    Ballon d'Or Nominations

France Football has released the 30 players on the shortlist for their annual award.

Lionel Messi is the favourite to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or after being named on the 30-strong shortlist for the award that will be presented to Europe's best player in December.

The Argentinian has been widely tipped to top the rankings after helping Barcelona to a unique treble of trophies last and joins four others who helped achieve the feat, as well as new team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

While no Italian players were named, the four Serie A-based imports were dwarfed by the 13 players from Spain's top flight, while the nominees from the Premier League all came from the big four clubs.

Ryan Giggs has been included and should be mentioned for a lifetime achievement award after showing incredible longevity at the top for Manchester United.

Away from Spain; England and Italy, only France's Yoann Gourcuff represented his own league, while Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko and Bayern's Franck Ribery have been put forward from Germany's Bundesliga.

    The 30-man shortlist:

    Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
    Maicon (Inter Milan)
    Andres Iniesta (Barcelona)
    Diego (Juventus)
    Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Barcelona)
    Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)
    Thierry Henry (Barcelona)
    Edin Dzeko (Wolfsburg)
    Xavi (Barcelona)
    Yoann Gourcuff (Bordeaux)
    Yaya Toure (Barcelona)
    Andrey Arshavin (Arsenal)
    Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)
    Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)
    Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
    Didier Drogba (Chelsea)
    Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
    Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
    Kaka (Real Madrid)
    John Terry (Chelsea)
    Luis Fabiano (Sevilla)
    Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
David Villa (Valencia) Fernando Torres (Liverpool)
    Diego Forlan (Atletico Madrid)
    Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
    Samuel Eto'o (Inter Milan)
    Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
    Julio Cesar (Inter Milan)
    Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)

Yeah they could have scrapped the shortlist and just give it to Messi.

No team should be allowed more than 5 Ballon d'Or candidates at a given time! I propose a new law that would force Barcelona to give us Messi and Xavi for Vieira and Quaresma!

Yeah but Ronaldo played for them till July too, so that makes it even.

Actually, Eto'o was for Barcelona. So if you go by that logic we are behind by 1.

First place is already confirmed. I'm wondering about 2nd and 3rd though. Rightfully, 2nd should be Xavi's, who will definitely be in the top 3 at least. Iniesta has been injury prone since the CL final and thus the lesser number of games lessen his credential IMO. The 3rd name will be a mystery though. Will it be given to Iniesta or will FIFA try to avoid the Barca-bias controversy or succumb to marketing shit and award it to CR9 or Kaka?

Yeah, official announcement tomorrow but already leaked that Leo received 473 out of 480 votes...Obviously, everyone except a few Madridistas, eh?

Looks like Clownaldo is 2nd, Xavi 3rd...Media loves the diver as it's a travesty that Xavi isn't better recognized

Thats insane. In fact its a travesty that Messi got so many votes. Xavi and Iniesta deserved better.

That's insane indeed and may be unfair to Xavi & Iniesta but honestly, the things Messi did last season was just out of this world.

And CR9 ending up at 3 is truly laughable but what can you do, he is this decade's Beckham.

Barca have to repeat what they did last season or just win CL and Spain must win WC. In this case Xavi without a doubt will win Ballon d'Or next year.
