Milan sign Stam on two-year deal
    Posted on 17 May 2004 - 13:59

Italian champions AC Milan have signed Dutch international defender Jaap Stam from Lazio on a two-year deal, Milan said on Monday.

The former Manchester United player had been linked with a move to Milan for several months since Lazio said they would be forced to sell him before the final year of his contract.

Stam will be re-united with his former Lazio team mate Alessandro Nesta in the centre of defence.

The shaven-headed player made his name in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven before moving to Manchester United in 1998 where he helped the club win the European Cup a year later.

A strong central defender, who has also operated at right-back for Lazio, Stam moved to the Rome club in August 2001 following a reported dispute with United manager Alex Ferguson.

The 31-year-old will now make up what looks a formidable back-line with captain Paolo Maldini and Brazil captain Cafu at full-back.

Milan signed French midfielder Vikash Dhorasoo from Olympique Lyon earlier this month and on Sunday club vice-president Adriano Galliani said no other deals were planned.

"We have a squad that won the Champions League last season and has just won the 'scudetto' and I think we are fine as we are," said Galliani, who effectively runs the club on behalf of owner, Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

As expected redondo has left milan. Quess milan are being smart while juve are being dumb for once moggi being dumb at transfers?

    Samuel sold to Real
    Thursday 20 May, 2004

Walter Samuel is no longer a Roma player after he was sold to Real Madrid for £17.8m.

Reports this morning suggested that a deal was close and negotiations were concluded this evening.

Real beat Premiership giants Chelsea to Samuel’s signature after the stopper was made available for transfer.

It is believed that the former Boca Juniors ace will net around £2.8m a season for the next five years.

Samuel is set to fly out to Spain on Saturday before being presented to the media as a Real Madrid player on Monday.

The defender becomes the second man to leave the Giallorossi in the space of 24 hours after Jonathan Zebina signed for Juventus.

Brazilian midfielder Emerson could soon follow as reports suggest that he has already agreed to join Juve too. However, the two clubs haven’t agreed a fee.

Quess roma won't be a force next season.

Roma may get Matteo Ferarri (Parma) to replace Samuel. He's nowhere near Samuel's class but can still develop. I wish Samuel...bad luck in Spain. IMO, Real's defensive issue is far from over. One Samuel and a rubbish defender is not enough to win you the CL. And besides, what if Samuel gets injured??? Another issue is, Samuel hasn't passed the medica test yet. :p Remember Milito???

And Stefan...Quess??? I think you meant to say 'Guess???'.

I actually think that Real Madrid has finally made a brilliant signing. Samuel will immidately be their MVP, and I fear that Real Madrid will now really become 'unbeatable' in the long run.

Helguera and Samuel in central defence isn´t bad at all. Lacks pace, which might be a small problem when it comes to counter-attacks.

Thus far, I´d say that Milan is in the lead when it comes to the transfer market, while Roma are the worst team.

What I meant was, Samuel is not enough for Real Madrid to be the so-called 'confirmed treble-winners every season they played'. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Samuel transfer has been the best coup of the transfer window so far. They get arguably the world's best defender at just 20+ m Euros. I believe Helguera has been poor in defence for Real this season. But I can't blame him since he's partnered by a nobody like Pavon and protected by 2 players who were no DM but forced to play like DMs.

Milan got Stam, who is a very good defender. But this will force Maldini to play on the left. Can he still do that??? I'm not sure. And I have rarely seen this Dhorasoo dude so I have no idea if they have done the best in the transfer market.

Roma may have been the worst so far. But there's a good chance we'll overtake them for that position once we signed to absolutely un-needer players in Veron and Cambiasso.

Ten bucks that Stam will play right back and Cafu takes a Rui Costa role.

If I was Florentino Perez then buying Samuel would only be a start. I would then go after 2 more defenders just to be completely safe. Perhaps Squillaci and another young defensive prodigy to really make the backline solid. I would then push Helguera back into the DM spot where he belongs and buy Xabi Alonso to play there with him. I would then bench Beckham or have him and Figo rotate

I've seen Dhorasso many times. He is the kind of player that will try and dribble three times and only once he'd get passed a player. He is average and is also getting older.

I think it'd be: Cafu -- Nesta -- Stam -- Maldini and when necessary: Stam --Nesta -- Maldini -- Kaladze. So no matter how you look at it they'd have one heck of a defence but they will lack pace and that's when you unleash the secret duo of Martins -- Eliakuw!!!

