The defender’s current contract expires at the end of this season and the Giallorossi have the option to extend it for a further year, but the Englishman wants a little more stability and is asking for a two-year deal.
Both parties are keen to continue their relationship and will now negotiate over the details of a new contract. Roma do not want to pay Smalling the current €3.5m net per season he earns in the Italian capital and could reach an agreement to lower his wages to €2.5m net, with some add-ons included.
The next international break in March could provide the perfect time for the two parties to agree a deal
