Okay, now you are grasping at straws really. Go look up what Nesta and Miha won together, and then go check what Vidic and Rio won together.

Actually, go look up what all of those pairs won and compare. Mind you, I'm not biased about Vidic at all, he continuously underperformed for our NT. But some of this is just laughable.

Or you could look further up and show me how you're disagreeing with the notion that club football was not at its lowest during that period.

Lazio won a Scudetto with those two, something that was unthinkable actually despite having a strong team, because they were not considered better than Roma, Inter, Milan or Juventus at the time but just a slightly better version of Fiorentina. And Serie A was far a better league back then than the PL that Vidic and Ferdinand played in together. Same goes for European football overall.

Diego Godin felt Atletico Madrid put in “a complete performance, effective both in defence and attack” to beat Juventus 2-0.

The centre-back scored the second goal at the Wanda Metropolitano in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16.

“We’re very happy, it was a great game,” Godin told UEFA.com.

“It was a complete performance, effective both in defence and attack, as we all had the right attitude. We created so many clear-cut chances, including two when we were one-on-one with the goalkeeper, had a goal disallowed via VAR, another hit the bar.

“We scored the two goals for an important victory that can allow us to go into the very tough second 90 minutes with a 2-0 advantage.”

Keep up the good work Diego!

I don't think Lucio was a barter player than Vidić. I'd probably put Vidic a bit ahead on their best day even though it's pretty close. Lucio has many lapses in concentration and was always the inferior defender to Samuel.

I don't even remember Materazzi and Samuel being a great duo, did they even have one season of being starters together? Samuel was on the bench a lot in 06/07 and pretty much injured most of 07/08. I remember Cordoba playing a lot so I hardly think you can compare a Materazzi/Samuel duo as some world class pairing.

As far as I see it, Materazzi was never world class while Vidić definitely was. Materazzi was more of Bonucci type level, good enough for a big club, but not as a starter of a CL winning team.

All love in the world for Materazzi but besides that World Cup year he was extremely unintelligent player. Both him and Córdoba used to be too aggressive, committing stupid fouls in dangerous area etc.

I have to give them credit because they played in pre Calciopoli era and it was 2 times more difficult to be Inter defender in that period.

Wait people here actually under rate Vidic in his prime. This must be the only place on the internet where the opinion of the premier league is so obviously bias in the other direction

The bias direction is as annoying as premface who claims EPL is the best at everything. I have no idea how people rate Vidic that low. Ferdinand-Vidic in their prime acted as a foundation for MU to enter UCL final 3 times and they dominate EPL when the league produced very strong performance in the continental competition. Ferdinand was better with ball, but Vidic was a classic defender and he stood as an absolute rock in defence (except when he faced Torres).

Agreed with some of the names, but :

Nesta-Stam (Milan)
Samuel-Lucio (Inter)
Samuel-Chivu (Roma) : Too brief to be assessed and zero title.
Ayala-Pellegrino (Valencia) : Agreed with Ayala, but not with Pellegrino. Ferdinand-Vidic were still better.
Thuram-Cannavaro (Juventus)
Chiellini-Bonucci(+Barzagli) (Juventus)
Godin-Gimenez (Atletico) : Disagreed particularly with Gimenez.
Sergio Ramos-Varane (Real Madrid)
Puyol-Marquez (Barcelona) : Marquez was good player, but Ferdinand-Vidic were sturdier individually or collectively.
Carvalho-Terry (Chelsea)
Nesta-Maldini (Milan)
Puyol-Pique (Barcelona) : Slightly disagree with this as young Pique was not that good at defence and Barca were offensively too good, but Puyol was the beast and they won so many titles though.
Lucio-Nowotny (Leverkusen) : Too brief to be assessed and zero title.
Nesta-Mihaljovic (Lazio) : Perhaps the most laughable one. Miha was never recognized as the best defender around.
Samuel-Materazzi (Inter) : Materazzi was never the best defender either.
Godin-Miranda (Atletico)

Feridnand and vidic the best cb duo ever??????? Wtf am I hearing. Feridnand was shit and vidic was so really overrated. They were seen as strong because of the team and style of man utd back in the day. Put them both in any another team and watch them get exposed.

Who else if not the wicked wizard himself to appear when EPL fanboys are on the loose and we most need him to restore order.

Really hate these arguments, Cannavaro and Samuel got exposed in Madrid, so what.

If the setup of the team made them the defenders they were, then it's because the game itself is a team sport.

Watch Samuel and Lucio under Benitez and Gasperini.

Well it's hard to say, because football games have so many uncontrolled variables.

The proper scientific methodology in finding out which pair of CB is better is by containing them in the same constant set of environmental variables around them. But this is nearly impossible to achieve other than simulation - i.e. football manager.

It could simply be that Nesta and Cannavaro were so strong simply because they had Gattuso in front of them, a Buffon behind them and a pair of solid full backs help defending inwards attack from out wide.

Ferdinand and Vidic have a different set of players surrounding them, so naturally their defensive record is incomparable.

It's a meaningless comparison.

I hope he stays at Athletico.

We really don’t need to spend money on CBs unless we sell one of our starters

He's coming for free... Wages, it's going to be 2.5M for someone like Ranocchia or 4M for someone like Godin. I know what I'd choose.

It is funny how we complain about losing Zaniolo but occupy every possible slot for another top prospect like Bastoni though ...