Milan sure as hell have a grand-daddy defence. If they play with Cafu, Nesta, Maldini and Stam; no oppotunist striker like Vieri or Ruud or Gilardino will get a chance against them. But like Hamed said, pacy unpredictable players like Henry, Martins or Eliawku will wreak havoc on them!!!

Roma agree Mexes terms - report
    Sunday 23 May, 2004

French newspaper L’Equipe maintains Roma have agreed terms with Auxerre for Philippe Mexes, while they look to Milan to replace Emerson.

It had already been reported that the Giallorossi were pinpointing Mexes to shore up their defence following the £18m sale of Walter Samuel to Real Madrid.

The player is a popular target among Europe’s biggest clubs, but the French press insists that Auxerre have already reached a basic agreement with the Olimpico outfit for approximately £4m.

L’Equipe also suggests that Mexes will “be in the Italian Capital next week to discuss personal terms and meet Coach Fabio Capello.”

Mexes was one of the players named by Francesco Totti when he demanded the team remain competitive if he was to stay on.

“It is not true that we will be in Rome next week,” assured agent Olivier Joanneaux on Goalcity.it, “but I know that Capello is a big fan of Philippe and there are negotiations in place. It is pointless denying that.”

However, the representative did assure that the deal was far from sealed and delivered.

“Juventus are also interested in Mexes, as are a very prestigious English side, so the talks are still wide open. The French transfer market opens tomorrow, but I think we’ll know a lot more about his future in about ten days.”

Meanwhile, some midfield reinforcements must also be found before Emerson completes his expected move to Juventus.

With Udinese’s David Pizarro and the out of contract Edgar Davids seemingly out of reach, it’s rumoured that Roma are now aiming for Massimo Ambrosini.

The Italian international missed out on Euro 2004 due to his lack of first team football at Milan and he is ready to move on following the arrival of Vikash Dhorasoo from Lyon.

27-year-old Ambrosini is a talented holding midfielder and would only cost the cash-strapped Giallorossi in the region of £4m.

In other transfer news, the Spanish press reports that Inter benchwarmer Jeremie Brechet is close to signing for Real Sociedad in a £2m deal.

I really wish Roma all the luck. I hope they sign Mexes, Amrbosini/Perrotta and Gilardino/Morientes. It's really sad seeing them dismantle a great squad and i pray to God that we never get in their situation. After Inter, Roma is my favourite serie A club and if Inter doesn't win a scudetto i immediately hope that Roma wins it.

Same with me here. My favourite non-Inter player is Totti & Crespo. But honesly, I'm happy that they got dismantled. For the good of Inter. Inter will have one lesser rival challenging for the Scudetto.

Conte leaves Juventus as Kapo arrives
    Posted on 27 May 2004 - 18:06

Antonio Conte © Getty ImagesFormer Italy midfielder Antonio Conte has left Juventus after 13 seasons with the Serie A club.

The 34-year-old told Italian news agency ANSA on Thursday that he had turned down a new offer with the Turin side.

Conte's exit comes as French midfielder Olivier Kapo completed his move from AJ Auxerre to Juve.

The Italians said on their website Kapo had visited the club and tied up the final details of his move to the Delle Alpi.

The 27-times Italian champions are without a coach after Marcello Lippi left the club at the end of the season.

They are expected to announce an appointment in the next week with Monaco's French coach, former Juve midfielder Didier Deschamps, widely tipped for the job.

Conte, who has suffered a series of injuries in the past four seasons, said the offer he had received from Juve was "inadequate" but added that "maybe it was the right decision because we have reached the end of a cycle".

The midfielder, who joined Juventus from Lecce in November 1991 and made 20 appearances for Italy, said he was not sure if he would continue his playing career.

"I haven't decided whether to give up playing or not because I am a little confused about my future. It is certain though that either this year or the next I want to start my career as a coach," he said.

Kapo is Juve's second French signing of the close season following the arrival of defender Jonathan Zebina from Roma.

And I´d say we are looking great thus far. No players signed, which means no players that we don´t need has been signed.

Sometimes not acting, is the best weapon.

Well, as my opinion is that the squad we have now, is the one we should build around, then any signing will be unneeded.

Can we stay like that for the next 2-3 months??? I doubt so. And there's still Euro 2004, where teams go to scout the players, Inter included.
