Nothing wrong with being done with transfer market as early as possible. That gives coach a clear view of situation with new players and their adjustment. But I have to admit, last minute signing of a high-profile player brings an unmatchable excitement.

He's struggling at United because he looks like a counter-attacking player trying to be inserted into a team that plans (mostly badly) to play progressive, front-foot football. As the great majority of teams we play defend against us, we more need technicians who can break down packed defences. We have Thuram for breakaways after all.

Anyway he would be crazy expensive just because United so overpaid for him. Even if they just want the money back they have not amortised then you are talking £45m.
