Agree with both the above posts, it's time for him to get back to the basics and defend. This especially evident in the last two games. Perisic grows into his defensive responsibilities as the game progresses, Hakan is not particularly good defensively either. Bastoni needs to stay back and not drift to the center leaving his flank exposed and concentrate on long passes to the attack a la Bonucci.

Agree. Not sure if it's part of the tactics but apparently Perisic stayed back after 65" and Bastoni/Dimaro will just keep pushing up. Maybe that's Inzaghi's game plan. Keep Perisic on for as long as his stamina allows, but not exhaust him totally

Bastoni must be reading his press clippings from last year, another so- so performance.

Yeah, thinking the same. Maybe it's because Inzaghi lets to him to play closer to the goal at times, under Conte he barely left our half =)
This reads like an anit-Inzaghi post. I distinctly remember Bastoni playing almost as a left-back under Conte, dribbling in the opponents half, making runs ahead of Perisic, etc.

If anything, Bastoni seems much more restricted under Inzaghi and I miss him going forward.

Conte was clearly big on CBs going forward starting from the second half of his first season here. Not just Bastoni, but Godin and Skriniar were going forward a lot too.

The only player I genuinely have issues with thus far based on expectations and output. Should be performing at a much higher level.

Pretty strange Inzaghi loves subbing Bastoni off even when he's doing well. But the Fede+Perisic combo has always worked if we are chasing a goal

Something tells me we are going to try a back 4 soon and he might be the one left out

I doubt it. Inzaghi hasn't played with a back 4 since his first season at Lazio. I also have reservations about Dimarco as a lb. I think he would struggle defensively.

I'd like to try a hybrid, more like how Pep played with Barca. 4 in the back while defending and 3 in the back while attacking with Bastoni playing the LB and dropping back as a LCB while attacking. But on paper it would say 4-3-3.

We can try 4 man defence (with Dimarco LB) only if we had good pure DM which we don't have.

But Bastoni has so far been a lot worse than his last season's overall performance. So many mispasses which is unforgivable in his role.

Unfortunately it's not only him. DV and Skriniar are in the same boat. I suppose, the reason is the chaotic movement of the rest, which makes difficult for them to pass accurately when are under pressure. In addition, the lack of solid protection from midfielders and WBs doesn't help as well.

It could be one of the reasons, but I've noticed the players make that mistake even when there is a player around. It's just a poor decision making and I think it's more down to the players to make the right one at the time.

Barella made the same mistake which has led to the Sassulo's penalty. Against Atalanta there was a moment when Skriniar went forward and tried to act like Messi when there were two players right behind him ready to receive the ball. I think it was Barella who complained to him after Skrinjar lost the ball.

I see the same thing happened on the numerous occasions to us, specially when we have a chance to counter attack and a misplace pass, poor ball control or keeping the ball too much ruin it. Like the one against Sassulo where Perisic's pass failed to reach Correa from a close range and ruined a good counter attack for us.

Not worse than SDV in the first half against Sassuolo, but somehow Inza decided to sub exactly Basto

This might be dumb but to me, he just seems to be too tall to play as one.
Same height as Facchetti.

Marcos Alonso is around the same height, Maldini wasn't much shorter either.

It's not really that relevant if you're agile enough.
