    A Quick Look at 2011/2012

Inter had come into the 2009/2010 season with a magnificent treble and expectations were high for a decent showing for the 2010/2011 season.

The least the fans were expecting was a Scudetto along with the Supercoppa Italian and the European Super Cup along the with a decent attempt at retaining the Champions League.

Rafa Benitez has always been in the shadow of his English Premier League rival Mourinho, and he did not manage to overcome that in Italy. He was even reported to have removed the team picture with Mourinho when they won the Champions League trophy in an attempt to make the players look to the future rather than the past.

Money wasn't spent during the summer, despite Rafa's wishes to add some new signings, but the board were against getting the chequebook out. In the end it was partly the boards fault along with Rafa's tactics that this season has ended on such a low note.

Now that the disappointing 2010/2011 season is nearing the end, Inter director of football Branca has stated the obvious: "The squad needs a freshen-up".

This is what I will talk about in the rest of the article, going through all the major positions.

In the goalkeeping department there will be little change. The 38-year old third string goalkeeper Paolo Orlandoni will be out of contract this summer, and young Italian Enrico Afonso is coming back from his loan stint in Modena, an adequate choice as backup, if the co-ownership issue with Chievo can be settled. Another option would be to give the youngster another loan period again with Chievo's agreement, giving him valuable first team experience, extending the veteran Orlandoni's contract for another year.

In defence, Cordoba and Matrix have a year left on their contracts, and out of respect for their loyaly, the board will probably keep them on. For the benefit of the club however, we should sell them, especially Matrix, as he has shown his inconsistency this season with his mishaps in the Coppa and in the last few games in the league.

The one right move by the Board was done in January, and it was not the Andrea Ranocchia acquiring - that goes without saying- but actually the re-signing of youth product Marco Andreolli but on a co-ownership with Chievo. Along with the others in defence, he will form a quality line of defense for the Inter. Chivu needs to be sold as his form dropped amazingly this season in both central defense and left back.

In the fullback positions, Maicon should almost certainly stay despite having a slow start to the 2010/2011 season. Santon should be brought back and will bring another option in the right and left flank positions.

Yuto is an acquisition that was not needed, but in the event of there being no other quality Left Back available, we thus have no choice. My problem with the Japanese player is that he is at best an average player, who has been rated at 6.5 on goal.com and provided no assists in 17 league games, scoring just once in all competitions. These stats prove his inefficiency in attack. He gave a particularly bad display against Parma which showed his defensive weakness against skilled attackers such as Candreva and Giovinco.

In midfield, Motta needs to be sold and Inter need to seek another DM/CM who can create as we as dictate play. Motta is a simple passer, but not a creator despite his accurate short and long passing skills. Mariga should be kept as he has competent in both defense and offense, he is a poor man's Essien but with a lot of differences obviously of course.

Adding to the midfield would be another central midfielder, but one who also can dictate a pass to assist Sneijder and Coutinho, therefore Kharja -who failed to do so despite an encouraging debut- should be given the boot. The 3rd component to add in midfield is in attacking midfield, notably on the wings, somebody to work with Sneijder and Coutinho. We need at least 2 of them.

Eden Hazard would be perfect, though half of Europe is after the teenage sensation, but still we need to look for another one as well. I just hope we don't go through the Quaresma saga all over again.

In attack, Pandev needs to go. A transfer that since it happened, I was not happy with but content because there were no other options on the table. Pandev is slow, and not a good passer despite being a second striker, creating a simple attacking pass is not his strongest asset despite his good finishing skills.

With Milito, Pazzini and Eto'o and the 18 year-old new signing Luc Castaignos we can be content. The stats for young Castaignos are good, with the teenager scoring 15 goals in 27 games in the current season. The question is how can he fair in the Serie A . It was sad to see Arnautovic leave Inter under Mourinho. Matteo Destro who is co-owned with Genoa can be loaned again, and if he proves himself even more while Luc flops in his first half of the season, then we can try and bring him back again in January.

However, in order to have success in the short term future, the Board will have to get their chequebooks out in the next two months, something they failed to do a year ago. They didn't need much then, now they need a bit more.

I totally disagree on that. Yuto is only 24, he's in the starting eleven of Japan whith which he won the Asian Nations Cup (and was a runnner-up in the Confederations Cup), he has been in Italy for NOT EVEN YEAR and he's proving game-in game-out that he has a huge potential. He needed to adapt quickly first from Japan to Italy and then from Cesena to Inter and his first focus NEEDED to be the DEFENCE seeing that we were taking so many goals in. And he had a bad game? Boohoo, that never happens to anyone else, of course... And you're wrong: he scored twice in Serie A, vs. Genoa and vs. Catania.

I slightly feel optimistic for the coming season. Mourinho said that we have capable people in our ranks, so we should trust and it looks like we are moving quickly. The only doubt is Leonardo, nothing else.

