When I think about this match, I'm strongly reminded of 2 games in particular this season which which should've acted as a springboard and provided a morale boost for the players:
1) the Supercoppa win against juve, where we came from behind to win in extra time in dramatic fashion
2) the victory over Liverpool where we became the first team in a year to win at Anfield, also being one of two teams to keep a clean sheet at Anfield in nearly a year
As we all know, this did not happen. Instead, we followed up both of these great wins with fucking abysmal games. After winning the Supercoppa, we drew 0-0 against a COVID and injury-ravaged Atalanta - probably the single weakest Atalanta matchday squad in the Gasperini era. In fact we came much closer to losing were it not for a vintage Handanovic performance.
Likewise, following the lucky but encouraging win at Liverpool, we followed it with an underwhelming 1-1 draw against Fiorentina. Keep in mind that since 2000, we have a 85% win rate at home against Fiorentina.
This is a long-winded way of saying we have so far followed up big wins with big turds. Truth be told, we were fucking dismal against juve too and in terms of play, we were dominated from minute 1 to minute 90. That's not an encouraging sign.
But there really, really is no more time for fucking around. Once again we play before Milan and we can temporarily move to within 1 point if we beat Verona. If the once-in-a-decade win at juve wasn't enough to raise our spirits, Milan gave us extra motivation by dropping points to Bologna. If these fucking cunts can't win here, they can all go to hell. There's only so many times you can waste opportunities before the opportunities are gone.
