No way 16 is enough. We'll probably need to win both. Not even 17 will be enough I think.
But people here were claiming that AI calculation predicted that 16 pts is enough, which I found it ridiculous. Or maybe I missread what they wrote.

The bottom line is that if you count points you are going to get fucked. Play to win in every game and leave the points calculations to the commentators.

Choosing the games in which the team gives maximum effort and elects to play is a monumental mistake.

ok, so you'd prefer we go 100% vs leverkusen and rest against lazio? or burn our players out?

just trying to be clear what the message is here.

well, its based on numerous computer simulations. In my own experience in football manager, that was roughly the magic number too.

But the real world is different. 16 points assumes, probably, the seed 1 clubs go and do seed 1 shit - and it probably didnt bake in PSG, Juve, Milan, Real, etc, being dogshit and needing to catch up. its the first time (obviously) ever this format has been run, so no one really knows what to expect.

no one would have bet, of the top 8, arguably 4 or 5 of them are not the top 8 clubs in europe - its been a bit more 'brutal' in terms of scalps than anyone would have reasonable expected.

It's clear we weren't even trying, but my concern is when the fuck are we going to play at our peak? League game we're rotating. CL game we're rotating. All in the name of "resting players".

I feel like we're going to forget to play top level football, because we're on autopilot 24/7. Once in a while we need to "go all out".

Just got done watching the game and it was frustrating enough dealing with the lack of available broadcasts that weren't prone to buffering (jeez has this area of the internet gone downhill in recent years)...when I realized Inzaghi only started 3/10 normal outfield players, even ackowledging injuries for some, it was obvious to me that he was just following his established pattern of heavy rotation for away Champions League games in this part of the tournament. He basically rotated all three away games in the group stage last year as well if I'm not mistaken.

How much can we actually blame him? We know this squad doesn't have the proper depth, it's something we've complained about for years. That we actually do play fairly well defensively - even to the complete exclusion of any attacking threat - is a decent testament to our training. Regardless, we entered this game in 2nd place in the table, knowing our last two games beyond this were far more manageable-looking games. If we don't get at least 17 points, potentially 19, we only have ourselves to blame. And wherever we finish in the top-8 is frankly irrelevant as long as we finish top-8, it's entirely random which spots will get tougher matchups than others, so I don't consider it anything worth worrying too much about.

Lazio game is more important, the points in Serie A right now are far more vital to us than the points available yesterday. Inzaghi managed like it. I don't mind him being practical about things. His practicality in the Champions League helped us win the Scudetto in a runaway last season, and it's not the reason we failed to get past Atleti either. Didn't make for a fun game to watch, the result was deserved, but we had a loss to spare without it leaving us exposed to any grave danger in failing to qualify top-8, anybody hitting panic buttons about that needs to get a grip. Last night was the second game we've lost all season. 20 games, and we've lost twice. Maybe it's just a red-and-black thing. Whatever it is, deal with it and move on to Lazio. We're still perfectly fine where we are in this competition.

This is no small part as to why, at least in year one, the reshaping of this competition in this phase has been a huge success.

Exactly like that. Play every game 100% to win. Isn't sport just about that? From Tuesday until next Monday is enough time for recovery. We have enough good players to easy handle Lazio. But, Simone tactics is like "chicken". He does not allow players to show their talent, potencial... Who likes to watch the games we played in CL?

and in the same breath people constantly complain the lautaro, barella, etc are gassed, we have high injuries (Pavard, Acerbi, etc). You dont think those are related?

Yeeah, it'd be great if everyone could magically recover and play 100% every 4 days, but the reality is we have a fucking old team, they will take longer to reocver than other teams, and everyone here keeps saying we need more rotation because of our playing levels. If we play with the full team at 100% every time, we're gonna be losing more.

Under Inzaghi?
I do. I very much like us not crashing out of the group stages or having to put up with Europa League. Very much like us beating the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool, not being obliterated by City. Like being noticed in Europe again, and being touted as someone no-one likes to face, even have us as serious contenders.
Fucking loved being in a Champions League final, personally.

The reactions after a small, tight loss are, as is usual, very much unproportional to the actual situtation we find ourselves in. The coach with the highest win rate in the history of the club, suddenly doesn’t know his right hand from his left because he lost to the defending German champions, who, might I mention once again, have the lowest amount of losses of any club in a European top league since the start of the 2023 season, due to a 90 minute goal away from home.

By the way, even with this result, Football Meets Data has, based on simulations, us progressing in fourth, with a 79% chance of progressing in the top 8 (and yes, ahead of Milan and Juventus, Bubba you same old, tired, screeching record).

If that’s not good enough for you, I don’t know what to tell you.

Well, loss can happen but preparation and handling the match is an issue. Starting Darmian and Augusto is a proof that he was playing for a draw. Now we are in trouble. One more mistake and good luck in those qualifying extra games.

In some way, you are right. But, my point is about tactics. We have pretty good players on the bench and coach obligation is to mix them properly and adjust tactics for games. I think that Simone restrict players to play more relax, more ofensivelly... He is yelling on them all 90 minutes of the game. Prepare them on training and let them play. Only from time to time give some advice. That is why I never watch Atletico, because of Diego.

to be fair, we have a good record in the CL, we didnt have to win the match vs leverkusen, we should beat Monaco and Sparta, so it should be okay. It sucks losing a match but this one wasnt really a big deal. Inzaghi has fucked up against, e.g., Juve, but im meh about the CL Game

Stop panicking. Look first at who plays who and you'll see that 17 could still be enough. All we need to do is win the next match and then we can strategize and calculate. Too many variables right now.

Also so much drama when we lost by 1 goal in the last minute against Bundesliga's champion away. C'mon now, we can't just bully every team to a win. Play against quality, you better play correct. This time, we couldn't manage to get a favourable result, but luckily the results from previous games gave us this Get out of Jail card. Game 7 will be crackin'.

Weeks ago i had posted this.

Even though Leipzig are at a much better state than Leverkusen this season i fear the match against Bayer a lot more. Playing at BayArena is gonna be tough. Beating Leipzig at home would make our life a lot easier.

It was never going to be an easy game or a certain win. Even with a heavily rotated squad we were close to get a draw. In the end it didn't happen but it isn't a disaster. We have two winnable games so it's still in our hands. No need to panic.
