Nobody knows how good they really are or if they are overrated or not because they haven't played a really strong opponent recently and all their hype is based on games against weak ones, only Colombia was a stronger one which did result in a 0-2 loss, but that was just a friendly. This also won't be a top opponent but it's on the WC so it'll be a good test anyhow. I hope they will turn out great, however. Not just because they are my neighbours and the only ones I'd like to win the WC next to us, but also because of my bets and because of KevinB's health. I'm just a little skeptical, though I have a feeling that tonight they will show that my skepticism is unnecessary.

As a SQUAD, on paper, they are one excellent young team, one of the best out there. On the pitch they haven't shown that yet. We will see how it goes in this WC.

The thing that I think will harm Belgium is the lack of a midfield controller. The same as Argentina. No Pirlo/Xavi/Lahm/Kroos etc..., not even a Gerrard.

Everything else seems good. Looking forward to Mertens and Hazard.

Witsel? He's no Xavi, but his passing's not bad.

I think their bigger problem is the lack of full-backs.

Will Mertens start tho?

And yeah, I do agree. But they do have some nice passers in the team. De Bruyn maybe, as CM? Or Witsel. With THAT team, i'd play 4-3-3/4-2-3-1. IMO they mostly lack good fullbacks. I see them like Germany yesterday, playing with 4 CBs.

What I'd do:

Courtois
Alderweireld - Kompany - Vertonghen - Vermaelen
Witsel - Dembele
Mertens - De Bruyn - Hazard
Lukaku

Edit: And from the bench there is Januzaj, Mirallas, Chadli in the attack, Defour and Fellaini in the midfield. That's, on paper, one hell of a team.

The teams good but its not as good as ppl are making out. I think a lot of it has to do with a lot of them players playing in the Epl tbh. And I dont rate that deffence at all, kompany is average imo.

Yeah, we know that everyone playing in EPL is overrated and that Kompany, Hazard, Vertonghen, Dembele, Lukaku, are all average. :D

Well yeah. Apart from hazzard none of them are anything that special. And dont go telling me that kompany is this amazing defender because he really, really isn't.

No, Kompany had a bad season...and he still won it with City.

I'd like almost the whole Belgium first team to play for Inter. Yes, Hazard is exceptional, but that doesn't mean others ain't good players. They definately struck gold with this generation as far talent goes.

Fellaini can stay at Man U though xD

I'd definitely take the rest of their team

Was looking at some transfer rumours on Goal, saw Origi being linked to Liverpool and went on to his Wikipedia page to see this.

Not sure how good Belgian RB is, just saying Ritichie De Laet is a very decent option. Tireless runner who runs up and down the wings all day, good physical attributes and a decent player.

Only Clyne has won more tackles than him among RBs and Rangel with more interceptions than him.

Belgian National Team

Due to my own country's incompetence, I needed to adopt a country for the upcoming World Cup. After eliminating the countries I could never bare to root for (Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Spain) and the countries that don't have a prayer (Sweden, all of Asia, all of North America, all of Africa), I have settled on Les Diables Rouges (do people actually call them that?) Unfortunately they have a manager who has proven himself to be incompetent in Roberto Martinez, but they also have a bevvy of talented players like Hazard, Dembele, Vertonghen, and Lukaku.

Thus, this thread will be for KevinB and myself to discuss our Belgian nationals.

Possible starting eleven in the World Cup:

Courtois
Meunier Kompany Alderweireld Vertonghen
Fellaini Dembele
De Bruyne
Mertens Lukaku Hazard

Martinez has a beef with Nainggolan, apparently, so it's unknown if he's even going to make the team from the sound of things.

I think Nainggolan's defensive prowess is a little overrated. The best years of his career were when he was deployed as almost solely an attacking option. So, under that logic, if Martinez wants a defensive presence in the midfield, maybe he considers Fellaini the best option? idk

I think ADRossi is right. Naingollan isn’t a DM. Fellaini isn’t a great one but that’s basically how he’s been used at United for the last few years. Witsel was their perferred DM for a while but now he’s fucked off to China and probably lost form
