Why would he leave Inter, the Champions League and our money for a 2nd tier English club? Aston Villa going down and calling on him to help them back up is the only viable situation there but I don't know how tied he feels to that club.
All in all, we are committing ourselves here on a very risky bet.
Pros?
- He's an experienced player.
- He can cross and do set pieces.
Cons?
- Never played in this position.
- Never played in this league.
- He's very old, coming from a league that doesn't pay attention and does not cater older players which is why they usually give up top level football when they are 32-33. In Serie A years (think dog years
), he's like a 39 year old.
- Doesn't speak the language.
- He's only played with Lukaku and Sanchez before and isn't familiar with anyone else. Probably just knows Conte by a couple of hellos between games, doubt there's any serious relationship there.
- He doesn't possess characteristics that are required for his new role, which are stamina, speed and positional awareness. His best assets during his career have been his long range passing and shooting and whenever he played as left back he was a liability. Which wasn't highlighted because the right back was equally bad defensively (Antonio Valencia was it?).
Lazaro's transfer makes sense compared to this one. Lazaro is a flashy winger who could potentially be slotted in a 3-4-3 in case we opt for that, or a 4-4-2 with wingers, or back to the 4-2-3-1. All formations used by Conte or Inter in the past years. But both are very bad transfers for the wing back spot.
If you want a wing back, get some guy from Serie A and convert him or get a quick loan deal.
