Repost from herehttp://inter1908blog.com/bonazzoli-sold-sampdoria/

It’s official – we’ve just sold Bonazzoli to Sampdoria. I wanted to make a post on this covering my opinion and analysis of the situation.

Federico Bonazzoli

In many ways, it is in keeping with what I have discussed previously – here – but in other ways, it is a shock to the system.

So, what exactly has happened?

We’ve sold Bonazzoli for – by all accounts – 4.5million euros to Sampdoria outright. We retain the right to re-sign him for 9 million euros at any point in the next 3 seasons, and up to 50% of any future fees he incurs when he leaves Sampdoria to a third party club.

At face value, this looks pretty good. We’re doing something very similar to what we’ve done with Duncan, Crisetig, etc. On the other hand, is it exactly the same? Bonazzoli is only 17 – 18 when he makes the actual transition to Sampdoria. In 3 years time – which is, to the best of our knowledge, the last time we will retain an option on him – he’s only 21. We’re gambling on him having made it or failed to make it by aged 21.

I recently posted on Forza Inter Forums about my worst case scenario for Bonazzoli. It involves him developing at a reasonable, but not spectacular, pace. His final and third season at Sampdoria would involve maybe a dozen goals, but not a bona fide starter.

Imagine, at this point, a Juventus bid for him for 15 million euros. We would have the option to sign him for, say, 9 (speculation, a lot of details remain murky). What would happen here? We would stand to profit 7.5 million euros from his sale to Juventus, or splash 9 million on bringing him home. That’s a difference of 16.5 million euros to the club – in one nice big lump sum which would significantly help with FFP as well.

I’m worried about THAT situation. We could easily lose the rights to this player because he isn’t ‘quite’ good enough to definitely justify spending the money on bringing him back, but having our hand forced by another club.

This deal has a lot of pros and cons, and it could be worse, but at the same time, there is a lot of risk with this.

One question we have to ask is whether giving up a player with as much potential as Bonazzoli was worth the meagre 5 million euros or so we have received for him. I would have preferred using the other model we employ – loan for two years, right to purchase, with counter-option – prices fixed at 5m and 7.5m (or similar). It might not be functionally that different, but one of the most important things with a player is retaining their rights – and that is something we no longer have with Federico Bonazzoli.

Time will tell, and it’s certainly not guaranteed doom and gloom, but I’m a little worried about the potential knock on affects here.

As I mentioned in his thread, my concern is that he becomes settled at Sampdoria and then doesn't want to return. With a loan, he would know he was coming back and would be mentally prepared to do so. Although, after today's events, it doesn't seem like the management care much about having players who want to play for us.

ah I forgot to reply to that.

I dunno. It sort of depends. A lot, just on the player.

It depends what the management have said to him, how they're dealing with him as a player, and what he feels like.

If he feels like shit, then yeah, it's unlikely we'd get him back. If, on the other hand, we're dealing with this well from a man management perspective, it could really fire him up.

Never know.

I still have hopes that we'll see Bona and Puscas as starters for our first team. :datass:

This is a good point. Roma signed Jedvaj who is a mega talent and had him sitting on their bench for 6 months, eventually they loaned him out to Bayer who gave him regular football and then he wasn't interested in coming back. And why would he - Roma had him sitting on the bench every game, where Bayer actually developed him.

Inter will still be able, in the next few years at least, to offer bigger salary and the bigger stage so to speak.

Come summer there's a very good chance that Icardi will be the only striker in the squad if Palacio leaves and Podolski isn't signed. I feel like if there was ever a time to give him the trust he needed it was now. He's only 17, when he turns 20 and there would still be teams interested in loaning him if his development goes even average.

They paid 4,5mil and Inter can buy him back for 9, which means he alone will cost 4,5mil in the end, which will be the price of his development.

Now, whether he'll want to come back is another story and will Inter be able to pay higher wages than Samp if he doesn't? I guess so. The management ARE doing good things at Inter, mainly, just occasionally take few steps back, meaning everything will take longer.

Honestly It is a good move IMO he wont have the pressure of a failing Inter on his shoulders he will go to samp who we have a great relationship with and they will play him more than we would in the mean time puscas looks great for us its up to him to prove he is worth all the hype he has had in serie a

I think the most worrying issue is his age. He'll be 18 at Sampdoria. That's far too young for a Serie A loan, however talented he may be. With Muriel, Eder, Eto'o, I don't see enough space for Bonazzoli to get the playing time that he desperately needs at this stage in his development. There's too much risk in this deal. If we had loaned out Balotelli after his first season at Inter (aged 18) to a Genoa or Sampdoria, I think he would have barely got any playing time and he would definitely not have scored the 10 goals he made that season, for example.

As always, we often throw our youth players at first division teams that inquire even if it isn't the best thing for them. Longo to espanyol, Bessa to olhanense/evian, caldirola to twente, bianchetti to verona etc. I think it's very presumptuous to say the worst case scenario is Bonazzoli breaking through aged 20 like Destro at Siena, or that the scariest part of this deal is the possibility of Juventus coming into the picture. The worst case scenario is that he doesn't play, Sampdoria loans him out, and he doesn't fulfill his potential, period. I also think the three year first option is ridiculous (expecting he will "prove" himself by the time he's 21).

Bonazzoli is only a teenager after all.

Personally, I think there's more pressure for him at Sampdoria. Here, he's just a youth player. There, not so much. The high expectations and responsibility of being a full member of the first team in a first division club like Sampdoria can be too high for an 18 year old kid with less than a year of professional experience who has been transferred in a multi-million euro deal. There's also the pressure of winning a starting berth over Muriel, Eto'o, and Eder.

Well I mean if he has a poor game for Inter our fans will boo the shit out of where as if he has a poor game for samp they wont be as demanding seeing as they are actually used to developing talent.

That's when you'll see another benefit of that "50% of transfer fee" clause. If at that time we don't want to let him go to Rube and decide to take him back, we can easily make higher offer than theirs. For example, Rube want Bona for 20M, then Samp will receive only 10M. So we just have to give them 11-12M to win the bid. It's like a lifetime buyback clause :trolldad: The problem is whether Bona want to come back to us or not.

My worst case scenario is from a decision making perspective. If he doesn't fulfil his potential than the decision from our perspective is absolutely trivial. Similarly if he does fulfil it. Its where it is somewhere in between that it gets hard.
