I wouldn't call players like Gosens, Hateboer, Castagne, Malinovsky, Pessina, Pasalic,... 'talents'.

If Atalanta can get good money for them and reinvest well, it's good for the league. And I'm sure they will.

Gosens himself has said in the past he doesn't want to play for other Serie A club. He can easily find a club for himself elsewhere.

Very sad, but seems like it. Funny thing is, Newcastle isn't even guaranteed to stay up. I wonder if we'll see the timeline where they drop and immediately get to release every bought player for half the invested price.

Anyway, for Gosens this probably 3x his wages. Sad state of football that a relegation tier premier club can offer that much more wages than a top tier Serie A team. Though, Atalanta has always been on very fine wages margins (props to them, they embody more of what football is than anyone else).

I just wonder if there is literally no one else interested with a brighter future that can pay 3.5m? Doesn't seem the most insane demand for the player he is.

Newcastle are a big club, they've had their struggles sure but their still a big club. They make the right signings and they're going to get out of the relegation zone in my opinion, then they are set for next season with a decent backbone and summer window to improve dramatically.

Yeah people don't realize that when people shit on Manchester City and Chelsea for "having no history" (which was invalid), two of those set of fans were Newcastle and Aston Villa, who are both the heavy spenders of this window.

Aston Villa is literally a top 5 English club, by any standard out there. And Newcastle is a top 10 one. Other than Leeds, not that many can claim a spot in the top 10, there's a bunch of good enough but never great clubs.


It's definitely not a good sign for everyone else when the PL clubs that aren't expected to be protagonists have these large transfer kitties, but I'd rather have a league corrupt with match fixing than money laundering. One's epidemic, the other's pandemic.

Lots of these clubs also get big loans because they have assets (stadium, training ground), they use expected revenue (tv deal and attendance) and too many of them are debt ridden due to their ownership structure. Having access to debt is a significant boost. Others get debt due to deficit and it fucks them up even harder (ie Inter in last decade, Milan, Roma, Valencia etc). Barcelona tried that and it backfired to a large degree. Real Madrid tried that, it failed, but they're considered too big to fail by the Spanish state, the Castillan region and the Madrid council, so they're bailed out often.

If you look at the scenes below, tier 2 and tier 3 with their stupid names, Championship and League One respectively [just think about those names a bit], almost all of them are on the verge of bankruptcy but depend on their owners. Some owners give up and clubs fail. It's not much dissimilar in Italy, but in the Italian lower leagues it's mostly administrative bullshit than economic mismanagement or debt. Sometimes it's both.

The problem is that every crook goes to buy an English club with the hopes of laundering money if he gets to the Premier League. But it's tough to get there as there are various limits in the 2nd tier and competition is intense. Clubs go all in, whether they have a legit backing or an illicit one.


It's not "better" managed or anything, it's just the business environment is such that it allows for these things to take place. The cliche phrase is one you hear every week on tv: It's good for business.
What you don't hear is that business is not good for everyone.

No, they're a big club because they've been relevant in top tier football for 100 years, they're a top 10 team in their country whether that's on titles won or all time standings, have a very large domestic fanbase and despite turbulence, they've been rather relevant in the last 30 years (which for some reason get highlighted in English football)

This also applies to Everton, which actually is also another top 5 club in England. Their only... problem is that they completely fucked up in the PL era, but prior to that they were a lock for Top 5 English sides.
