3-4-3, Moratti, Branca, and a Pazzomistic rant

Coach number 3 since The Special One to struggle with our treble winning squad, Moratti and Branca get defended to death, even after they weakened the squad for a second time in a row, and the coach is once again blamed and is deemed an idiot.. What's new? Ohh!! We have a formation to blame for our short comings! Am I too believe that an experienced team of World Champions, can only play well in ONE formation and under ONE tactic? Is it really FTRMTITBaootw?! (Fuck The Rest Mourinho's Tactic Is The Best and only one that works)

The problem is definitely the coach, forget the lack of sufficient investment, combined with astronomically high expectations.. WE ARE MOTHAFUCKIN' WORLD CHAMPIONS AFTER ALL!!!!!!!ONE!!111!!!ELEVEN!!! <--- Hmmm that sounds familiar does it not? Ohh yeah Berlusconi.. The parallels between us now and Milan then are glaring some of us in the face... Yet, some of you here are so deluded and actually believe that our current squad can compete for the Scudetto, because we still have some of the treble winners remaining... And now, because of that delusion, some of you have interpreted the loss versus Palermo as us being a good -- no GREAT! team, that is just being coached wrongly.. Bielsa rejected us for Bilbao, Mourinho ran far and fast after we won, same goes for Leonardo...

It's okay though, Moratti and Co. are preparing for the FFP! Forget about having a good team, forget about building on anything that Jose created, let's jsut buy tons and tons of players and to make up for that let's sell our best players.. Sneijder's next btw, guys.. I can't wait to be ready for the FFP! Fuck actually being good enough to compete with the best, as long as we're there right? We all enjoyed Inter 2 -5 Schalke at the Meazza right? And in Serie A, let's ignore the fact that we're hypocrites for mocking Milan for being a team of old men a few years ago even though we played a match with a defense which had an average age of 35 years old (and our back up defenders are only a few years younger, save Mr. Froggley)..

Was Carlo Ancelotti, who led Milan to 2 Champions Leagues, and 3 finals, and idiot when he led Milan to a 5th place finish? It was clear that his team was just too old and just not good enough, but what did Galliani and Berlusconi do? What did they say? WE ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!ONE!!!11!!.. You would think with this happening so soon, that our management would know better, you would think that after seeing how Barcelona or Manchester United, acted after winning Eruope's most illustrious trophy that our management would know better, you would think that it would be common sense, to know what to do after winning a UCL, but apparently, Moratti lost his Copy of Uefa Champions League Winning For Dummies, when he collected that medal on May 22nd, 2010..

And now the fans, well the ones I interact with, you guys have taken an ultimate black and white stance.. If one speaks ill of Moratti, no matter how objectively, they are immediately labelled an ungrateful, gloryhunter. There is no question that Moratti loves this club, and has given his entire life to it, but I'm still in shock at how in less than one-fifth of a decade that he was able to bring a major Italian football club to annual loses of more than the entire budget of about a quarter of the world's countries.. But here's the part which blows my fucking mind!

We don't even owe a dime, or even a penny of debt! Jose once asked and answered, "what is the difference between a dream and an obsession? A dream is more pure than an obsession." Well, Moratti's quest for the Champions League, certainly was not a dream, it was a bloody obsession that has pretty much run this club down to the ground long term, in exchange for short term gratification, and that ends in under 100 days, when we relinquish our title as world champions.

    AND THEN WHAT?!

Where do we go from there? We are led to believe that we have a plethora of talented youth, yet they get destroyed 7-1 by Tottenham in the Next Gen Series.. Year after year we insist on purchasing over the hill players -- that just won't depart us when we need them to (that includes Diego Forlan who will be in his mid-30s costing us a net 8 million euros a season when his contract ends), paying them disgustingly high wages, and playing them over our young fresh players who seem promising but are never even given a chance to show that. Obi is skilled in playing in the middle of the pitch, yet we continue to show insistence on first Kharja and now Kucka.. Santon is gone ... Castagios will never see action, until an injury crisis hits, same goes for Fararoni who showed extreme promise in the pre-season. I want to believe that our management knows what it's doing but its hard.. from the sale of Eto'o at that price to the bid for Palacio to the snubbing of Vidal, to the mismanagement of the clubs finances..

