If the sums being thrown around are correct (and they are being reported by numerous credible sources), it’s hard to imagine we’ll turn it down. And Lukaku may not want to leave, but Chelsea is his boyhood club and I’m sure he wouldn’t turn down the chance to be a protagonist there.
Obviously we would suffer from a sporting perspective, at least in the short term, but the biggest loss would be his locker room presence and leadership. He’s a reference point for a lot of his teammates because he gets along well with basically everyone and they respect him— plus he has a ton of top-level experience and plenty of estimators.
Lukaku is one of our only internationally known players. The brand would certainly take a bit of a hit as well.
I’m not saying it’s the wrong decision, but I like many do not trust Suning at all in this moment. They completely desolved Jiangsu after winning their first title because it wasn’t good for business. What makes anyone think they won’t cut their losses by liquidating their investments in inter and move on?
If there’s anyone out there I trust to reinvest the money it’s Marotta, but I’m not sure if he can work under these conditions. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see him step away if they don’t let him work with a budget.
The fans have to be present in these moments and I’m sure they will be. We can’t stop it but we can call it out.
