Inter had come close to signing legendary former Santos and Brazil forward Pele in 1958, but the opposition of fans of Santos caused the deal to fall through
This according to former Nerazzurri President Massimo Moratti, who told Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it that his father had a contract with the Brazilian icon ready but that it was the reaction of fans back in Brazil that stopped the transfer.

Pele passed away yesterday evening, depriving football of one of its greatest and most iconic player.

The Brazilian great only ever played for two clubs in his career, namely Santos and New York Cosmos.

The former forward did naturally attract plenty of transfer interest during his career however, given his status as the best player in the world or very close to it.

According to Moratti, the Nerazzurri had made an attempt to sign Pele and come close, although in the end he remained at Santos, where he spent the vast majority of his career.

“When I read that he had been close to joining Milan in the Gazzetta, I was surprised,” the former Inter President said.

“Sure, maybe, but Inter were certainly the first European club to have that great player in hand.”

“I remember perfectly that we had signed Pele for the 1958-59 season, he was the young kid who astonished the world in Sweden and my father knew that he had to act fast to get ahead of the competition,” Moratti continued.

“It was a full contract, signed, and it only needed to be deposited.”

“But as soon as they heard about it in Brazil, there was an uproar against the club directors there, so how could we go through with it?”

“When you consider that there were really threats against the President of Santos, and you think you never know what some crazed person might do… it was no longer just a football situation, it was a matter of conscience and so my father tore the contract up.”

Moratti explained that “The person who we were hearing on the other end of the phone was someone obviously very concerned for his safety.”

“Then, when things calmed down we tried to return to the deal,” he added, “but by that point things were closed off for other reasons.”
RIP Pelé

Not sure if the translation is proper, but it's always nice to hear of Moratti once in a while. Here's a little interview he gave for GdS ahead of the match vs Porto.

Moratti: "Porto tough, beating him would be a feat. Inzaghi? Excellent in direct matches, but too many ups and downs in the league"

"Knowing that Inter were the last Italian to win makes me proud, but life goes on and I hope that the recent trend in our football will reverse. This is an anomalous season, without unbeatable opponents, and Milan and Napoli can also do street". Says Massimo Moratti , interviewed by the Gazzetta dello Sport to talk about the Champions League on the day of Inter-Porto.

Moratti, how will Inter-Porto finish?
"They are a tough and organized team. Maybe not in name, but annoying to deal with. Eliminating them wouldn't sound like a feat, but it would be. And it would be an excellent calling card to make progress even later."

Really?
"Yes, the squad is strong and experienced. I don't see unbeatable teams and if we go through we can gain conviction. After all, it happened in 2010 too, after eliminating Chelsea in the round of 16."

But then there was Mourinho, who had already won the Cup with Porto.
"True, but Inzaghi is good at direct matches. Last year we played on a par with the real Liverpool and three months ago they eliminated Barcelona in the group stage."

Yet in the league Inter lost their second consecutive Scudetto despite the fact that according to many they have a superior squad to whoever wins it.
"Considering that this Napoli is proving to be super, every coach has his own characteristics. Conte was said to be obsessive, but in the meantime he brought the Scudetto. With Inzaghi the team is more free to express itself, but it has too many ups and downs".

Who will be the man of the match?
"Lautaro. Incredible striker, who scores, fights and is decisive. And with Lukaku two seasons ago, Inter would have put much more pressure on Napoli. For us, he was decisive and he was taken back because he was considered such. The injuries have braked and for one with his physique feeling good is even more important than for others".

Legendary Ex-Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti: "Inter In Crisis, Simone Inzaghi Must Prove He Can Keep Team Focused"

Legendary former Inter President Massimo Moratti feels that at this moment in time the Nerazzurri in crisis.

Speaking to Italian news outlet Leggo, Moratti attributed the team’s struggles to problems with concentration and organization, and suggested that coach Simone Inzaghi is facing a crucial test in which he must prove his suitability to remain in his position.

Last Friday’s shock loss away to Spezia seemed to confirm that, even if Inter may bounce back temporarily this season, there will always be another setback for them in Serie A.

Against the Aquilotti, the Nerazzurri had the majority of possession and missed a penalty in the first half, but never looked fully settled-in as they were unable to truly test the relegation-battling team’s backline and goalkeeper Bartolmiej Dragowski enough to break through.

