    Greece

    10 years of FIF

    World Basketball Championship 2010

    Anyone gonna watch this one?

Starts on August 29, but since most leagues have ended I figured we could have a thread about it.

Very interested, as always, to see who the USA will send.

Greece does not seem very strong this time for me but the talent is definitely there. Some important players might not be there, like Diamantidis and Tsartsaris.

Lithuania has good players in the European stage (Jasikevicius who might play at age 34, Kleiza, the Lavrinovic brothers, Siskauskas,

Russia has Kirilenko(will he play?) but I'm not sure whether he can alone lead them to a good position.

Spain are the best European team so I'd expect at least semis from them. Gasol brothers, Rudy Fernandez, Jose Calderon, Juan Navarro, Ricky Rubio & co are really phenomenal players, They can feed Pau Gasol under the basket, or fire 3pts for fun, as well as do the basics(drive, pick and roll). They make it seem so easy, it's delightful.

Argentina has good players, but I doubt they'll go further than last 8. Luis Scola, Manu Ginobili, Pablo Prigioni, Andres Nocioni, Carlos Delfino... I really like them.

Germany is a man one team as usual, but sometimes he's too good for opposition(Dirk Nowitzki)

France is a very athletic team, maybe you could call them a less talented, European USA team. Tony Parker and many other NBA stars are part of this team. I would really want to see them Vs the USA and vs Spain. Would be amazing games. I will probably bet on them to win this thing.

Serbia has been in a decline and I hope they manage something good this year. I'd consider Velickovic and Tripkovic their best players, with Tepic and Teodosic able to become great for a night or two, but they are not consistent players. There's also Krstic who plays in the NBA but I haven't seen him.

Turkey is the host nation, so I wouldn't write them off. Would not be surprised to see them in the last 4. There's Ilyasova and Turkoglu who are NBA players, the rest are nothing special, not even in Europe, but home ground can be helpful, considering that the Turks create some scary atmosphere.

From wiki, this is the preliminary USA roster: (in bold my choices/thoughts)

    LaMarcus Aldridge Portland Trail Blazers
    Carmelo Anthony Denver Nuggets
    Chris Bosh Toronto Raptors
    Kobe Bryant Los Angeles Lakers
    Chauncey Billups Denver Nuggets
    Carlos Boozer Utah Jazz
    Kevin Durant Oklahoma City Thunder
    Rudy Gay Memphis Grizzlies
    Eric Gordon Los Angeles Clippers
    Danny Granger Indiana Pacers
    Dwight Howard Orlando Magic
    Andre Iguodala Philadelphia 76ers
    LeBron James Cleveland Cavaliers
    Al Jefferson Minnesota Timberwolves
    David Lee New York Knicks
    Brook Lopez New Jersey Nets
    Kevin Love Minnesota Timberwolves
    O.J. Mayo Memphis Grizzlies
    Lamar Odom Los Angeles Lakers
    Chris Paul New Orleans Hornets
    Kendrick Perkins Boston Celtics
    Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls
    Tayshaun Prince Detroit Pistons
    Stephen Curry Golden State Warriors
    Tyreke Evans Sacramento Kings
    Amare Stoudemire Phoenix Suns
    Dwyane Wade Miami Heat
    Gerald Wallace Charlotte Bobcats
    Russell Westbrook Oklahoma City Thunder
    Deron Williams Utah Jazz

That's just somehow what I expect. Maybe a bit more balanced than that though.

    GROUP A

    Argentina
    Serbia
    Australia
    Germany
    Angola
    Jordan

    GROUP B

    USA
    Slovenia
    Brazil
    Croatia
    Iran
    Tunisia

    GROUP C

    Greece
    Turkey
    Puerto Rico
    Russia
    China
    Côte d'Ivoire

    GROUP D

    Spain
    France
    Canada
    Lithuania
    New Zealand
    Lebanon

Four teams qualify from each group, A crosses with B, C crosses with D, 1st-4th, 2nd-3rd.

Expect a hard fought race for 2nd place in Group B between Brazil (Varejao, Nene, Splitter, Barbosa), Slovenia(Dragic, Brezec, Smodis, Lakovic, E.Lorbek) and Croatia(no superstar but ex-Yugo nations are always tough)

Group A seems very very balanced but I see one of Germany and Serbia facing the USA in next round.

Group C is quite weak, but there are some good one-player teams there(China, Russia). It will be interesting to see personal stats there eg Pts, rebounds etc

I will try not to miss a sinlge Group D game. One of the best groups ever! France vs Spain will be a classic game, Lithuania is tough and if Steve Nash plays for Canada it will be sweet.

Will be a heck of a World championship!!!

( I hope I'm not the only one who will follow it!!!)

Well to be fair I skipped all the bits about countries and thought all that was linked to the country above.

