tbh, Chelsea have a history of loaning back their strikers to the Milan clubs when it doesnt work out. I almost wonder if that's not unfeasible in this case. I'd happily take him back - IIRC they were quite generous loans back in the day (e.g. no fees, high salary % cover?) but I dont remember exactly. Best of both worlds, we get Lukaku and we get his 110m worth.

Off the top of my head you have at least Shevchenko and Crespo who they did that with, we also got Veron on similar conditions.

Though he's not worth 110m€, not even for us.

I really doubt Marina is willing to loan him for free and pay most of his salary to play for another club.

One of our best deals ever. I had no regrets whatsoever, even if he had done reasonably well. His age, the price and the potential for reinforcements (fucked up on that one though) made it too good to pass up. I guess the only thing wrong was the timing, as it could have gone real bad for us this season if we were unable to find someone to fill in. Yet we are still in need for a proper leader in attack. Hoping for better days.

My only thought on everything we discuss in this thread is quite a simple one... All season we cry & complain about our strikers, surely there's no one here who didn't wish we still had Lukaku right now??

We just wish that we spent some of that money on a striker.
Instead we got Correa, with a small part of that, who's a forward but not really a striker.

Yes of course, if we had off bought an actual replacement is also viable but we got Dzeko that's what happened, hence why we I feel no one would argue they wouldn't wish Lukaku was still here regardless of how you feel about him.

You ever break up with someone then you see them a few years later and they look like shit, but then you realize you too are fat and look like shit? That's how this feels.

Correa was such a weird choice. We already had sanchez and lautaro. It was painfully obvious we needed a dzeko replacement more.

Seemed like the classic “our new manager wants one of his former players so let’s get him to keep our new manager happy” moves.

He's a good player who is a poor fit for the elite Premier League clubs. Lukaku was special because in Serie A close to no players had his combination of size and speed. His technical shortcomings were mitigated by his superior athletic abilities and Conte's perfect system.

In England he's a bit of a dime a dozen. Is he that different from a Calvert-Lewin? Not to mention all the defenders are much faster. He's doesn't have the technical ability to stay involved in play and is useless unless it's on the counter.

This guy had it made in Italy. You know he stays up late at night regretting leaving. The dude would have been a lock for the capocannoniere under Inzaghi. We were smart to sell him for the fee we got, but Marotta did an embarrassing job replacing him. Chelsea lost, our on field performance lost, and Lukaku lost. The only thing that benefited from this transfer was our income statement.

Also Tuchel isn't blameless for the situation. He should have studied player's strengths and weaknesses instead of simply expecting him to adjust to Chelsea's game. Lukaku is a bad fit for Chelsea style. If Tuchel wasn't willing to adjust to Lukaku he shouldn't have been after him in the first place.

Brehme, given our troubles when it comes to scoring goals, do you still stand behind the decision to sell him?

Personally, I think we made the right decision in selling him. However, we erred in thinking that Dzeko and Correa could share Lukaku's goal tally between them.
Given that we didn't spend the money and we evidently had to sell someone and assuming that were Lautaro and not Barella or Skriniar, given also the Dzeko fetish Marotta had and the fact that we could barely secure Correa with our Lukaku funds, at best we'd end up with Correa himself...

No regrets whatsoever.
Imagine having to endure a static Lukaku-Dzeko partnership up front with no pressing... At least we wouldn't be bothered with any Liverpool games

Don’t bother arguing. Guy made up his mind Lukaku is shit before he even joined and will never be able to replace his beloved Icardi.

You're taking for granted that we'd be scoring if Lukaku was here instead of Lautaro. (Because the two of them most probably wouldn't have been here)

That means:
- Lukaku has a different role and we've seen that he struggles with anything less than being the first recipient of the ball.
- Inzaghi tolerating Lukaku and letting him stick around despite being detrimental to the rest of the team, a la Conte.
- The team still has to work for Lukaku defensively as well as offensively, limiting us even more.

We have the following data:
- We are losing steam after 65-75 minutes.
- Lukaku scored a lot of goals for Inter (64), but the number of goals that came in the last 30 minutes are:

a) 26 out of 47 Serie A goals (8 PKs)
b) 4 out of 6 CL goals
c) 3 out of 7 EL goals (one PK)
d) 2 out of 4 Coppa goals (one PK)

That's more than half of his goals (34 out of 64) coming in the last 30 minutes, which seems a bit.. unbalanced, no?

To take the cut off to 75 minutes, we see this:
a) 11 out of 47 Serie A goals (3 PKs)
b) 2 out of 6 CL goals
c) 3 out of 7 EL goals (one PK)
d) 1 out of 4 Coppa goals (it was a 119th minute winner, so extra time, and obviously included above as well)

Which drops this to 17/64 goals (over 1/4 of total) in the last 15 minutes, 11 of which were in the last 5 minutes of the game (or in extra time).

This is the "best way to use him" as called by everyone, including Conte. So knowing that our team cannot run at the same tempo over 90 minutes as with Pintus coaching them, knowing that Inzaghi doesn't feel the same way about Lukaku as Conte and knowing that we'd need a new pressing forward instead of Lautaro who'd be at least at the same level (would love to see people naming such players), do you honestly feel that Lukaku could have been an important player for Inter under our current setup? Even if you don't replace Lautaro with anyone, not Dzeko, not some imaginary second forward, do you see this pattern being replaced by something else?

I'd appreciate if someone can pull off the number of goals we scored in the last 30 minutes under Conte vs under Inzaghi per season.
