“He Turned Down Arsenal & Cagliari To Sign For Inter” - Martin Satriano’s agent

CdS: Uruguayan’s form in pre-season has given the Nerazzurri something to think about. Satriano is under contract with Inter until the summer of 2024, and he has impressed last season with the Primavera side under Armando Madonna.

This form has continued into pre-season training with the first team, where he has caught the eye of manager Simone Inzaghi and scored five goals against Sarnico in a friendly, before getting on the scoresheet once more in a friendly against Lugano. At any rate the Uruguayan will remain with the first team until August, and then his future will become clearer.

> He looks promising but needs to develop and find playing time, to catch up on his development. Selling him with buy-back clause seems the best option for the moment. Club plans to get Keita instead of Pinamonti, as he is more experienced and can be impact sub.

Im not so sure that is true. I think even Serie C level for a 17-19 year old can be beneficial. The important thing is that they’re actually playing. Guys like D’Ambrosio, Di Lorenzo, Insinge, Sensi, etc. were all playing at that level at that age.

I think you could make an argument that for some players that lower level is actually better for their development because they can play with more freedom and less pressure.
That's fair. I think for the vast majority of players, (I'd need to check), you get like a season max at that sort of level - checking a number of people in the England squad, for example, most of them have 1 season on loan in the Championship but otherwise full time Prem players.

Development is personalised, but probabilities tell a story. Satriano needs to have an amazing season this year if he wants to be a top flight footballer IMHO.

What I would say about pressure is that if you cant handle the pressure, you're very unlikely to make it already :D If you read interviews, etc,one thing about top players that is quite consistent is how they look mature beyond their years as a kid (not in a Manolas way), and how they rise against pressure rather than struggle.

What is pressure? Surely a player like Dalbert did better than 99% of all footballers in the world and managed to make a career as he got to France and even made a move to Inter. At Inter he failed with the pressure of Giuseppe Meazza. So there are all kinds of pressure.

When it comes to B team, the point of that is to get kids to play against men, not against other kids. Even Serie C at under 18 would be very good for our kids.

so it depends what you define as success, but if you want players capable of performing at the level of a club like Inter, then at just a quick pass from our team of starters+quality bench:

Handanovic Serie B 1 season, the rest Serie A except aged 18/19 (Slovenia 2nd league for 11 games)
De Vrij top flight football since he was aged 17
Ranocchia 1 season of Serie C aged 19, 1 season of Serie B after, A the rest

Dalbert is a bit of an anomaly - 1 season of 2nd league in Brazil aged 21, but then moved to top flight after.
Di Marco - 1 season (12 games) in Serie B, aged 18/19 I think
Dambro 1 full first team season at Serie C level, B for 3 of years after, then A.
Darmian - A/B his entire career. 2 seasons total of Serie B, aged 20 and 21/22
Skriniar - top flight since he was 17
Bastoni - top flight since 17
Gagliardini - Serie B till 22, but I'd argue if he deserves to be on this list :D
Vecino - top flight since a kid
Sensi - Lega Pro until 19, one season of B, then A. But basically always as a starter.
Perisic - top flight since 19
Hakan - top flight since 19
Barella - 1 season of Serie B aged 18, the rest Serie A
Eriksen - top flight since 17, as a starter
Nainggolan had 1.5 seasons of Serie B as a starter until aged 19 I think, then Serie A ever since
Brozovic - Croatian first league since he was 18/19
Lukaku - top flight since 16
Lautaro - top flight since 18
Sanchez - top flight since 17

pretty much by virute of even playing at Serie C level, the probability of you 'making it' is VERY low. And that's as a regular starter. If you do play in the lower leagues, you get like 1 maybe 2 seasons at best (statistically) to assert your quality and move to the top flight - even Verratti had 2 seasons of Serie B (aged 18 and 19) before moving to a big club.