I heard that Tony Parker, Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki and Yao Ming will not participate. That would be a big blow. Also heard about either Varejao or Nene from Brazil that won't participate and from Argentina Manu Ginobili. It will be interesting, but maybe not entertaining as one would expect...
As for the USA, whoever they send, they will be medal contenders, so we don't care that much

I want to see at least Carmelo, Wade, Chris Paul, Bosh, Brook Lopez and Kevin Durant in the USA team. Deron Williams would be great as well

    Saw complaints for the "draw".
There's no way USA and Spain will meet eachother before the final, assuming that both receive 1st spot in their groups. Greece will meet the USA in the qf if they do not win the group. Turkey has a pretty easy route as well(hosts)

    Greek squad:

    Dimitris Diamantidis (Panathinaikos)
    Kostas Tsartsaris (Panathinaikos)
    Antonis Fotsis (Panathinaikos)
    Vasilis Spanoulis (Panathinaikos)
    Nick Calathes (Panathinaikos)
    Stratos Perperoglou (Panathinaikos)
    Giorgos Printezis (Malaga)
    Sofoklis Schortsianitis (Olympiakos)
    Giannis Bourousis (Olympiakos)
    Loukas Mavrokefalidis (Olympiakos)
    Panagiotis Vasilopoulos (Olympiakos)
    Kostas Papanikolaou (Olympiakos)
    Nikos Zisis (Siena)
    Kostas Vasiliadis (Obradoiro)
    Kostas Kaimakoglou (Marousi)
    Ian Vougioukas (Panellinios)
    Nikos Pappas (Kolossos)

Can't understand how Vasilopoulos was called up. Hasn't played regularly for 8 months, while there's the option of Pelekanos (Marousi, former Real Madrid)

    Expected most used players:
    Diamantidis
    Spanoulis
    Zisis
    Bourousis
    Fotsis

That's 3 guards, 1 (power) forward and one center. The usual Greek set, copied by Panathinaikos of course

    Group C

This group is going to be interesting.

I dont know yet is Russia is bringing their A team, nor Greece.. China is probably without their best player ever in Yao Ming and Turkey will be w/o Okur... Ivory Coast I really dont know them... Puerto Rico probably will be with all its players.

And since Im from PR this is Puerto Rico's preliminary squad

Carlos Arroyo - Miami Heat (NBA)
JJ Barea - Dallas Mavericks (NBA)
Renaldo Balckman - Denver Nuggets (NBA)
Daniel Santiago - Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR)
Angelo Reyes - Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR)
Guillermo Diaz - Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR)
Larry Ayuso - Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR)
PJ Ramos - Piratas de Quebradillas (PUR)
Ricky Sanchez - Cangrejeros de Santurce (PUR)
Luis Villafane - Cangrejeros Santurce (PUR)
Filiberto Rivera - Gallitos de Isabela - (PUR)
Angel D. Vasallo - Gallitos de Isabela - (PUR)
Denis Clemente - Kansas State Wildcats (NCAA)
Carmelo Lee - Vaqueros de Bayamon (PUR)
Nathan Peavy - Vaqueros de bayamon (PUR)
Javier Mojica - Vaqueros de bayamon (PUR)

Most of them have played in european leagues, Larry Ayuso, Angel Vasallo, PJ Ramos, Guilermo Diaz, Daniel Santiago, Filiberto Rivera... And on international play so they have experience...

I think that they can play with anybody in their group... the thoughest games will be agaisnt the 3 europeans, and I think we can win all 3...

High expectations on Serbia, Brazil and France. (meaning they will play well, not advance till semis or something)

A major disadvantage is that most top players will not participate.

Group D seems much more interesting that Group C tbf.

Lithuania, Spain and France will have amazing games between them. Probably Spain and France will thrash the other three teams, but still it will have the best games of the group stage.
Don't like Group A's competitiveness, but I am looking forward to watch Argentina in action.
Group C has the USA, and there's Brazil and Slovenia to battle for 2nd place. Not a balanced group at all.
Group B has fine games, but China without Yao is just bad. Puerto Rico always has good players, but I think it's been a while since they last did something good in such a tournament. Nobody really knows the Ivorian team, Greece and Turkey should qualify, and it will be up to Russia's roster if this is gonna be the best group. If it includes Kirilenko, games vs Greece & Turkey will be fun to watch. If he does not show up, it will be good games, but Russians will be the underdogs.

Top 4 spots from each group:
    A1 Argentina
    A2 Australia
    A3 Serbia
    A4 Germany
    B1 USA
    B2 Slovenia
    B3 Brazil
    B4 Croatia
    C1 Greece
    C2 Turkey
    C3 Russia
    C4 Puerto Rico
    D1 Spain
    D2 France
    D3 Lithuania
    D4 Canada

    Turkey

As i said, Turkish Basketball team at its weakest time at the moment. My hopes are very low and it would surprise me so much if we reach last 4. However, we will have a big supporter advantage and you know, Turkey is famous for it.. It might lead the team a bit further but still, i'm very pessimistic about this tournament.

No matter what it will be nice to watch as always.

    TOP 4 in each Group

    Group A

    1. Argentina
    2. Australia
    3. Germany
    4. Serbia

    Group B

    1. USA
    2. Slovenia
    3. Brazil
    4. Croatia

    Group C

    1. Greece
    2. Turkey
    3. Puerto Rico
    4. Russia

    Group D

    1. Spain
    2. France
    3. Lithuania
    4. Canada

I think Group B 2-4 and C 1-3 would be placed through goal average...

A1 vs B4 (Argentina vs Croatia)
D2 vs C3 (France vs Puerto Rico)

C1 vs D4 (Greece vs Canada)
B2 vs A3 (Slovenia vs Germany)

B1 vs A4 (USA vs Serbia)
C2 vs D3 (Turkey vs Lithuania)

D1 vs C4 (Spain vs Russia)
A2 vs B3 (Australia vs Brazil)

Honestly I think we have a pretty good chance against France... I also think Croatia can shock Argentina(not that It'll happen but...) Also Greece, Slovenia, USA, Turkey, Spain and Brazil wins)
