I feel like this has nothing to do with age, I remember Figo refusing to play one game for Mancini.

Yh that was in CL against Liverpool. I like Mancini but he did handle that situation wrongly imo. There's this unwritten rule that you can't ask a player of Figo status to come on last 5 min coz that's considered insulting. Conte done something similar with ADP and although ADP didn't make an issue out of it like Figo, but still I always thought Conte was a cunt for doing that.

Back to Seba he doesn't have the status and therefore he shouldn't be refusing to come on. He should appreciate whatever minutes he's given and perform.

Not really. It's like refusing to speak in an important meeting (of your responsibility) that is raising funds for your company.

Not a very good decision by Sebastiano.

I do not really understand it. It is not like he is conquering the Swiss League in the sense of his abilities being well above the standard of play. Even if that were the case, it still would not excuse being summoned by your coach and electing to remain on the bench.

this guy has the rest of the season to convince, otherwise i think we should look to sell him
Might be a bit early to sell him dude is still 19.......
But he s season has gone quite down hill when he came he won a starting spot quite fast and scored and assisted quite often. To the point where Basel fans were hyping him up as the next big thing. Then he got injured and it all went down from there.....
Dude clearly is struggling with losing his starting spot that being said i think it s mostly mental if he can put in the work he ll get back to being a god prospect.

It s a bit of a case and i dont like it but dude has to learn how to be a professional and imho at 19 he still is allowed to make a few missteps

oh absolutely he can still make mistakes, but he relaly needs to have a breakthrough season here tbh. it started off well, and if he can get back to the form he started the season, i have faith he'll make it for inter, but he needs it to pick up really in the next 2-3 months.

the thing is, 19 is young, but if you compare his career path to some of the other guys out there, he needs to pick it up a bit imho

True but lets not forget that he was injured for most of the time since his hot start, he played the first 5 league games and since then has been injured on and off making him miss 9 of the next 13 games. So yes he cooled off but it s not all down to him not performing or being a dik head.
None the less he needs to pick it up.

Also lets not forget that dimaarco was in the super league at one point and he was not impressing at all and managed to become a decent rotational player for us.

Espo has a contract until 2025 and his wages are not that high. So I expect to see him loaned out for 2 more season. I also hope he will act like a professional. There's a bunch of much better players that got to play just 5 minutes and even if they were probably pissed inside, they still went out and played.

Basel director Philipp Degen doesn’t consider on-loan Inter striker Sebastiano Esposito to be a behaviour problem at the club.

Speaking to German sports news outlet Blick!, the director defended Esposito after the 19-year-old’s refusal to come on as a substitute in the Swiss side’s Europa Conference League group stage match against Qarabag.
The 19-year-old striker is aware of his mistake with the incident against Qarabag and wants to atone for it.

“He himself knows that this must not happen and that he is doing enormous damage to himself and the club,” Degen stated of the incident.
“However, something had been building up for weeks,” he added. “He had trouble with injuries for a long time and was very impatient.”
“He’s not a bad young man, in fact he has a great disposition and is very professional,” he added, “he doesn’t allow himself to get into trouble, he doesn’t go to parties.”
Degen went on that “When he’s in a good mood, he can decide matches. But he is also a boy who must be given close guidance.”
He added that “I want to have strong characters in the team, and not just yes-men for everything. Esposito has suffered enormously from the incident and has learned a lot. But he is not an enfant terrible.”

....

Inter-owned Basel striker Sebastiano Esposito is sorry for recent controversial incidents he has been involved in with the Swiss club.

Writing to Basel fans in a message on his Instagram account, the 19-year-old emphasized that he must grow up after a red card against Grasshoppers and after refusing to come off the bench against Qarabag.

“This is not a particularly easy period for me, but I have to try to put it in the past by doing the right thing,” he writes.
“I apologize to everyone,” he continues, “the fans, the club (who made me feel at home from day one), teammates (who have become like a second family as I’ve been here), and my opponents.”
He goes on that ”It is always said that us young players must gain experience and I have understood that in these difficult moments we learn and grow, understanding mistakes and taking responsibility.”
“It is in these moments that, facing the difficulty with the right mentality, you can become great,” he adds.
Esposito continues that “It is useless to look for justifications: the anger and frustration about injuries, the lack of the ball at my feet, and the adrenaline of a goal, none of these justify inappropriate actions.”
“But they help to understand the roots of these incidents, to reflect, reason, and learn,” he adds.
“Moreover, they help to potentially improve, as a person and as a footballer,” he goes on. “The time has come to be a man, age is just a number and it won’t stop me from growing.”
He concludes, “Now I can only turn the page and work hard to build a better future. Forza Basel!”
