New teams this season:
Mersin Idman Yurdu
The build of Turkish Super League is pretty simple, just like most of other leagues teams in last 3 places relegated as 3 teams from Bank Asya 1st Division joins Super League. (Top 2 in 1st division and teams number 3-6 plays play-off to join Super League.)
If 2 teams finishes the league with same points (like this season), the games that has been played between those teams will determine their positions.
Trabzonspor 3-2 Fenerbahce
Fenerbahce 2-0 Trabzonspor
As the results were like this, Fenerbahce claimed the Turkish Super League title 18th time in their history.
I would like to share my short views about teams for the upcoming season. These are my personal thoughts. Let's see how my expectations reflect the reality in the end of season.
Besiktas: (Est. position: 1)
Besiktas was being shown as favorites to win the title last year as they have build one of the strongest squads in their history. However there was something they didn't took into account, squad depth. After a great start in League and Europe, at the start of October their most important player Quaresma injured for 2 months and on the same week plenty of regular first team players injured as well (such as Guti, Sivok, Bobo, Nihat and so on.) And at this bad times Besiktas' rotation players failed to deliver good results, in fact Besiktas couldn't win 7 games in a row which pushed them back and weakened their title chances. (Just like Inter to be honest.) And the addition of Simao, Almeida and Fernandes in Winter Transfer Period was simply not enough.
However, in Summer transfer window Besiktas kept their main squad and bought their 2 loaned players, Fernandes and Ersan Adem Gülüm. And they went for quality players for their rotation in every position such as Bebe, Sidnei, Egemen, Burak Kaplan and Mustafa Pektemek. (You can see them in transfer section below) So with this move Besiktas is -again- being shown as favorites of the title this year.
Fenerbahce: (Est. position: 2)
After a nightmare season start they pretty much surprised everyone and won the title as their 33 years old captain Alex de Souza carried the team very well as he scored 28 goals. They are keeping their main squad as well as some rotation additions just like Besiktas. I can't really say their chances of winning the title this year is much lower than Besiktas if Alex keeps his current form.
Galatasaray: (Est. position: 3)
Galatasaray had the worst season in their 106 years old history as they lost 16 games. Now they will start the new season with whole fresh board, coach and players. Their new president Ünal Aysal looks like he will pay whatever the price to bring success to this team, and it's not hard to see as it's known that Galatasaray is interested in players such as Forlan, Reyes, Cambiasso and Drogba. Galatasaray also brought their old beloved coach Fatih Terim back to duty. As you know Fatih Terim won the UEFA Cup with Galatasaray in 2000 and brought the biggest football success of Turkish history, fans are looking forward to have that old spirit back. As they will not compete in Europe next season, their focus on league will be high, however i don't think they can be shown among the favorites of the league this season, not just yet.
Trabzonspor lost a lot of blood from last year as most of their first squad players left the team. Their brain Selcuk Inan (MC) signed Galatasaray, Egemen Kokrmaz (DC) signed Besiktas and their Striker Umut Bulut has already left among with plenty others. They will be still competetive as they hold their well-experienced coach Senol Günes and their key player Burak Yilmaz, but i can't see them reaching the success of last year again under this circumstances.
Estimated position: 5
Bursaspor surprised everyone with their historical title win in 2010, but then the downfall started. They are simply going worse and worse, losing their top players, signing questionable replacements and they are also having trouble outside of the pitch as their president Ibrahim Yazici is under arrest because of swindling.
Estimated position: 6 or below.
Gaziantepspor is the team capable of being new "Bursaspor of 2010" this year. They have a great board doing right things, great manager and great players which they don't even negotiate to sell. I expect them to show a great performance this year and become one of Turkey's competetive teams.
Estimated position: 4.
Eskisehirspor, Kayserispor and Istanbul Büyüksehir Bld. are among the teams that capable of pushing for Europa League spot this season.
Teams that get 5 League Titlese has the privilege of carrying a "star" above their team crests. Currently Fenerbahce and Galatasaray carries 3 stars whle Besiktas does 2 and Trabzonspor 1.
Here you can check the League Title numbers and years:
Fenerbahce is most successful team in the league while Galatasaray has the most cups. And Besiktas is the only team to win the league without losing a game. (in 91/92 season)
Turkish Cup History:
Here you can see how many times teams won the Turkish Cup:
Galatasaray - 14 (1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1973, 1976, 1982, 1985, 1991, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2005)
Besiktas - 9 (1975, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011)
Trabzonspor - 8 (1977, 1978, 1984, 1992, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2010)
Fenerbahce - 4 (1968, 1974, 1979, 1983)
Fenerbahce fans are being mocked because of their Turkish Cup failure, mostly by Besiktas fans. They couldn't win the Cup for 29 years, they reached the final 4 times in last 6 years but lost all, 2 of them were against Besiktas.
I will post Summer Transfer Window updates as soon as possible.
