To be completely fair to management, the striker is only imperative for a CL progression. We've already met our target so I don't think they'll haste.
The only way we go for a striker now is to secure a player we really want, like Scamacca, but Sassuolo ain't selling.
We could go for a loan deal if we need cover and we will probably will. Imagine Sanchez returning injured from South America and Correa still not being fit, Lautaro could be jet lagged. That leaves us with Dzeko and a non-fit Lautaro for the derby and then we just have to wait for the returns. Back to Spallo days with Ranocchia as box striker?
We do not need someone who will displace Dzeko at the moment, but we need someone for cover. I mean someone like Pavoletti, Petagna, Caicedo etc, a cheap deal that provides backup, will feature in like 10 games at best, mostly as a sub and would only be used in an emergency. Getting an alternate to Scamacca now means that we miss out in the summer mercato. And this would also be a panic buy. Imagine if the alternative to Scamacca is someone that never played in Italy, doesn't speak the language etc. He won't even be helpful for the next few months and will probably get 'burned' by the time the next season begins. There's no need for this kind of deal at the moment.
But we definitely want something better, but we don't really need that to meet our current ambitions. Scudetto and Coppa. That's it. We don't have expectations in the Champions League, just enjoying the ride. But I expect that next year we'll have a target to reach quarters and the market needs to reflect that.
We have a lot of extra players at the moment, some of which earn a lot. We cannot do much in the winter mercato unfortunately.
