Palermo - Inter: Match Report
Sorry for not posting any reports in the past few weeks but I have been away on business but came back just in time to watch a rare win for Inter. Hope you enjoy the report :
After two games full of slow play and disappointing draws, Inter finish up the month of January with two wins against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia and Palermo with a 2-0 win tonight in Serie A to move past Udinese into third place.
With two goals by Vieri, Inter put together a solid performance without risk at the back to hold the points. With Veron back in the side, a flow was seen again with good ball movement and more important some creativity coming out of the midfield. It was an element deeply missed in the past two games as Mancini has played with two defensive midfielders. He did so again today but with Veron in the side at least the option for an outlet was always available.
Mancini goes with a 4-4-2 formation as usual with Cambiasso and C. Zanetti in the middle with Veron and Stankovic wide on the wings. Veron was given more of a floating role however and was able to cut inside and play behind Vieri and Martins and provide service.
Its Veron who marks his return to the starting line up right from the start. He took command of all set pieces and on his first free kick sent a screamer that beat the keeper but was just a touch high over the cross bar. His second effort from 30 yards out is another blast that is a line drive towards the net. The Palermo keeper does well to get behind it but it was too powerful to maintain. Vieri is on the door step to take the rebound and heads the ball into the net to make the game 1-0 with only 5 minutes gone.
The early lead seems to stun Palermo and they could only create a few half chances with Inter controlling the ball well and moving it around the pitch with ease. Palermo did come close to a goal from a Grosso free kick but Toldo was alert and made a great save to keep the ball out. The game was fun to watch, mostly since Inter finally looked up for it and did not seem to have the hand brake on like they have had in the last 2 matches.
Both teams defended well and tried to come forward with counter attacks and possession football. With Martins on one end running and putting Palermo on the back foot, Inter looked good to get the second goal but the half ended 1-0 with Inter deserving the lead.
The second half starts with a change for Palermo bringing on Mutarelli for Barone. Once again though its Veron who provides a wonderful free kick that causes a scramble in the box. The ball finds its way to Stankovic who is in the middle of the scramble. With no option to turn he tries the back heel but the ball was cleared off the line to keep it a one goal game.
Inter do get the insurance goal at the 13th minute of the second half and its Veron again who starts the action. After Cambiasso puts in a good tackle to win the ball in the midfield, Veron picks it up and sends a through ball to Stankovic on the left. He runs wide and cuts back the ball to the top of the box where on coming Vieri hits a straight drive into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Palermo tries to react and make two more changes and also move to a 4-4-2 formation. The move cancel both teams out and neither threaten in the late stages. Mancini gives Kily a 20 minute workout to gain some fitness and brings home the 3 points. With the win Inter move past Udinese into third place with 35 points and also remain unbeaten on the season thus far.
a great one, buddy....
I missed your reports...
It happened that few other people also wrote reports, I think they should continue and write their own...