There is so much wrong with this team right now, and I fear our immediate and long term future, unless some drastic changes are made! What's for certain though, is that the second installment of Le Grande Inter is over, and by the looks of things, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes another 4 decades for it to come again.. Until it reaches though, I hope you all will continue join me in singing...

Good read Nyall. The inevitable looked like it would come, with this old squad, being past their primes.

Looking at Moratti's track record, he's made a lot of good decisions that have led to great results for us. Like hiring Mou.. the transfer decisions that led to the CL-winning team, etc. And he's made a lot of bad decisions that have led to disastrous results. Like buying over-priced crappy players, constantly changing coaches in the 90's etc. Hiring Rafa. Maybe right now he's making bad decisions again. Fuck, I dont know.

I think that at the end of the day, as fans, all we can really do is support the club. Regardless of circumstances.

Our winning cycle ended when Mourinho left. But be assured.. another La Grande Inter will come. I don't know when. But I do know I'll still be an Interista when that time comes.

Great post mate...I was wondering who you would like to replace Gasp if he does get sacked. I fear that there will be few coaches interested in the Inter job when as you said, Bielsa rejected the job.

]It's stupidly funny how you try to make Inter look bad in almost every post of yours.
We just lost to Trabon.. whatever the fuck they're called.. Aren't we?!

As Moratti said, the negotiations with Bielsa stoppe because of family problems, not because he rejected us.
Family problems, cause him to reject World Champions, only to join Athletic Bilbao... hmmmm

And who gives a flying fuck about NextGenSeries, seriously?
I did, because I was merely curios about finally watching this "project" that is about a decade in the making, started by Facchetti himself..

And no one is making us to believe we have great talented youngsters, we do have youngsters with great potential, as you can see them every day, whenever they get a chance.
They hardly do, so sometimes I forget.. Instead I see the likes of KHARJA and PANDEV.. and forget about Coutinho and Obi..

We are slowly rebuilding our club, and no one can call us Milan 2007, 2008 or whatever, because they still have the oldest team in CL, and obviously in Serie A.
    Surely that can't be true..

We have lot of young players, and only time will tell if they're good enough or not. But it's useless anyway, you don't take anyone's opinion as an option or reality.
Forgive me.. I can't do any better especially when all I hear is fantasy talk, riddled with ifs, buts, maybes..

I couldn't be bothered to be honest.. For the pattern, will probably just continue.. Jose is the only thing that MAY make us any better, he's that special. I'd rather see us, get defenders and midfielders first and then get a new coach..

Mismanagement is the only thing wrong with our club...

3/3 managers decided not to build on what was proven to work but went the other way.Instead of playing football which allows our players to show their strengths, our tactics have been built so they expose their weaknesses. If any of them decided to adapt to the team instead of adapting the team to themselves,we wouldn't be having this discussion right now.Until we see one manager trying it and failing, that argument is valid.

Gasperini for instance is a small team manager and you can tell that by his actions so far.Our biggest player, the engine of our team, our star playmaker is no longer one.Instead of allowing him to play to his strength Gasperini decided to expose his weakness by adapting him to his small team tactics.Sneijder is now a winger...He is not fast,he can't beat his opponent on a regular basis and he plays absolutely in the same manner as he would if he was a TQ only now he is limited in the positional sense. He's being wasted...

Cambiasso is another example of how all 3 managers have brutally disregarded our players strengths.Cambiasso thrives sitting deep in front of the defense, with his flawless positioning and one of the best standing tackles in the world.Wins the ball, distributes is to a more creative player...That's what he used to do,and he was world class doing it.But now he's a box to box midfielder...What they are making him do is something you would expect of players like Vidal or Boateng, not Cambiasso. But Gasperini decided to take it one step further.Gasperini wanted to play possession football...With a 3-4-3.What's wrong with that?3-4-3 has just two classic midfieders...And in our case, one of them is Cambiasso.Put Xavi next to him and we couldn't keep possession.Cambiasso is no longer there to protect the back 4,which is a big part of our defensive problems.

Leonardo was ironically the one who realized this, unfortunately he just wasn't good enough to take it one step further. He wasn't consistent with it either...His experience at Milan where Pirlo used to play behind Ambrosini was brought to Inter, where he made Motta play behind Cambiasso which was a mistake...But the formation suited out players and we were winning again. We were still trying to play somewhat offensive football, but the diamond form prevented us from being so exposed as before. We lacked ideas upfront, hence the Eto'o over reliance.Leonardo was a good manager to keep us afloat, but he was not the one to lead a team to greatness.Without Eto'o now his lack of experience and imagination would be very exposed. He is also a big match flop manager...Bayern win was a fluke,we should have lost the second game with at least 2 goals difference.