From former President Moratti’s perspective, this Inter look like “A team lacking in concentration, after a good performance they go back to lacking the necessary organization to win matches.”

Of striker Romelu Lukaku, Moratti said that “He’s out of condition, he’s still looking off the pace.”

Of the difference in the Nerazzurri’s form at home and away in Serie A, Moratti said that “I think there’s something to it that’s psychological.”

“I don’t think it’s just the lack of the fans supporting them, maybe tactically we’re not finding the right solutions.”

And of coach Inzaghi, the former President argued that “The coach always bears all the responsibility, whether the team wins or loses.”

“In this case they’re losing so he has to suffer all the harrasment from the press and the fans and so forth.”

“He strikes me as a coach who wants to let the players go out and express themselves,” Moratti said of Inzaghi.

“He still has to show that he knows how to keep the team focused on a continual basis,” he suggested of the current coach.

Of tomorrow evening’s Champions League match away to Porto, Moratti predicted that “It won’t be an easy match, even if Inter play a great match, Porto are a strong team and we have to be wary.”

MORATTI BLAMES INZAGHI FOR INTER WOES AND SUPPORTS ZHANG
Former Inter President Massimo Moratti pins the blame squarely on coach Simone Inzaghi and insists Suning and Steven Zhang represent ‘the best option’ for the club.

The Nerazzurri are sliding down the Serie A table to joint fourth place with Roma after three consecutive defeats and risk missing out on Champions League qualification.
That would be catastrophic fo their finances and could prompt a radical cost-cutting exercise, including the sale of top players.

Fans are turning angrily on owners Suning and their prime representative, President Steven Zhang, but he has support from the man who took Inter to the Treble in 2010.
“Everyone attacks Zhang, but so far he has supported the club well and is the best option. I don’t see many alternatives for Inter,” Moratti told Radio Radio.
“I see these funds that come and go, it is no longer possible to have a family running a football club, especially an Italian one.”

Instead, Moratti pins the blame on coach Inzaghi for their recent poor results, even if he has been able to win the Coppa Italia and two editions of the Supercoppa Italiana.
“Zhang put a strong team in the hands of the coach, who is struggling to get the best out of it. The coach and directors ought to co-operate better.”

Massimo Moratti was at the helm of Inter from 1995 to November 2013, following in the footsteps of his father Angelo, whose reign lasted from 1955 to 1968.

He's always looked old. I think it's entirely on genetics. Some people grow older but their looks remain fresh and young. Some might say it's about skincare routine and whatever, which I don't think so. That's all a scam $$$. I know people whom never do skincare routine but they look younger than what they are.

Well, unless you do any kind of plastic surgery, but that's another case.

I said years ago that Moratti was classic inherited wealth - eg unable to grow it and make businesses flourish. It's a classic 2/3 generation wealth thing

Anyway look at the Sara's share price -

Not sure what your sources are but don`t fall for every rumor. It was a scheduled operation:

Ex-Inter President Moratti has heart surgery
Former Inter President Massimo Moratti is in hospital after undergoing a heart procedure and is said to be in stable condition.

According to various sources, Moratti underwent angioplasty to clear clogged arteries and it had been a scheduled procedure, usually performed under only a local anaesthetic.

He is in the Galeazzi Hospital in Milan, where his condition is stable and under observation.

The 78-year-old was the President of the club from 1995 to 2004, then again from 2006 to 2013, including the period when they won the Treble of Scudetto, Champions League and Coppa Italia in 2009-10.

During his tenure, the Nerazzurri won five Serie A titles, four editions of the Coppa Italia, four Supercoppa Italiana trophies, the Champions League, UEFA Cup and Club World Cup.

His father Angelo had also been President of Inter from 1955 to 1968.
Glad that he`s taking care of himself.

If he was taking care of himself, he wouldn't have clogged arteries.

He has officially sold the refineries. Also, the decline in wealth doesn't really seem like it was his doing, its just the energy market is terrible in general, not even sure what you can do if you don't lever your dick out and risk getting it snapped trying to measure dicks with middle eastern oil tycoons and texas cowboys. This is the story of basically all European business, just in other sectors its more of levering your dick against us and chinese mega caps who usually have a united state that supports them (at least they did until like 5 years ago for china).

Dunno bro. Shell is up like 2x over a time Saras has been flat. They pay stupid high dividends too - capital that could have been reinvested in the business. Currently over 10% yield.
