Unless the "backup" is meant to break into the first team and take over someone`s position who they have been long planning to sell...

De Vrij's situation is probably unclear but yeah adding Akanji now to groom him into the team so he can take it from where De Vrij leaves it if he leaves next summer would be a good solution.

Other solution is loan CB now and next summer De Vrij either stays or he leaves and we need to sign a starting CB. We need to sign the backup CB anyway next summer (in all scenarios).
