What exactly is an ethnic Canadian?

sorry to burst your bubble mr.434 iq

An ethnic group or ethnicity is a population of human beings whose members identify with each other, either on the basis of a presumed common genealogy or ancestry, or recognition by others as a distinct group, or by common cultural, linguistic, religious, or territorial traits.

so for the purpose of those statistics, it makes perfect sense.

A Canadian is someone made up of:
French, Italian, Irish, English, Scottish, Jewish, Haitian, Greek German, Portuguese, Romanian, Armenian, etc. So who is a Canadian that is not one of those? Such thing doesn't exist. If Canadians were an ETHNIC group, then there wouldn't be any of the other ethnic groups mentioned..duh

If you wanna play smart, try to answer the question instead of digging insignificant holes of stupidity

While most people in Canada view themselves as Canadians, information on their ancestral origins has been collected since the 1901 Census to capture the changing composition of Canada’s diverse population. Therefore, this question refers to the origins of the person’s ancestors. To which ethnic or cultural group(s) did this person’s ancestors belong? For example, Canadian, French, English, Chinese, Italian, German, Scottish, Irish, Cree, Micmac, Métis, Inuit (Eskimo), East Indian, Ukrainian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Filipino, Jewish, Greek, Jamaican, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Chilean, Somali, etc. So this thing says that Canadian ethnicity has been created and is eligible for those that have lived there for over 100 years?(it says that it was made in 2001) Lol... It could be sensible if you go and ask yourself where the heck your ancestors where from 2500 years ago... So whatever we say cannot change anything. The point is that ethnic Canadians cannot exist, cause Canada is an immigrant nation, with no original citizens that have preserved their status. When you find me 11,682,680 original Canadians, I'll say you're correct and that ethnic Canadians exist...

I saw this thread few days ago and when i heard a Greek Song tonight, "I gotta post it there" i said to myself..

The song actually starts after 1:00..

I'm a Turkish guy, and if you know a little bit of our history, you will know that we are a very multicultural country.. While being western part more "European-like", the northern part is a bit more "Caucasian" and "Laz people", and the eastern part being "middle-east people (couldn't find the right word, but not Arabs, in fact Ottomans had very bad relations with Arabs all their history long)" and "Kurds" mostly.. Categorizing the parts of a nation isn't my intention, don't get me wrong, i've always seen all of us in under one roof. And if you know about Ottoman Empire's border expansion policy, you will know that wherever they conquered, they let people be as they were until that time and as they could get full rights, most of them migrated to Ottoman Empire's heart, mostly to Istanbul. Now, this is what i'm very thankful of.. You don't get to live in a city where you can find a Mosque, a Church and a Synagogue at the same street.. I've always loved that, despite i'm being an atheist. With that said, we also had many Greek people. The Greeks affected our culture as much as we affected theirs, and in the end, i think we have an awesome common culture with them.. And thus i think we should be allies with ourselves, despite the number of ignorant patriotic fools of both sides who sees Turks/Greeks as enemies.. Anyway, the politics isn't my intention.. :)

I think Yuko is the person who will understand my feelings most, as he has Greek blood.. Wouldn't you want to drink a glass of Raki/Ouzo at the seaside of Aegean while listening to this song Yuko? :) Despite the song being Greek, i can fully say that this is my culture as well, and wouldn't it be stupid to argue about "this culture is Turks/Greeks?" or "Greeks stole our Raki and named it Ouzo and vice versa"? So let's just bring this things aside and enjoy "our" culture.

(Oh yes i'm very, very emotional at the moment :D)

nice song :)

there are too many common songs between the two countries, specially common stuff between cuisines. Greek spicy recipes are from the east (Anatolia, present Turkey, as well as Syria, Lebanon etc), sweets are usually from the north...(Thraki, Makedonia)

Greek music is just too variable for the small size of the Hellenism (around 20m all over the world and 10-12m in Greece, islands & Cyprus)

Rebetiko music is a kind I really like.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxOHb0NJIdo

This is a sort of Greek folk music. I prefer this one. The other type is much slower, more compatible to those that drink heavy drinks, just to drink... This type is "happier'". People drink and get up to dance :p

Other sort of folk music, called Zeimbekiko. This is similar to Rebetiko, but usually has more sad lyrics. Zembetiko = pain. Rebetiko = misery (?). Something like that. Zeimbekiko has a "drunken" dance. Watch here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp5ZXR4pvsk

Probably the best living Greek folk (and not only) singer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afQ4OyUqblg

my favorite Zembekiko song.... ("tonight, I want to drink" the title)
Best Greek female singer imo along with Nana Mouskouri

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ljpCgRaBgc

a nice song here, by a great singer (among the best Greeks ever). A semi-happy folk song...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaByjRlQZnQ

same artist, great song....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31PgdlghAMk

another type of folk song

you could check Natasa Theodoridou, a great female singer.

Lol fucking Irish. I need English subtitles to understand you lot :p I do see the resemblance to Trailer Park Boys though. And Pajo the movie you might be thinking of is 'Only the Strong'. I only know this cos me and my sister watched it religiously growing up.

And to expand on my earlier post about Canadian culture (which was 3 fucking years ago?!) if you ever decide to visit (stay far away from the months of November through March) I highly suggest trying a few Canadian delicacies. Poutine (french fries covered in cheese curds and gravy) is simply amazing. The best is in the province of Quebec where it originated but I had an amazing poutine in a small town in eastern Ontario this past summer. You can find it anywhere.

Another is Montreal Smoked Meat, which is a specialty of Montreal. Surprising I know. Very, very tasty. You have to like meat of course to even consider it lol.

For something sweet, can't go wrong with Beaver Tails or Nanaimo Bars. The former is fried dough topped with any number of ingredients like chocolate spread, maple syrup, cinnamon, etc etc... Common in Ottawa. The latter is a specialty of my home province, British Columbia, and is a chocolate square with custard or icing in between and a wafer bottom.

Hmm.... I better get something to eat.

Eto'o, Zanetti,
If I could promote France, in five points it would be... :

1) We're a very welcoming country. If you say "Hi" to anybody in the street, people would be like at best "WTF ?" at least "What the fuck you lookin' at punk bitch ?"

2) Our marvelous countys. Our finest rapists and pedophiles came from eastern part of the country. If you go north you have a chance to see some boondocks with people talking a non understandable language and talking all day everyday about how they gonna make their cars uglier with horrible tunning. You can go down south, owww... How can't I talk about Marseille, Cannes, Monaco, Aix En Provence... A fake ass city, with many rich people who consider you like shit, and well know because of Pitt & Jolie' house in the area. Racist of the FN political make their best scores in election in those places.

3) With our president right now, a great place to be a foreigner or a foreigner descent especially if you came from africa or eastern europe :boogy:

4) People make strike cause today the sky is blue.

5) The marvelous city of Paris. Ghettos in the suburbs, and ethnics confrontations in the center of the city. But of course many very very nice lookings area no so far away where if you see a non-caucasian people, who aren't driving Mercedes (a movie star or sportman), you know he something like a sweeper or a junk collector

Otherwise, it's a very nice country to go, of course the country of the mode, love, cheese, symbol of successful integration and the Eiffel Tower :D
