    The pronounciation thread

    I'm pretty sure most of you cannot pronounce Italian words correctly since we all speak different languages etc...

    I'm not gonna do it the English way, since most people won't get it (eg. aeroplane-> air-oh-plain(whatever)

    I'm starting off with letters which are the most important! I'm not sure if there are some exceptions

    cc-> CH (eg Lecce-> LeCHe)
    cch-> Q (eg Del Vecchio-> Del VeQio)
    z-> tz (eg Zanetti-> TZanetti
    zz-> ts (eg pizza-> piTSa)
    gh-> gk (eg Ghelfi-> GKelfi)
    nc(usually)-> nch (eg Francesco-> FraNCHesco)

    I hope this helped some people that have difficulties in pronouncing some quite important words like Spezia(SpeTSia) etc etc

    The translators are free to correct me of course, since my Italian is limited

    its more
    ce or ci =CH
    ch=k or q

    youre nc example only works because its the c is followed by the e.

    gh- is more of a hard g. as in get or i guess spaghetti (but usuing that example is like defining a word using the word).

    I think Francesco is more like:

    Fran (The Depor player)
    Ces (The Arsenal player)
    Co (From Coco, our left-back on loan)

    You've heard the commentators pronouncing their name, haven't you?

    I think Dejan is De-yan, thou I'm really not sure and javier is (probably) Kha-vier (comes from the back of the roof of the mouth) or Ha-vier. Someone correct me if I'm wrong or sound like an idiot.

    No you're correct

    Spanish people(or spanish speaking) do not pronounce H. So Ivan Helguera, is Elguera and Hierro is Ierro... And J and X is kh for them(Spain though is different, Catalan and Spanish, I'm not ure which is which...)

    So when they laugh, on boards, they type JAJAJAJAJA (sort of stupid for most of us, but that's how they speak )

    Looollll, dude I laughed my ass of reading this!!

    And one more important thing about Italian:
    gio, gia, giu- this is prounounced as english j. Examples- joke (gioke), jar (giar), julie (giulie). I always hear non-italians prounce it wrong.
    Same thing with cio, cia, ciu- choke (cioke), charles (ciarles), chewbacca (ciubacca).

    Don't know if I explained this well.

    both your examples are correct, to a degree.

    gi or ge no matter what they are followed by are pronounced similar to a english j. ghi or ghe are a hard g.

    same for ci and ce. they sound like the ch in english.
    and ch sounds like a k in english.

    Yeah that is right.

    Also:
    sc- when followed by i or e it is pronounced as english sh. Example: scimia (monkey)- shimia.
