Aleksandar Kolarov (Serbian Cyrillic: Александар Коларов; born 10 November 1985 in Belgrade) is a Serbian footballer currently playing for Italian Serie A side Lazio. Kolarov plays as a left back and also represents the Serbian national team.

Club career

Kolarov began his career in his homeland of Serbia with FK Čukarički. He moved to OFK Beograd in February 2006. A year and a half later, in the summer of 2007, OFK Beograd sold Kolarov to Italian side S.S. Lazio for €800,000. Kolarov claimed that he was a long time supporter of the club.[1]

Kolarov's first goal for Lazio came at the Stadio Oreste Granillo in Reggio Calabria on 30 September 2007, as he hit a rocket from 40 meters to secure a draw against lowly Reggina.[2]

During his time in Rome, Kolarov has also gathered experience in the UEFA Champions League.

In his second season in Italy, Kolarov established himself as Lazio's first choice at left back, scoring a spectacular goal against Lecce at the Stadio Via del Mare.[3] It got even better for the Serb in the second Derby della Capitale of the season. With Lazio 3-2 up, Kolarov received the ball in defence from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and proceeded to run the length of the pitch virtually unopposed. Having run 85 metres, Kolarov then slotted the ball past a hapless Doni in the Roma goal.[4] He celebrated his goal with a Sign of the Cross in Serbian Orthodox fashion.[5]

For the 2009-10 season, Kolarov switched his shirt number from 3 to 11, wearing the number previously worn by fellow Serb Siniša Mihajlović, who possessed similar characteristics to Kolarov.

International career

Kolarov was apart of the successful Serbia under-21 side which reached the final of the 2007 U-21 Championships held in the Netherlands.

As a key member of that side, Kolarov was named in the UEFA Team of the tournament.[6] In the semi-final clash with Belgium, he scored a free-kick from long range.

The following year, Kolarov was apart of the Serbian side which competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In the same year, he also made his senior debut for the Serbian national team.

Technical characteristics

Kolarov is a left-back, who has a strong attacking side to his game. He is adept at shooting from distance and on long range set pieces.

Kolarov has been nicknamed the Serbian Roberto Carlos due to his long-range strikes and similar free-kick abilities to the Brazilian footballer, as seen in the decisive goal scored in the 2007 Under 21 semi-final match against Belgium.

Yep, would be exactly what we need in terms of offense down the left wing.

Kolarov and Pandev >>>> Chivu and Muntari

Zanetti's dribbles from LB means I cannot criticize him, but he is not able to swing in left footed crosses from that position, which makes him useful, but not dangerous.

I'm curious about Kolarov being the left attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1. How about you?

That would mean benching one of Eto'o, Milito Balotelli/Quaresma/Pandev

but well... there will be games without all of them

I really like to see Kolarov at Inter, but only if Cordoba leaves and Chivu will pick up the 'Cordoba-role'. I think Chivu is better at defence, but Kolarov is much better in attacking. And in that case Santon could remain as nr. 2 at LB.

i really don't get the kolarov excitement...
he has a good shot and is quick, but from what i've seen, his defense is not up to scratch...
his dribbling skills are also not that great...he just uses his speed..

whatever, hopefully he can elevate his game at Inter, but i really hope management loans him till the end of the season or something, instead of signing him to a 3-5 year deal with plenty money..

looks to me like another suazo/mancini type of trade in the making

I'm against this transfer, we can do better.
I feel this player would be just another Maxwell.

can you tell me a better LB at the moment that is as good as Kolarov and is coming off contract?

how can you compare Kolarov to Maxwell? in what sense?

Forget it man.

The most important thing to remember here is that it's not the best left back in the world, he is not 20, and he doesn't cost 5mln Euros. Because those are the only conditions that are acceptable :)

Well, both of them like to go forward and are better in attacking than in defence. But is Kolarov's contract expired next summer?

Both are crap defensively as opposed to much better in offense.
Mou wants defensively perfect fullbacks who can attack well, and Kolarov doesn't seem to be one of them.
However, i may be wrong, and if it's the case of his contract running out next summer, we could well get him as a backup for a more attack minded lineup.

Than the question is: Are there Inter-worthy players who have those qualities, plus more important: do they want to come to Inter?

It's impossible these days to find a left back like that, I think the only guy who can fall into that category imo is Ashley Cole, I think Kolarov would be a good acquisition and he's still young. Some players as they grow older become better defensively through experience and playing with the likes of Zanetti, Kolarov can really mature. Plus his shot is freakin awesome :D (Sorry had to say it.)

Well, Paulo Ferreira was one of his favourites and brought him to Chelsea, but if I don't have bad memories, he's not stellar defensively.

Inter to try Santon for Kolarov. Today there's Pandev.
The loan of the Inter player would fix everything, even for the player to win a spot in the National team.

Goran Pandev is at Rome close to home and he is ready to go to Milan in the coming hours to finalize all the details of which will be officially transferred to Inter on Monday. Tomorrow, he should be at the Pinetina where Inter train to find himself more prepare for Chievo. Goran could soon meet his former teammate Aleksandar Kolarov. Lazio, in fact, do not want to retain the left-footed Serbian. Lotito, however, asks for 15 million, a figure that has put a brake on Moratti. But the deal can still get through. And the key to a successful conclusion may be Davide Santon.

Greetings Santon
The Nerazzurri jewel, who today turns 19 years old, would be in the deal with Lazio in exchange for Kolarov. With Mourinho, Santon finds little space on the team and risking losing the World Cup, that's why a deal to the Biancoceleste could be useful for him. The problem here is what kind of deal for Santon at Lazio. Inter do not want anything that go beyond a loan, instead Lazio want a co-ownership."

Krhin and Destro In addition to Santon, Inter are still prepared to put on the scales of interest the young Slovian midfielder Krhin and the striker Destro to lower the economic adjustment given by Lotito.

Evaluation How did Moratti intend to avoid paying for Pandev ... through the operation Kolarov. Lotito's intention is cleared and the president of Inter is trying to meet the budgetary needs of the Biancoceleste, but within logical limits. Second, Kolariv is considered a more adequate solution than Chivu on the left side since the Romanian is better playing the central role. Also, the voices from the market in terms of Corodba and Materazzi, suggesting that the playing at the central defender will be asked to perform more often.
