Good for us if he can get some reps until the end of the season. Hopefully he doesn’t let the other keeper back on the pitch because his form is good.

It's very typical of Onana. He's been having the same ones since 2016. At least he had the excuse of being 18-19 back then. Now he has the lack of excuses for not improving since then...

The only other club that was in for Onana was Lyon... Just shows you no one really wanted him.
And Arsenal. Who settled for a relegated team's gk.

We've got a proper heir to Handa. What a silly attempt.

It is a very typical Onana mistake for his beginning season indeed. He hasn't played a full season in 2 years and is playin regular time since January. Thereby the pressure from the Ajax fans on him is enormous.

No he hasn't improved the last two years but from 2017 (leading player for Ajax when reaching the Europa league final) until his suspension (januari 2021) he was a top-10 goalkeeper easily. Let's see if he can grow to that level again, it's a big pro for us Ajax is forced to play him again until the end of this season IMO.

He will find that Inter fans are more unforgiving and will even blame him for things that aren't his fault. But Onana makes himself an easy target for fan vore.

I think that's a gross overstatement.
He was never a top GK. Ajax was a top team, but Onana was something like Valdes at Barcelona. More of a passenger than an important driver of the situation. The difference is that Onana at least looks like a goalkeeper whereas Valdes was simply a fraud.

Also, if he needs to play a lot of games every time he sits out for a moment, it's bad news. You need to be on alert at all times playing for clubs like Inter. Ajax has the luxury of not playing against sides that can beat them in the league if they switch off. Inter does not. If the coach deems that he's not better than the other goalkeepers on the team and benches him for 6-7 weeks, he'll return and do these silly things more often? It's not as if playing consistently eradicates it.
The excuse of not playing could have been valid if he wasn't the starter of Cameroon in the recent African Cup. That was a lot of games, high pressure games, too. Not a great appearance even, but that one you could blame on inactivity to a degree. Last night? No, that's typical Onana as you said earlier.

Last night, Benfica was toothless. They literally had this one attempt on target which went in because Onana has never learned how to exit properly, he acts on pure instinct and that's not always on the correct side.

I think you are underestimate what the last 15 months did with Onana and his confidence. I agree with you that with Inter the pressure will be bigger, but at Ajax the pressure is also enormous. Especially for him, but thats mostly his own fault indeed.

Onana was an important driver of their success. Ask any Ajax supporter and they will admit it. He saved their ass more than once in the Champions League. He was their best player with De Ligt, De Jong and Ziyech. And in my opinion a goalkeeper is less dependent on a style of play than field players.

I'm not here to defend Onana or something, but i really do rate him highly. But as i've said before he will need some time to find his best form again and regain his confidence. Is Inter the ideal place to do that? I doubt it. But i really do hope we give him a long run, because if we do, i really believe we have a top goalkeeper for the coming years.

I can only say that I hope you're right, but from what I've seen from Onana since 2016, I'm struggling to believe he can lead Inter's defense.

Damn. Even I get doubts about him. Before his suspension he was imo a very very good keeper on the line. He had indeed sometimes mistakes with crosses/free kicks etc but he was young. I'm hoping this errors come from the fact he hasn't been playing in over a year. Players who get back from long injuries etc are slowly integrated into the team but a GK needs to be back to his normal level right away.

But damn he looked really bad yesterday. You can see in the reply he only has eyes for the ball and not once looked in front of him what happened there. FFS what a game to make a mistake like this.

Irrelevant. Just because he was playing for a relegated side it doesn't mean he was a bad player. There have been many examples of good players who were playing for relegated sides (Tonali, Anguissa, Robertson, Wijnaldum etc.).

No Milan player
Isn't the goal was also due to the CB no 2 (timber) mistake in not making any challenge to pressure nunez.

The ball was being placed centrally instead of a floating cross across the defense hence not ideal for keeper to challenge as well and onana is late to go there.

If it is handa, he will stay on the line and its 50-50 chance for the keeper to stop the ball as nunez basically did the header unchallenged at good angle and decent ball speed. It still could be a goal.

I know but I simply wanted to highlight that Arsenal's shopping cart wasn't really anything special for such a neuralgic position.

I'm sure that eventually some top side would have been linked to him if they needed a GK but most did not. Chelsea ended up with Mendy for example who was nothing special. Maignan of Milan on the other hand showed more quality at Lille.

The best GKs we could have gone for are Unai Simon (expensive) or Juan Musso (missed our chance). Onana is on the lower end of the second tranche and I'm confident that we'll be missing Handanovic. The only way people tolerate Onana is by ignoring him, assuming their standards about what constitutes expected goalkeeping remain constant. Or maybe they'll praise some unnecessary acrobatic saves when the basics are close to a failure.

My guy will need serious tutoring and a lot of dedication if he's to be Inter's #1 for years and not a meme transfer.
