Have been linked to Smalling in the past and he is Serie A proven by now. Why pay 3+15M for Smalling when you can have him for free, years later? Sounds like a classic Inter move.

Anyone know how much is Smalling curently earning at Roma?

Smalling’s Roma contract expires this coming June and his agent James Featherstone has recently claimed that the Giallorossi do not have an option to extend his stay at the club by one more season.

Tuttosport and Il Romanista report Inter are considering signing the English centre-back as a free agent in the summer, given that some of their defenders could also leave at the end of their contracts in June, among them are Danilo D’Ambrosio and Stefan de Vrij, who have not yet begun talks with the Nerazzurri.

As per Il Romanista, the Giallorossi director Tiago Pinto has already identified a potential replacement for Smalling. It’s Eintracht Frankfurt’s defender N’Dicka who will be available on a free transfer in the summer if he fails to extend his current deal beyond June 2023.

Seems like Inter are putting some pressure on De Vrij to accept the club`s conditions for an extension.

Sad to say, but Smalling right now is an upgrade over all 3 of our defenders. Especially De Vrij.

Even if he is, which I don't think he is, he's also older than all 3 of our defenders by a wide margin. Bringing in high wage 33 year old players is the same nonsense that's gotten us in this predicament. Maybe we can just save everyone some time and give him his golden handshake now.

The former Manchester United centre-back has a clause in his deal that would allow him to trigger a one-year extension should he feature in at least 50% of the Giallorossi’s matches this season, retaining his annual wage of €3.8 million. Smalling has proven himself to be a hugely popular figure at Roma since arriving on an initial loan in 2019, and has featured in every Serie A match this season under Jose Mourinho.