We need rigid football,a compact team which maintains shape and protects space.Instead we have an attempt of fluid football,a team scattered all around the pitch in a rorschach manner attacking the ball wherever it is.One manager who fits the description would solve all our problems. It's too late for this squad to win trebles now,but we should have walked the league last year and this one.If Leonardo got us 2 or 3 points behind Milan at one point and almost the CL semis(we should have realistically gone through ) imagine what would have happened if there was a manager who would build on what Mou left behind. The squad was a finished product....Mismanagement.

I think the problem with our style is more with the mentality than the quality of players or the coach. For years, we have played defensive, and laborious football. A decade back, Cuper instilled the Catenaccio system which got us good results but never the trophies. This along with the long trophyless years kept piling on the pressure on our squad. This pressure was always bearing down on our players, the coach, the president and everyone associated with the club. As a result, we were too afraid to do something drastic or to try out new ideas. This led to the sacrifice of flair and technical players in the midfield like Seedorf, Pirlo and lack of patience with many others.

From Cuper, we moved to Zac who failed trying to bring an attacking mentality. Mancio then came and provided some attacking football early on. But our players had defence and hardwork ingrained in them. Playing expansive football was totally not in tune with their mentality. Mancio realized this and then switched to a 4312 with possibly the most defensive midfield and playmaker combination ever. While we won Scudetto with this, the mentality of the players didn't change. We still approached every game with a reactionary and defensive outlook. No matter the opposition, Inter always set out to counter the game played by the opposition instead of imposing our style on them. Of course, we didn't have a style to impose on the opposition. This had the biggest impact on our midfield of Deki-Cuchu-Zanetti which could never control any game but rather always try to stop the opposition.

Mourinho tried to impose a 433 style. The primary reasons for its failure were not because of poor wingers, but because it was much against the mentality of our established players. Given the pressure of winning, he couldn't try to change that but instead smartyly focussed on the tried and tested approach and got results with that. With Sneijder, Milito and Eto'o as catalysts, we won the CL; but our core DNA still remained defensive and hardworking. In any of the games that season we didn't control the play but preyed on opposition's weaknesses.

Now with having won all of this and getting the monkey off the back, our club wants to be considered as a big club. It wants us to impose ourselves and have a more free flowing game. We are looking at coaches that can make us play better. Rafa, Leo and now Gasp are all trying the same. The problem is not the formation; but the fact that our core DNA doesn't allow us to do that. A midfield that has Cambiasso at the core will can not control the tempo of the game. The presence of Zanetti alongside him only adds to the worry. Whatever formation we use, either we give the coach enough time to change the mentality to a more attacking one; or move to a defensve style of play that may not guarantee trophies but at least provide stable results.

That's exactly the point rockball. But I think in order to implement a more free-flowing, attacking style of play, the core of our squad would have to change. With Cuchu, Capitano, Motta, Deki etc, the new approach is never going to work. As you pointed out, they are just too used to a certain type of playstyle. I don't think they can adapt.

So we would need a whole new midfield. Sneijder being the only remnant. And then we would need a Xaxi-esque player to set out the lines. And one other, technically gifted midfielder (maybe Ricky). Then a DM who can also keep up with the passing ability of the other players. But I dont see all of this happening in the near future.

Cambiasso is not the problem. Who plays next to him and how they play is. Cambiasso as a DM is what EVERY TEAM NEEDS. But we keep trying to turn him into a CM. Even in the CL on Wednesday, apart from the goal, Cuchu was very good.(He was piss poor on the goal though no 2 ways about it). What we cant really solve is J.Z. playing next to him. Say if we had an attacking CM on both his sides who could balance out their movement and work a deal with the full backs(so theres enough defensive players should we get countered on), we would actually be able to play attacking football.

I dont like attacking football, thats for another post. But we need to utilize our players in their best possible positions to play at our best, its that simple. Then we have to hope that they turn up mentally not like what happened on Wednesday night. The problem is all summer we didnt try this 4 at the back and then a week into the season we have played it straight away after a loss where our confidence took a hit.

Everything a man should be. We miss you Cipe.
