There's an article at The Times regarding Blatter having initial discussions about the possibility of scrapping the offside rule as they did in hockey (IHF) some 10 years ago to make the game more 'exciting'.

Thoughts?

Yeah, I've read it today before, but really it maked me a bit confused.. the match without offsides wouldn't be TOO interesting like is now.. that would lose the quality of the match I think.. For me this rule is absolutely crap, so I hope won't happen, and I hope that it's just fucking rumour..

I cannot imagine any match like final, or anything like that important without offsides lol..

Perhaps yet another reason that Blatter's reign of terror should end, eh?

WTF?! You can't take out such an importnant rule. That's like replace the ball with a bouncy-ball, 18 players aside and 3 goals to get more people playing and more goals. It's retarded.

Agreed.

While we're on that, let's put an eyepatch on the goalie and tie one of his hand around his back too.

Lets discuss around this a bit. What does the offside rule add to the game.

My guess is without the rule every team would park the striker in the opposite box for the entire 90 mins. This would also lead to a defender staying back as a sweeper. Maybe it would lead to teams having to avoid a higher back line and play more of long balls.

I think it's interesting as is, Also hockey is very different, the field is really small and you have the ability to go around the goal which makes having an offside rule stupid. With football all this would lead to is players camping out at the 18 yeard box and midfielders booting the ball towards the players, if anything it would make the game less exciting and more static since defenders wouldn't want to push up and there will be big gaps all over the pitch.

Its a horrible idea. What you would have is sides parking 5/6 players in the box and hoofing the ball forward. The midfield will be totally negated. It would be hoofball and not football.

I'm totally against the idea. But i wouldn't mind seeing a game played without offsides, maybe a special cup in the preseason or something

I think scrapping the offside rule would not make the game more exciting, as some posted above it would only lead to long balls for the whole game.

I think if the offside rule didn't apply once the ball had passed the 18 yard line of the box, that it would be make it more exciting than abolishing it altogether. Strikers couldn't lurk around the box because waiting for balls to be lumped up to them, because they would be offside, as they would now. Once the ball reaches the 18 yard line (they could extend the line of the box to the sidelines, not the whole box, just the line so you know exactly when the ball is inside the 18 yard line) then players can run behind defenders. This would make it harder to defend and lead to more goals.

I wouldn't work like Ice hockey, you can be inside the area before the ball goes, as long as your not offside. Once the ball is played from within the area you can be in an offside position without being penalised.

For me this would add the element of excitement they are looking for, without turning the game into a long ball game.

No offside in the penalty box... workable and interesting. It would change Calcio, nothing to create controversies and easier for the linesmen.

Javier Zanetti,
its not even blatter who said those thing...;):)

well for me personally, football without offside rule, means it will be back to the old days when team play a WM formation with five striker just like in the begining of the century....:D
