Inter - Roma: Match Report
Inter return to victory tonight as they beat Roma 2-0 at the San Siro with two goals by Mihajlovic. The win was well deserved by Inter tonight as the midfield won every battle but more so kept the trio of Totti, Montella and Cassano in check even before they reached the defensive lines. Hopefully with a little help tommorow the win can bring Inter closer to Milan and Juve up top.
Inter wins this game with two splendid free kicks by Mihajlovic who scored at the 23rd of the first half and then seals the game with another in injury time. Both free kicks were great spinning and bending shots that found the bottom corner each time.
Inter played very well tonight and with Cambiasso and C. Zanetti in the line up were solid in the midfield and controlled the game, especially after taking the lead. With the help of the ball winners in the midfield the defence was well protected and with Cordoba playing an almost perfect game held all of Roma's threat in check.
Mancini also decided to rest Vieri who played in midweek with Italy and left Stankovic on the bench for a well deserved rest. Kily took his role on the left side and did very well going forward and also tracking back. He may not offer the same flair as Stankovic but his grit was greatly appreciated on the left side.
Adriano and Martins both do well up front although neither of them had any clear cut chances apart from an Adriano header. But merit goes to both of them for keeping Roma on the back foot and holding up the ball well when in possesion to allow the team to move up. Totti and Cassano on the other side do show some flashes of brilliance but C. Zanetti and Cambiasso marking them all over the pitch made life difficult.
In the second half Del Neri decides to bring on Mancini for Dellas to add some counter-attacking options but again Inter controlled the game and also slowed the tempo enough to not allow Roma to get in a groove. By this point in the game the skill of players on both sides was evident, but with many fouls going both ways the game settled into a scrappy match. Many yellow cards were handed out on both sides with Mexes getting a Red Card in injury time as he chops down Martins and gets a second yellow.
The game suited Inter as the midfield was much more hard nosed allowing Mancini to rely on his team to grind out the result and also leave Vieri on the bench for the entire match. Instead he takes off Kily for Stankovic and brings on Ze Maria for Veron and Burdisso for Favalli to give some fresh legs in the back and some offence to bring the second goal.
The move almost pays off as Stankovic and Adriano combine well at the edge of the box playing a one two that breaks Stankovic free on goal from a tight angle. He blasts one from in close but the Roma Keeper held firm at the near post and turned the shot away for a corner.
It must be said that Inter looked solid through out the match and showed a will and a determination right from the start, not just when the pressure was on or late in the game like in past performances. They went hard on every ball and in every area of the pitch all night and it was great to see! Inter do have the potential to go very far and it seems the team is coming together just in time for the Champions League!
Great report Eddy, my modem sucked, that is why I wasnt able to send my appreciation to u
I thought Mancini was gonna insert Vieri when he tool out Kily and Veron...
coz Stan will give more power in the middle, and Ze maria is a more defensive player...
But favally had to go out due to injury..., this prevented us seeing our exciting trident attack... or replacing tired adriano with vieri
