It's the typical situation with international football and fans who pretend they care about their national team but they really don't.

Milanisti went to the stadium only to boo Donnarumma and then they bashed Mancini for not calling up Tonali. Juventini were bashing Bastoni, Insigne and Di Lorenzo but they had no criticism for Bonucci and Bernardeschi.

Bastoni wasn't good last night but he certainly wasn't the worst player yesterday. He's at fault for the first goal (in second all the defense was disorganized) but he also saved Italy from many dangerous situations.

The main problem was his defensive partner, Bonucci, didn't give him security which made him insecure in his game. He was much better in the second half next to Chiellini.

It was also a huge mistake of Mancini to switch to a back 3 with Bastoni in the middle and Di Lorenzo and Emerson on the sides. We have seen it at Inter. Bastoni isn't suited for the role. He can only play on the left in a back 3.
Agree with your entire post, but not convinced about Basto being at fault for the first goal. I am not trying to defend him at all costs, but the cross was flawless and Bonucci did nothing to block it while running next to Oyrazabal. The spaniard had all the time in the world to make that perfect curled cross. Anyway if that's what they want it's better for us to keep Basto at Appiano than sending him for an injury risk.

I really don't understand the sense of this. If it was Milan vs PSG i could understand. Donnarumma was getting really insecure, we almost conceded because of this where he couldn't hold the ball in the hands and the ball went on the post. At least they started applauding after that instead of booing.

Bonucci doesn't give security to anyone, he's the one who needs security. Like Chiellini (and Barzagli) provided to him all these years. :D

Bastoni is not ready yet obviously. He's been a disappointment this season in club football too. But that's almost like expected from such a young player playing as CB in a big club. Just needs time.

Certainly. For me the Inter-Juventus cup game in 2016 was the clear indication Bonucci can't be a leader in defence. Allegri had to bring in Barzagli very early in second half because the Bonucci-Rugani duo was in shambles. He can be great if you pair him with cbs with leadership skills like Chiellini and Barzagli but if you pair him with inexperienced cbs and expect him to lead the defence it will be a disaster. And that's why he failed at Milan where he was expected to be the leader.

I really don't understand some fans jeering and booing their NT keeper for a club related issue, specially months after his heroic saves led their nation to a European title.

Well, what to expect from the fans who did the same to their own long time captain Paolo Maldini on his farewell match.

Expecting an intelligent response from Milan fans is sort of like expecting a competent response from Inter management: it rarely happens.

I primarily put yesterday's loss on Mancini. He set the team up to fail when he decided to use Bernardeschi as a false nine. He knew Spain would dominate possession. You need someone (more) clinical on the pitch so you don't waste the few chances you get.

His response to going down to ten men was poor, as Il Drago said. He should have immediately made a sub to put the extra defender on. Instead he tried to survive until halftime and effectively ended the game.

Kean needs to start the third place game. Also, at the risk of agreeing with Milan fans, I would like to see Calabria at RB instead of Di Lorenzo.

Why people bash Bastoni and forget Barella? Barella was shit and I dont know why he wasnt the first player to sub. He should be the one to go off not Verratti/Jorginho.

Barella should retire from NT, there's no point, Italy is not winning any thing in the next 10 years. Mediocre level of talents all around, they fluffed the EURO but that's it, won't happen again.

I thought he failed becuase they played a 4 back line which exposed his defensive qualities which is non-existant.

Guys, lets chill with the negativity. This Azzurri are a young side with great team spirit who just won the Euro AND broke the record for the longest unbeaten run ever. Its obvious they will have a bad game every now and then. If it weren't for that stupid idiot Bonucci getting himself sent off, no one would have ruled out an Italy comeback in the 2nd half. Shit happens, sometimes.

A defeat now is not a disaster. These kids will learn from this. And I don't blame Mancini for experimenting, this is the time to do it. Before the world cup. For eg, Mancini started Bastoni coz that kid needs experience against top teams. Italy would have learnt nothing if they had started Chiellini and scraped through.

Now Mancini has another game where he can experiment and try some new players at this level. I hope the likes of Raspadori and Calabria get a chance to start. Those are two spots where Italy need some new solutions.

well, we were unbeaten for "only" 3 years too. Let's not act like there are so much better teams. Italy might be not that strong like one time, but other nations too. The only team i see really good (on paper) is France. But there are not great nations like one time. Maybe im going too much off road from your post but that's anyway my oppinion. I think a lot of people are saying that Italy sucks because they don't realize how much football changed in this last 10 years.

Not taking anything away from Lukaku, his goal and Carrasco's were both great. However Lloris was awful and I think he could've saved both of them, but didn't try enough to do it.
