A great mind of the Arab(and let's say islamic) world passed away.

R.I.P. Naguib Mahfouz

I found this a very nice obituary for him..

True, he was a great mind indeed. To be honest, I never read any of his books, but some of his work was made into tv series which were great.

OH SHIT!!!! HE Died???!!!??? I never knew that (should start readin gyptian papers) this guy was a great writer, I never read any of his books in artabic :)rolleyes:) but i read alot in english translation. He knows how to captivate a reader, leaves them hanging. Like that book, the thieves and the dog (alharami wa al kilaab i think ) the main man dies in the most unexpected way, that got me pissed but longing for more. No Arab writer can compare to him for me. God have mercy on his soul, R.I.P Nageeb Mahfouth.

Wonder if I can
I finally got russian textbooks from 1961 called "History of Diplomacy". I was searching in all the antiquarian bookstores here in my city and in a city of my university for about 1 and half year.

It is something like trilogy but only first and beginning of second part are worthwhile. I was surprised that books are in very good condition.

Anybody read Machiaveli's 'The Prince' yet? I'm planning to get that book since I'm a person who's in total agreement of Machiaveli's principle of "the end justifies the means."

I'm now reading "In Praise of Folly" by Desiderius Erasmus, I think it's a good book, and I had a few laughs with it, some of the things that he talks about in the book are still very "fresh" nowadays.

Man I have seriously slowed down on the reading front. School has taken up too much time this semester. Currently I am in the middle of Shelley's Frankenstein. Dont really know why I picked it up but for some reason I did and it has turned out to be a great read.

Great literature for those of us who are more into the substance rather than the all action package.

Today I had visited our library and was in a dilemma which one to choose. Finally I put my hand on William Golding: Lord of the Flies. Seems to be very interesting and to be honest, I've wanted to read it long time ago.

My next goal is Oscar Wilde: The Picture of Dorian Gray.

:)

I read The Stranger a while ago, and by far, it is the best book I have ever read :star:

One I have in mind is The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

Hmm, Lord of the Flies sounds great too from what I read, tell us later how it was Michal and if it is recommended.

it's also one of my favourite books. I still haven't found the time to read it in french though..real pity.

I also liked the picture of dorian gray a lot..but more because of wilde's language and way to write.

And just like waleed, I haven't read fiction in ages..
