I have been an Interista since 1998. I have celebrated victories, losing my voice in the process, and I have been devastated after defeats, losing tears in the process. It didn't matter who Inter played, be it in the pre-season or Coppa Italia or even at the last game of the league I would care. And I did not want Inter to lose! I remember at the end of the 2008/2009 season we played at home to Atalanta in what was supposed to be simply a game highlighted by the fact that Luis Figo was saying goodbye after a magical career. The Scudetto was already won, but we found ourselves trailing! Jose Mourinho, took it to heart and made 2 attacking changes that turned the game around and withing minutes the game was level and when Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored, what was to be his final goal for Inter, I went ballistic, almost as much as I did the year before when he scored the brace that won us the Scudetto! That game had no purpose! Yet me and everyone at the Scudetto went livid!
You want proof:
Perhaps it was due to the fact that Ibra won the scoring title after that goal. It still does not change the fact that the game had no purpose yet Jose did what ever it took to win the game! What we also see hear, is fans, players and a coach celebrating like crazed men after winning a meaningless game!
Fast forward to today... If anyone tells me that this game was meaningless they need to be slapped! We know the circumstances! We knew what was at stake, yet what I saw today was disgusting. It doesn't matter who we fielded, it doesn't matter if we fielded 1 youth player or 11 of them. The fact is none of them played as if they were even remotely interested in winning this game. The only notable performance I saw today was from Cambiasso and Pandev to an extent. All I can remember from the rest was that they were walking all of the damn pitch and got destroyed by a team we dispatched of easily just a few weeks prior. And you know what's worse, I didn't care. In fact, I was actually hoping for Werder to score more and I felt this way against Lazio as well.
Why is that? Is it because I want to see Inter lose so winning could feel oh so good again? Maybe... Or is it because losing is the only way I can see Inter being cured of this disease that has disguised itself as Rafael Benitez. Losing is not a bad thing. Under Mourinho there were times when a shock loss helped get us on our feet again and re-align a train that was definitely about to de-rail. This was able to happen because Jose, realized the flaws in himself (tactically) and implemented changes to fix them. Rafael Benitez has had 23 games this season to realize that his high defensive line is not working and has lead to us conceding more goals so far this season in Europe than we have done in all of last year despite playing 7 less games, yet he has done nothing to change that, in fact, it can even be argued that our center backs are even playing higher up on the pitch.
Jose was arrogant, liked to pick fights, and was an attention whore, but at the same time was never afraid to admit he was wrong even though it meant making a tactical substitution in the 28th minute of a game just to fix a mistake he had made and to teach a player a lesson. Benitez on the other hand has used the exact same system all season long and has masked it with different faces, even though we have an injury depleted squad.. The players look extremely disinterested. Players go forward lose the ball and walk back to defense even though they are supposed to be part of the team's defensive scheme. Going forward we have absolutely no organization and our goals seem to be coming from luck now rather than any kind of build up.
All the while, it's as if no one has even taken a look at the Serie A table which I am scared to look at. It's not even the midway point of the season yet and we are already 10 points behind Milan, and actually closer to the second half of the table than we are to the first. In years prior, it didn't matter who we played with or who we played, the name Inter alone brought fear into opposing players and it would be rare for the to play us without parking the bus in front of goal. There were times when we were unbreakable in defense and conceding a goal was rarity. Even so the reaction from the players after these goals were conceded was instant and a reply could have been expected within minutes. Now we don't only concede we concede a goal we do so in bunches and the players don't even care.
It's true there's only so much a coach can be blamed for, but that does not mean a coach can't be blamed for a lot as well. I've heard some arguments where members here have said they don't want the sacking of Benitez because it would bring us back to the Inter of a decade ago, and I'll reply to them with simply this...
If Inter didn't have last season's trophies to play for now, the only silverware we would have a realistic chance of competing for is the Coppa Italia, which is a cup we would pretty much have celebrated a decade ago.
People, its plain to see, forget about giving this man time, and definitely forget about giving this man our money (his transfer record speaks for itself), this man is not the man to lead this club or even the one to maintain this club. He needs to leave! And until he does so, more and more Interista will join my sentiments and not even care about defeats and may even start celebrating them!
