This year Italy hosts the Euro U21 finals, a tournament Italy has done very well in historically, but have not won for a while. IMO this is the tournament that builds future world champions, so I hope the Azzurrini put their best foot forward and also include the best players from the senior team who are still eligible as well as promote some of the gifted players from junior teams.

This is the starting XI I would like to see win this championship:

    Kean - Cutrone
    Zaniolo
    Barella - Tonali - Mandragora
    Pezzella - Romagna - Mancini - Calabria
    Meret

    Thats a strong looking team.

Yeah this team certainly has good potential. I would say that Calabria is the only weak link.

Pezzella can become a fairly good LB.
My username has nothing to do with the player of liverpool fc, it is a reference to an Italian novel.

At least we can see a change here, before the main criticism with Italy is that players who play for U21 don't get enough professional football.

I'm curious, how do you guys think a midfield trio of Zaniolo - Verratti - Jorginho would work? Too light weight? Or enough quality to play possession football.

Was thinking this morning, and as of today my preferred lineup against Finland and Lichtenstein next month would be:

    Insigne - Quagliarella - Chiesa
    Jorginho - Verratti - Zaniolo
    Criscito - Chiellini - Romagnoli - Florenzi

    With Criscito/Biraghi and Zaniolo/Barella my mental toss-ups.

It seems silly that Quags is the best option at striker right now, but it feels pretty clear to me.

zaniolo hype is too big. I would play:

    veratti----barella
    -----jorginho----

    That's an early experimental midfield.

Once Mancini realizes it's not defensively sound he will go.

Although you don't like Mancio, you have to admit his team choices have been pretty ballsy he's been picking young attacking sides with flair players up front.

Kinda think it's because he wasn't called up when he was a player.

Easy to be ballsy when there's nothing actually on the line (wc qualification, actually in world cup/euro cup elimination etc).

Also, Mancini is very savy. He clearly loves to be fired and receive a pay out for the remainder of the contract. He's been doing that since 2008!

I think Mancini has enough money to retire why would he want a severance package?

Anyway, we'll see if he keeps the core of his team with the youth players he has been calling up but so far I think his call ups have been good even considering that some Milanisti thought his Zaniolo call up (before he blew up) was some FFP conspiracy in collusion with Inter.

Mancini has done exceedingly well so far with the Azzurri, considering where he took over from. He has revitalised the squad with youth, put a lot of faith on talent, something the Azzurri have been crying for in the last decade. This has given great confidence to some of the youngsters and you can see that by the improving form of the likes of Chiesa, Barella, Zaniolo, etc.

Most importantly, the biggest improvement has been on the style of play. The old dog seems to have learnt new tricks, I haven't seen Italy play in such an attacking fashion. Even when Italy had talents to do it with the likes of Baggio, Del Piero, Zola, Mancini, Signori, etc available at the same time, the coaches used to play 1 or 2 of them at a time in a pragmatic Italian style. I did not expect Mancini to play so attacking and positive, looks like he has been studying the modern developments in football. And to do that with such young and inexperienced players takes balls.

Veiri summed it up well in his interview today:

    Vieri: Mancini right for Italy
    By Football Italia staff

Christian Vieri says Roberto Mancini is the right CT to bring through Italy’s next generation. “After 10 years, I saw them play good again.”

The scorer of 23 Italy goals and an Azzurri representative at two World Cups, Vieri played alongside Mancini at Lazio before working under him at Inter.

“I played with him at Lazio, then he coached me at Inter,” the 45-year-old told BeIN Sports.

“He’s a good Coach, he’s won a lot of trophies, he has a lot of experience, he knows what players think.

“He knows when they’re in trouble, when they’re not in trouble, he knows when to say something to them, and I think with the youngsters, about four months ago they played a friendly game, I text him after the game and said after 10 years, I saw Italy play good again.

“They played good football for the whole 90 minutes. That’s what we want and I think we’re on the right track.

“Like I said, there’s a lot of young players coming up and I think he’s the right Coach for them.”

Well, I nailed the midfield and defense (minus Florenzi's injury).
