking club for the last 5 years. Every good run we suddenly target the scudetto. We had a target, and in my mind, we've exceeded it.

Juve finished 24 points behind Milan in 2011. Chelsea finished 31 points behind Leicester in 2016. I know every year is different and you cannot compare the situations exactly, but numbers-wise, it was a bigger gap in both scenarios.

So I think it is entirely realistic to expect a man to close a 21 point gap...especially when the same man has already done it TWICE in two different leagues. Not to mention, he had to achieve more than 86 points to win it in England and more than 80 to do it in Italy. Not like he won it with 75 points because the rest of the league was awful. So, the fact that we needed a max of 87 points to do it this year makes it even more annoying. It is not like the majority of this 9-title run where they reached 90+ points and thus needed like 92-95 points to win it.

I am probably one of the biggest fans of Conte and think he did an admirable job in his first season, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't expect more from him. Now, if we somehow finish second AND win the EL, I think I will be a little less disappointed.

And that's my point, goal posts shifting have been the frigging bane of this team in the last decade. I believe in setting a target at the start of the season and sticking to it - the rest of it is emotions and optimism.

We're all entitled to have different opinions on how our targets are set, but I'm sticking to the goal I hoped for at the start of the season.

true, but in the Milan case, they got rid of their porbably most important, if not top 3, player (Pirlo), who joined the competition. It's also the season Conte took over for Juve. Chelsea also took over one of the most important Leicester players in Kante, and of course, it was ALSO Conte's first season.

Maybe the lesson here is that we should have swapped Icardi for Dybala, eh? Because it looks like, in his first season, Conte wins the league if he gets a top player from the previous team ;-)

Dont get me wrong, contextually I'm gutted we didnt at least put in a really good competition for the league. But I'm pretty satisfied with the season - esp if we end up 2nd. I honestly think shifting goals have been a fucking disaster for this club in the last decade. As soon as we win like 5 games in a row, we're scudetto contenders, even if our target was to finish in the CL spots and actually end up in the Europa League spots

That was my point. This is Conte's first season at Inter haha.

Linear thoughts brings linear (aka) bad conclusions.

Conte's Juventus was destined to challenge. It wasn't a crap team that was 30 points far. Also, this was a moment of decline for both Milan and Inter while Napoli was not mature yet and Roma with Lazio were shit. And they still needed to steal the Scudetto that season.

They were planning on spending big in their stadium's inaugural nseason. They got Pirlo, they got Vidal who was highly rated and wanted by several great clubs at the time, while he had also had an agreement with Bayern. He fucked them over and joined Juventus that didn't even play in Europe. I think also Man Utd and Chelsea were interested in him, while Milan had a bid rejected iirc.

Chelsea was a team of champions that fucked their season up so that their coach would get sacked. Conte inherited a roster that won the league not 12 months prior.

Stop coloring everything and just see them as they are.

agreed, so those are nice exceptions as to whjy climbing 20+ points in a season is quite rare

It's not a matter of rarity. It's a matter of circumstances and overall situation.

It is extremely common in circumstances similar to how Conte has reached this level.

It is extremely rare in situations that do not involve a former championship winning team that just didn't like its coach. It is very common for a team that builds a new stadium to gain momentum. It is very common for a team that spends x2 or more than the previous years, especially reaching 9 digits, to see this effect.

Because I have been accused of "coloring" the situation by simply stating facts about what teams did the year before Conte joined and what they did in his first year.

The assumptions you make about every scenario that has ever happened and the talk about how they were "destined" to do this or "destined" to do that is seeing the situations as they are/were? In my opinion it is just an old man trying to create reasons in his head to help understand why someone he dislikes was successful TWICE in similar situations.

So let me "color" my situations with fake positive ideas and you can continue with your fake negative ideas.
