I heard it had something to do with them playing back in the day in a snow storm and the other team could not see their white jersey and those were the only ones they had there with them. Therefore they got the local team to ship in some of their jerseys which were light blue (azzurri) and they played in them and they ended up winning the game.

I am not sure if this story is actually true but I do know that I have read something to this effect somewhere before.

I think its because of their beautiful blue "cielo"( sky) and their beautiful blue sea. I don't remember where I read that.

    No its not!

Why do Italy play in blue when their flag is orange, white and green? asks Jon Davis

The Italian national team wear blue because it is the colour of Savoia, the ruling house of Italy from 1861 to 1946. Until the end of the second world war, the Italian flag always had the Savoy coat of arms in the centre, and it was only after the family were overthrown, and the ItalianRepublic established in 1946, that the plain tricolor was adopted as the national flag.

Also, consider the fact that Bulgaria and Mexico share the tricolore of Green, White, and Red, and this may have influenced the Italians to choose the unique Azzuri.
