Real's Camacho offers to resign: report
    [19 Sep 2004]
    MADRID (AFP)

Real Madrid's under-fire coach Jose Antonio Camacho has offered to resign after the club's poor start to the campaign.

Cadena Ser radio said Camacho had spoken to Real chairman Florentino Perez and offered to stand down but Perez had asked him to sleep on it until Monday.

Real lost at Espanyol on Saturday, their first defeat in the league this season, but the reverse came hot on the heels of Wednesday's Champions League 3-0 drubbing at Bayer Leverkusen, which sparked huge criticism of the club's poor form.

The 49-year-old Camacho has only been in the post since taking over from the sacked Carlos Queiroz, fired after the nine-times European champions could only reach the last eight of the Champions League last season while losing five straight league games to place fourth in La Liga.

Camacho was a stalwart with Real as a player, making more than 400 appearances for the meringues between 1973-89 during which time he won nine Spanish league titles, three Spanish Cups and two UEFA Cups.

He won 81 caps for Spain and played in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.

He is currently in his second stint as coach at Real, where he lasted just three weeks in the summer of 1998 before resigning over a disagreement with former chairman Lorenzo Sanz over transfer policy.

He then went on to coach the Spanish national side for four years, after which he returned to the Bernabeu via a short stint with Portugal's Benfica.

But after persuading Perez to invest in the team's defence following four years of constantly landing attacking players such as Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham, Camacho has been frustrated by his side's poor showings.

They registered two single-goal wins over run-of-the-mill sides at the start of the campaign but were embarrassed in Leverkusen, who overran them in their Champions League opener.

In addition, there are reports of dressing room unease.

Saturday's loss to Espanyol has led to widespread talk of a club in crisis, despite the summer arrival of two top-drawer centre halves in the shape of Argentine Walter Samuel and England's Jonathan Woodgate, as well as England striker Michael Owen.

Sweet music in my ears if true. Sacking or letting Camacho resign now would be stupid: How can it be the coachīs fault that they donīt have a good defensive midfielder. They have Helguera but I consider him more of a defender. Their squad is too slim IMO.

If given the chance I think Camacho has the chance to do much better. But he needs to realise that Morientes is better than Ronaldo because IMO he is. But I hope he wonīt change his mind fielding Traitor. However I would love to see Real in chaos, changing coaches...

I guess you pretty much don't have a choice when the coach offers the resignation letter, Gismo. It shows that he is not 100% fully committed to his job and what is the use of keeping such coach in the ship?

I'm shocked by this though. I know that there is a chaotic environment in the team with the addition of useless players like Owen but I never thought it will as bad as that it will force the coach to resign just after 4 games.

There has been views from some of the fans that what Camacho doing is unprofessional but I disagree with them, although there is some truth in it. I believe that if you want to be respected, you should respect the others. Camacho's decision on Owen's transfer fell into deaf ears and this is disrespectful at its highest level. He may have said it to the media that he welcomed his arrival but it's pretty obvious by his tone that it was simply a diplomatic lie to cover up his unhappiness.

I have also developed a thoery which I am not sure of but I'll just say it out. It is known that Camacho is as big as a Real Madrid fan as we are. Perhaps his resignation is a warning to the club that it cannot continue on this current Galactico ways. There are too many individual egos in the club and I am pretty sure that the players are not close too each other. I have a feeling the 3 English players will form a 'camp' of their own. The old-timers like Raul, Morientes, Helguera and Guti has another one. Ronaldo is just a party animal who gives a f*ck about the club as long as he's provided with one new model every night and a paycheck on his doors. Etc etc. A club like this will never succeed no matter how good the players are individually. Maybe, just maybe Camacho is tired of following such club as a fan and thus fired a warning slap to Perez's face.

Btw, latest rumour claim that Sven is gonna take over. If it's true, Perez has overtaken Moratti in terms of their flying circus' stupidity.

Deep down i hate to see them fuck up this badly, cause ive always sorta liked them. But one day some coach will realise Zidane, Raul, Figo, R.Carlos and Ronaldo are past their prime. For future seasons Moro and Owen should form then new strike partnership with Portillo their replacement, a defensive mid (Mascherano (SP?)) will finally allow Beckham to play his beloved right midfield role which his best at.

Samuel will form a partnership with woodgate, Pavon and Helguera will be their backup.

They will need a new left back too, so in the end they will have a complete new team in the future.

    ---------------Casillas------------
    Salgado-Samuel-Woodgate-???

    ----------------????----------------
    Beckham--------------------Solari
    ----------------????----------------

    --------El Moro--------Owen------

A new offensive midfielder, defensive mifielder and a new left back and they'll be set. It might not look as elegant but if 2 hard working players are brought in they will be great.

They have 2 good backup defenders on the bench. Camacho should stay and build on this. Owen and Moro works great cause owen always goes wide with his crosses. Now for them to have a dream team they need.

Sure you donīt need unfaithful/uncomitted players or coaches such as Camacho or Cannavaro. But in the formerīs case it would be shear stupidity to sack him now. We all know the reasons why too well... It should only be done in extreme cases such as Cuper case IMO. And it isnīt fair to say he screwed up with such a slim squad lacking a freeking ballwinner and better defenders... Samuel takes time to integrate too.

His mistakes so far has IMO been to play Ronaldo over Morientes and Zidane over Solari. And Beckam belongs on the right wing and NOT in La Liga if you ask me.

I agree it must be a protest if itīs true! So I completely agree with your third paragraph. And I believe your theory is true.

I donīt think theyīll get Sven. And I hope not! Cuper on the other hand would be wonderful... Imagine how critised he would be for benching all those offensive players in his strictly defensive 4-4-2 system. With him: So much for the popular "Los Galacticos"...

It's official then, Camacho's gone, replaced by coach assistant Mariano García Remón. This is only temporary though, right? I wonder who's coming to replace him...

Being a fan of them especially before the Perez Era , Now i really don't like this team with all the old stars in it . I hope that Otmar Hitzfield is the new Coach because i think it is impossible to let go of Sven .

I'm left shocked at what kind of club Real Madrid has become. They really have become a joke and for the time being, they're more of a laughing stock then ourselves and our president Moratti. This Galactico era has not only ended with no glory, but it's tooken away the most important thing a football club is supposed to have and that's it's heart, soul and self pride. I don't see any of those traits in Madrid, when watching them play you see a bunch of individuals who are just as ritch as can be and have no motivation to play any harder then their opponent. None of them sweat for the jersey, in this case you'll never be able to win.

It's a known fact that Camacho is a fan of Madrid, so this says a lot about their current sittuation. Things must really be quite poor for him to just quit like that, he really seemed up to the task of dealing with such overrated primadonnas like Beckham as he benched him last weekend and at first he said that he wanted players fighting for his team and wouldn't have a zero tolerance policy, unlike Queiroz. I guess the pressure that comes with the job was too much for the him.

Shocking news, really. So early on during the season, I can hardly see how Madrid will be able to turn it around and turn this into a positive. Anyways, it must be a rude awakening to Perez and the Madrista's. But, I always knew making Real Madrid more of a bussiness before a football club was wrong and now it's going to come back and bite Perez real hard, he deserves it too if you ask me. The squad is in shambles, I mean not even Samuel could help that back-line.

This soap opera just keeps getting better and better, it's turned into a Galactico novela.