I personally think if we got our defensive superiority back together like in 2009/10 season, we`ll win another treble with no slight problem. good defenders like Terry, Ferdinand, Puyol, Nesta, Samuel and Lucio do not get old when they are in the mid 30s, they actually reach their peak. so next year when our main world class defenders start with no injury problems, I believe we`ll regain the balance in the back. under one condition though, that Cambiasso as well regains his rightful position.

We never had problems in attack, look at the stats, we still are the side with the strongest attack in Italy, as a fact in the last 3 seasons we scored goals more than any other side in Italy. However, it`d be stunning if we managed to get a world class midfielder who can defend and attack as good. in that way we`ll have a slight balanced side who can mantain it`s attacking dominance and retrain it`s defensive superiority.

Motta can stay in the team as a backup, but I cant see him doing as good as the treble season. Cambiasso is our official DM, Sneijder is our main player maker, but we need a third player who has some of that and some of this, who can go both ways (not a bi-sexual though).

More importantly, we dont have to make massive changes, we have a team of champions with a solid structure and shape, all we need is to reinforce the side with the missing pieces.

We can sell Pandev, Motta or/ Mariga and Kharja.

Then we can buy Sanchez for the attacking wing instead of Pandev. as for midfield I `ll not accept someone less than Hamsik or Schweinsteiger or even Essien respectively, we are not a small club, and we didnt spend a shit last year, so seriously this time Moratti should get us a proper solid midfielder that we really need.

If we did these small changes.. I think even with a mediocre coach like Leonardo, we can win yet another big thing.

    Shit doesnt happen

I agree, a renewed defensive vigour combined with one or two quality signings would put us back in the running for another treble.

Statements from the club and Leonardo also seem to indicate they don't want to change the core of the squad.

I wonder though if Moratti really has the will to spend some serious cash on quality players. Things he says in the press makes you think he won't. Like when he said the chance was 4 out of 10 for us getting Sanchez. He's emphasized several times that we won't overpay to get players. But with him you never know so let's hope for the best!

What we need in a principle are 2 new defenders to replace Ivan and Matrix and WINGERS.

But no midfielders? I would take a class midfielder over defenders and wingers any day of the week right now.

Midfield is our main target, and we dont need new defenders, we have enough of them, plus Cafe and Matrix will not retire next season so we'll have Andreolli, Cafe and Matrix as backups, maybe we need a full-back if Maicon is sold..

    Gonna have to disagree.

I think the midfield department needs a rejuvenation.

The forward department on the other hand, is in a dire need of improvement.

    Really?
Eto'o and Pazzini are definatively good enough for the forwards, and they can only be better if we get a quality midfielder behind them other than Sneijder.

If we get someone like tevez or Sanchez this summer it's just gonna lead to another year of our midfield being outclassed even worse than last year in the CL.

Banega + Another Midfielder + Castaignos + Sanchez + 1 more Winged Striker would suffice well.

LOL I am sorry Han, but you are way off here. How the hell can you say that the forward depart is a more dire situation than our midfield department?

Eto'o and Pazzini (including time with Samp) combined for 38 goals in Serie A. Only Udinese had a better strike pair this year and that is because Di Natale is a freak of nature and scores close to 30 goals every season lol.

    Milan: Pato & Robinho - 28
    Inter: Eto'o & Pazzini - 38
    Napoli: Cavani & Lavezzi - 32
    Udinese: Di Natale & Sanchez - 40
    Lazio: Zarate & Floccari - 16
    Roma: Totti & Borriello - 26
    Juventus: Matri & Quagliarella - 29

Eto'o - Pazzini up front is an excellent attack. However, Sneijder-Motta-Zanetti-Cambiasso in midifield is not that awesome when we compare it to the other big clubs around the world...

    Squad depth vito, squad depth.

Pandev excluded, we only have Eto'o, Milito, Castaignos & Pazzini for the 3 forward positions that we used most often.

Whereas in midfield, we have JZ, Motta, Cambiasso, Mariga, Kharja (), Coutinho, Sneijder, Stankovic.

Leo only used a 3 forward system 7/31 matches. If he keeps this same style (4-3-1-2, which he definitely should in Serie A, we will have 4 fowards for 2 positions, which is perfect. 5 including Pandev, which I don't understand why you exclude as of right now?

If you are going to exclude Pandev, then you should exclude Motta too since there are rumors about him as well. But that is besides the point. The point is, for the two positions at forward, we have 2-3 very capable players that are good enough to start for us (3 if Milito regains form). Whereas in midifield we barely have 3 solid players to fill the 4 spots.

Our forward department is not perfect, but to say it needs more improvement than the midfield department is crazy!

The midfield needs the most changes. It's obvious that scoring with forwards isn't the huge issue. Pazzini had a great opening debut in his first game to help us win. The midfield has been ugly at times, even when Cambiasso showed his struggles, it hurt so much.