Like I said, a few things:
1 - Most pros will never ply lower league football
2 - If you arent a regular starter by the time you're 19/20 in the top flight, you're very unlikely to make it at a top level
3 - If you aren't in the first team squad aged 18, you're unlikely to make it

That's why B teams are a waste. Because, by that age, the probability of making it vs not making it is ~95% decided anyway. And thats why our youth transfer strategies never work out. We sign all these 18 year olds, they never go anywhere. Because its too late in their development cycles.

If I look t the 22 who staarted in the CL final
Ederson top flight except for an adaptation 4 matches in Benfica B
Walker - 2 seasons on loan in the championship (as a starter,) then first team regular aged 21/22
Stones - one breakthrough season in the championship aged 18, then Everton
Dias - Benfica B for 2 seasons until age 20, then top flight ever since (Benfica B were 2nd league)
Zinchenko, top flight
Bernado Silva - breakthrough season was aged 19

I'm gonna stop here but think you get the point. (couldnt be fucked clicking through everyone else tbh :D)

It's unfortunate, but the stats dont lie. Inter needs to cut harder. If we had a B team, I would allow one development season for the kids at that level, and if they dont display A/B level qualities, they dont make the cut. You'll inevitably lose a couple of gems (But very rare), but it gets us away from the disaster of a youth sector we have now where we dont produce jack shit.

Notice all of our stars have been first team, top flight regulars since they were aged 17/18 basically.

It’s an interesting thesis. I would say what I take away from that is by 18/19 you better at least be playing against adults regularly. Obviously the bigger talent you are the bigger the chances you are put directly into top flight football from a young age. So I wonder how much is really nature vs nurture. Some “wonderkids” are just destined as long as injuries or attitude doesn’t stop them.

I will say when you look at some of our under performers and look at where they were in those formative years there does seem to be a correlation.

The point was that we would have a team in Serie C level. Now young kids aren't getting Serie C experience because it doesn't serve the purpose to send them there. They might not get enough playing time there at the young age. Sometimes even in Serie B they are not getting enough playing time.

But in Inter's Serie C team they would get that playing time every week. So we don't have a comparison to make because these guys had different reality back then when they were young kids.

Yeah, and I think the key thing is you need to be *good enough to play against adults*, rather than trying to artificially force it with a B team IMHO.

I'm not agains a B team, butt if we're playing Serie C level football, it should basically be 17/18 maybe 19 year olds. 18/19/20 they need to be on loan to a B or A club, and by 21 they should be a regular starter in a low/mid level A side. IMHO.

I've ried a few imes but havent been able to find the article about the City scouting on thte CL quarter finals. Like I said, it was something like 75% of players were top flight first team regulars aged 17/18.

And thats kind of the thing for me - I agree it sucks our guys dont get regular minutes at the Serie B level, and for sure we need to be better about allocating the clubs they go to, but in the end, its up to them. If they cant make it, then they're going to fail anyway.

The thing for me is that if we had B team, let's say in Serie C, these young kids would get experience against men earlier and thus, the most talented ones could be more useful in Serie B level earlier. Everything adds up there with earlier progress. The issue in Italy is the most talented young players get to play against men way too late.

well, we need to see how Juve U23 do, but if they're anything to go off of, is a bunch of 21-23 year olds playing at Serie C level :D

Rayo Vallecano seems to me like a much better option…assuming he plays.

Yeah in a club like Brugge, you are expected to win. They are fighting for the domestic title so you kind of learn that kind of environment and the expectation level.

Fair enough, I have no idea who fights for titles in most these middle of the road Europe leagues.

Yeah that list isn't very comprehensive.

Russia has Spartak, Lokomotiv, Krasnodar and you can never discount CSKA.
Belgium has Genk and Anderlecht.
The Netherlands have PSV and Feyenoord. And AZ is doing okay.
Greece has a mafia for 25 years so even if there was someone else, it's hardly possible.

Denmark is 5 years too old, Midtjylland is the prime contender and there's Brondby these days as well as a resurgence of AGF who may become noisy in the near future.
