How can you lead someone when you yourself know shit about the subject, while the others are masters?

Like a teenager teaches math Professors how to do math...really, poorest excuse ever.

its not just about technical skll, though, but also leadership, helping to develop people, guiding people, etc.

Like, look at goalkeeper coaches for example - often many of them werent amazing coaches. Hell, you could apply the same argument to Inzaghi - he was never an amazing striker - he had two seasons with more than 11 goals in Serie A, yet he's coaching one of the most attacking sides in the league in recent years now?

Coaches were all professionally trained. They took classes for years, got a certificate at the end. Then they had different experiences which players never have.

Kolarov doesn't. He is still a player and not a single day in another role. Let's imagine "grandpa" Kolarov telling "kid" Bastoni where to position himself to defend... :yao:

only in Italy. In the premiership, its very common for coaches to get at least temporary waivers for not having the official coaching badges.

Kolarov has played under a number of top coaches, nearly 100 international caps, and won two premiership titles. I'm sure Bastoni is more than happy to learn from him.

Just because he cant necessarily execute it now, doesn't mean he isn't still capable of reading the game and helping to improve people. Even the world's best chess, tennis, etc, players all have coaches - and often, those coaches were nowhere near the peak that the players themselves obtained.

As far as I can see, Gianluca Zappala our goalkeeping coach never played at any high level (cant find any history of him at least, if he did), Adriano Bonaiuti had 178 games at Padova as his peak, you think these guys are 'fit' to coach Handanovic by the same logic? Of course they are.

Being a coach doesn't mean you need to be capable of delivering *to the same level*. You need some basic skill and understanding - but Kolarov has like two decades of invaluable experience in football that any player would be able to learn something from.

From the other perspective, too, I'm sure Bastoni is happy to hear any and all advice, and will decide what he chooses to listen to or ignore.

to be honest, if he delivers what is claimed in the dressing room, 1m a year net isnt the end of the world. This team could probably do with some of the leadership he brings, imho?
I agree with this totally.

You know experience as a player and experience as a coach are two entirely different subjects, don't you?

You keep mixing the two terms "player"/ "coach" and call it "my logic". No, it's yours. If you need a coach, sign a coach. If you sign a terrible player and later use him in a coaching role, you are simply sugarcoating your mistake with fancy words like "leadership", "supervisor", whatever. Based on your logic we should extend Vecino too because he could teach the youngsters how to bring decisive goals, right?

you release this guy vecino(sell) vidal(sell) and sanchez(sell). because at beginning of the year budget all heir salaries are included and money is alocaed. so sanchez 9mill +4.5 for tax, vecino 3 mill+1.5 tax, vidal 7 mill+3.5 tax and kolarov 2 mill + mill tax. that is 33 million of the salar books and if an ge sold more money on top of this.

Not every player is capable of mentoring, developing, and guiding.

My point is, Kolarov for another 6 months isnt a disaster. There were articles from other players about how well liked Kolarov is in the team, how he helps to guide the young players, etc. That's worth the 1 mil gross it will cost us to keep him for the next 6 months.

as a good example of the contrary.

Nope, only in the PL you don't need a coaching badge even if it's just for a while. Literally every league within UEFA has this as a requirement. You can hire anyone to be coach but when you create the list of who's who at the pitch, the manager has to be a licensed individual.

@.h. my man speaking the truths here. Veteran presence in a team is super important. And it doesn't even matter if they play or not.

It sure does.

People forget that players of big clubs are spoiled millionaire brats and having a 30+ year old there that isn't fascinated with electronic gadgets or nightlife is an important factor in keeping their heads together.

Zlatan for example was this at Manchester United, then when he was out injured the dressing room was a shitshow. And it remains to this day a shitshow. Some people just have that effect. Cristiano for example does not. You can choose to follow him and he's going to be a great role model, but he's not a leader and he's not going to force you to follow him. On the other hand, Zlatan doesn't tolerate bullshit behavior so the likes of Pogba, Lukaku, De Gea, Martial and all the other spoiled brats couldn't really behave in their pathetic ways that followed after Zlatan wasn't there, effectively making the club a long term boy camp.

But even in that case, it's also important that said veteran has an actual role with the team. Just being there may not be enough. We all make fun of Berni and his status, and I am confident that this was the case with all the players as well. He was the court jester.
Kolarov is of course a different character, Dzeko is also his pal so this is why his presence is amplified. So basically if Dzeko is a leading personality in the spogliatoio, he also has Kolarov to back him up. I don't think Kolarov himself would be an important presence and I doubt he was as important last season. Acting like a mentor is different from being a leader. You can be both, neither or just one of those.

Werent there interviews specifically highlighting how Kolarov contributed off the pitch last season as well?

contribution? come on lets have veerans who are playing and world class to show the ropes to young ones when it comes to commitment and drive. he is good but what can you learn from veteran who is not even second option and probably does not even train 100% because he knows he will not be in first or second line up

yet again, its not about his performance now, its about his understanding of the game. he can probably explain to Bastoni how to create attacking opportunities, how to balance it with defense as well, kolarov also has a wicked left foot like Bastoni does...

That's probably where you're wrong. Coaches tend to love these players because of their professional attitudes. I'd be surprised if Kolarov doesn't give his 100% every training session even if he knows he isn't playing.

that was one of Mourinho's great achievements as Materazzi said - keeping the team motivated even though they knew they were rotation players and unlikely to ever really start.

Now it’s the day people call Vidic, Podolski, Forlan and Kolarov are good deals because he doesn’t even need to play, just a resounding resume and that’s it.

The famous IT quote, there’s nothing called a bug, anything is the new feature, isn’t it?

Let’s sign Ribery, Iniesta, Giroud then...the scouting job at Inter can’t be easier.

This is exactly the point with Kolarov. Brehme makes a point too but Kolarov was important last season aswell. Players commented his importance in the locker room last season and after.

Veteran training hard every day (without getting minutes in matches) makes it hard for the brats not to do the same.

Like the story how Handa slapped Esposito for being late in training and D'Ambrosio not speaking to the kid for a month because of that :D (probably exaggeration but point is still there). That's not bullying but setting the standards and showing the younger players how to behave.
