    Ventola involed in betting scandal

Betting scandal hits calcio - updated Tuesday 11 May, 2004

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twelve Italian clubs are to be probed by anti-Mafia police into alleged links between gambling and organised crime.

News of the investigation broke this morning when a Naples based anti-Mafia unit visited the headquarters of Siena.

The Tuscan outfit insisted that they were victims in the whole affair, while revealing that another 11 Italian clubs were connected in the investigation.

"We are very calm about the situation," stated director general Walter Scapigliati. "That is because we are the victims in this case."

The club also issued a statement which helped to fully outline what had actually occurred today.

"Police have opened an investigation regarding gambling and organised crime, one which may involve a number of players," it read. "Twelve clubs are involved on a national scale."

The identity of the other clubs have since been revealed, with three other Serie A sides being mentioned.

They are Chievo, Lecce and Reggina. The Serie B and C outfits named are Piacenza, Ascoli, Lumezzane, Sassari, Taranto, Catanzaro, Crotone and Fermana.

Unconfirmed reports allege that some of this season’s games could have been affected, with the aid of some players, after a string of suspicious internet bets.

It was alleged that as many as 20 players could be involved and five have already been named as part of the investigation.

It’s been reported that Siena’s Roberto D'Aversa, Generoso Rossi – who has now left the club - and Nicola Ventola are helping police with their enquiries.

Grosseto player Salvatore Ambrosino and former Juve Stabia player Vincenzo Onorato are doing the same.

Eight other people are also aiding the authorities. No charges have been made against any clubs or individuals and the investigation continues.

Lecce President Quirico Semeraro said: "The police arrived and asked for documents which we have given them. We have nothing to do with this."

Reggina chief Lillo Foti added: "They can do all the checks that they want. We are as calm as Siena are."

Well, we've all seen how easily refs can be bought off. Just remember Pelligrino in the Coppa Italia and Milan's Easter Egg.

Tele-text and stuff mention this as well and just have to point out that Ventola is an old Inter player. So once again, Inter will come out of this looking bad, even when we aren´t even involved.

Don't prejudge Ventola yet. Let's see what happens with the investigation and not rush to conclusions and condemnations like many did with Kallon. I hope Ventola is innocent, i only remember him as a nice player and a family man. I wish he is found innocent, for his sake and inter's.

Also, when the authorities are done with this investigation, maybe it's time someone investigated Juve's and Milan's dealings with refs. Let's not flex our muscles on the weak guys only.

Ventola hasn't been found guilty yet so why have we condemn him??? And besides, he isn't an Inter player anymore and hasn't been since the summer of 2002. But, since I (We/Inter) owe him for shouldering the burden of Vieri's injury in 01/02, I support Ventola and hope that he isn't gulity in this case.

    Nicola Ventola

He is still under contract with us and he has come back to take part of the pre-retreat training.

Now, this is a player that I think most of us are very fond of. Ventola has during the years showed enormous dedication towards Inter and you can sense that he really likes the club. Even though he´s been neglected most of the time.

Ventola had an average season last season with Siena where he was a part of a rotation system with Flo and Chiesa. He didn´t score that many goals at all, and I was quite dissappointed.

My question is: What should we do with him? Keep him and give him number 78 for the coming season and use him as a back-up? Ventola though, is very similar to Julio Cruz.

My heart says keep him, but my mind says we should sell him for good so he can break loose from this club and go on with his career.

i have already posted on ventola in the other thread .... but let me do it here as well

I guess he's in retreat coz of one or two of the following reasons :

    (1) He didn't find a club. He didn't have a good season with Siena (If I am not wrong, he did score 2 goals against JUVE though ). But most importantly, he was also involved in a scandal, isn't it ?? or you forgot it ? betting scandal ?? or is it already over ??

    (2) The other reason cud be that Mancini cud have wanted to see him in the retreat and friendlies, before making the final decision. Or Ventola might have wanted to be in Inter. One or two season/s back, when he was in Atalanta or ??, he had made a statement that he wud rather be Inter's 5th/6th striker than being a 3rd striker in that club where he was playing ... something like that ??

Ventola (in my view) is a better back up striker than Kallon!

Ventola is a fan favorite but he sucks. I don't have any affectiosn for any players but Vieri so neutrallly I say Kallon and Cruz are better.

Yeah u see..VEntola I think is worse thatn Cruz..thats up for debate. And based on stats, my point is right. And as for Kallon, I like having an option for a forward/attacking midfielder rather than only a forward.
