I'm not asking for the old 01/02 Vieri to return but Vieri could have and should be able to to change his gamestyle and rely on his physical presence more than ever. He could also improve his goal-scoring sense and finishing. Vieri will be 33 at the World Cup 06. That should be the point where he retires from the NT, not now. He still has some unfinished business to do.
Ok, you definately haven't understood what i was suggesting about Bobo. I think he's still a fine striker, but in order to enjoy his best football it would be smart if he quits now instead of going untill 2006. I personally don't think he'll be at top form to start for the Azzurri by then. You're looking into what i said way too much and making it look like i bashed him, and it's quite the contrary actually.

The Vieri of old will never return, i am 90% sure of this. It isn't possible, he was scoring at an unreal pace back then. As time keeps going, his physical attributes won't be as leathal on the defenders and he'll be easier to contain. At this point he still has the ability to get into wicked positions on set pieces and is still amazingly aware of where the ball is to put a head in, but i fear he won't be on top form in two years from now. So in order to just give the future a chance, i hinted he should quit the national team. Ofcourse, that doesn't mean that what i suggested was even close to being realistic - just my opinion.

Btw, there is no written law saying where there's a point for a player to retire from the NT. It could be at 30 years old or it could be at 38 years old, all depends on how their performing and feeling. As for your comment about Pele, for every Pele that can play for his country for long there are a dozens of players who can't keep up with the level they were once at and fail. Unfortunately, i don't put Bobo in Pele's category for 2 years from now.

    Hmm,

I don't think Vieri will feature much in Lippi's squad...
why? because I heard Lippi was trying to use young players...

Vieri may be still the best italian striker, but deploying Gillardino will be Lippi's choice.

that will be the end of Cannavaro and Matrix as well for the NT...

The end of Cannavaro? Noooo!! Remember that the power of Lippi will have limits. As every national team coach, Lippi won't have absolute liberty in terms of choosing the squad. Do you think it's a coincidence that so many coaches didn't let Roberto Baggio play? I surely don't...

I'm sure Vieri will be in Germany in 2006, maybe not a starter but he'll be there. Gilardino is promising but he needs a good season in a top team before he can be considered a valid alternative to Bobo.

Canna is not going anywhere, he's the captain and he's always going to be a starter.

You'll see that all of the CHANGE Lippi is going to make will be calling up Gilardino.

Agreed, Canna's performances for Italia have been of top notch quality. He's at his best when representing his country and as the captain, he should be there by World Cup 2006.

Lippi wiill have to give De Rossi, Gilardino, Cassano and all the other youngsters a chance to prove themselves. However, he seems to hold a grudge on Maresca from what i can tell. Why else would he never play? kid is awesome.

Cassano for sure, he was already our best player at Euro 2004 (well after Zambrotta). De Rossi? Gosh he's just a kid, and everytime I saw him playing he never did anything spectacular... I remember he almost scored a great goal against Samp in the last day of Serie A, but that's about it... I don't see him making any kind of impact with the senior National Team

Cassano was the best player at the Euro IMO. He proved to have heart and wasn't scared to try his luck and go at the defenders while some of our other key players where no where to be found and so conservative.

Giving our youngsters a chance now is important. The way i see it, Italia will have many different starters going into World Cup 2006. I believe guys like Gila, Ferrari, De Rossi, Maresca should be given a chance as all the current starters at their positions aren't the players they once were.

I see your point, but it'll be a problem. I mean look at Del Piero, for instance. The guy SUCKED for Italy starting at France 98, but he's always been playing, first taking Baggio's place (grr yuk), and even at Euro 2004, if it wasn't for Totti's spitting disaster, Del Piero would have taken Cassano's place in the squad.

So where can we fit De Rossi or Maresca? Ferrari will be Cannavaro's back up I think, instead of Matrix. About Gilardino we'll have to see what he does this season in a big club.

I think of it quite the contrary, Lippi is coming into the nazionale and doesn't want to start up on the wrong foot. He'll be calling up basically the same players as the European championship on August 18th when we face Iceland but with a mixture of a few youngsters like Ferrari and Cassano. Then as the season goes on unlike Trap if some young players are proving to be worthy of a shot with the Azzurri he will call them up.

Yeah he will call them up, but they won't play. They will play just the friendly matches and the small games.

For Ferrari to play, Lippi needs to bench Nesta or Cannavaro. The italian media and public opinion put any coach of the national team under a huge amount of pressure. If he plays Ferrari instead of Cannavaro and Italy loses, they would run him over with a tank.

What you say will start to happen with Euro 2008, when the actual players will be too old, probably many of them will be retired.

BUFFON, CANNAVARO, NESTA, DEL PIERO, TOTTI will all be starters at the World Cup unless they're injured. I think VIERI will as well. Cassano should do, let's hope Lippi will give him a major role in his squad, possibly in place of crappy Del Piero.

I for one dont like Lippi that much after his coaching job at Inter...He even couldnt see some good potential in some good players we had..The thing i like recently though is that he will have the courage to sit out big names if they arent good, like DP recently.

I hope that continues for Italy's sake though and not change when it comes time for the tournament and we see players that play based on names and reputations in the past...

Lippi did very well for Juve in the 90s IMO. BUT... their trophies are not all valid because of systematic doping abuse.

And who doesnt remember Season of Poison?

Oh yeah, I say you played badly, big time!! Always waiting for a corner or a lucky chance. Never creating anythiing. Yuk!

I guess in the end you get what you deserve, so Juve got to the final and then lost!

Lippi shouldn't be too suprised about losing finals, since when they met Milan 2 years ago, apparently they forgot to play!

We didn't have Nedved, that settled it...

Anyway, since when Italians demand creative football?! They demand results, and if Italy wins WC with Lippi, nobody complains, that's for sure...

Well if you don't care about how you play and you just want to win, start winning the freaking final!!

I see that in your opinion the only decent player in Juve's squad is Nedved, since you think that they couldn't even give Milan a challenge without him...

Once upon a time there was a team from the city of Milan. They used to wear black and blue jerseys.

A team from London came to Milan to avenge a humiliation, and they did, beating them 5-1.

Only 3 days later they went to Turin, to play the Gobbi, who were unbeaten in Italy and Europe.

They didn't have Cannavaro, or Materazzi, and played with Gamarra and Adani.

They didn't have the mighty turk Emre, and Almeyda played instead.

They also didn't have Vieri, and Cruz played in his place.

Here starts the real fairy tale
