Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta: “Lukaku Wants To Stay But Will Return To Chelsea & Then We’ll See, We Have Faith In Inzaghi”

Inter CEO Beppe Marotta is not yet sure whether or not striker Romelu Lukaku will stay at the club past the end of this season, although he knows that the player would like to.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the CEO addressed the Belgian’s future, and also made clear that he still has faith in coach Simone Inzaghi although he expects more motivation and focus from the team.

Lukaku is still only at Inter on loan until the end of the current season.

Given that the Nerazzurri only agreed a one-season paid loan deal with the 29-year-old’s parent club Chelsea, they will have to make a decision on his future at the end of the season.

Moreover, it is not only up to Inter, or to Lukaku, as they will also have to find an agreement with the Blues on terms of a new deal if the striker is to return next season.

Asked if he expects the Belgian to stay, Marotta said that “Talking about it now would be premature.”

“In June, he’ll return to Chelsea and then it will be a new scenario before us, and we’ll see what we can do.”

“He wants to stay,” the CEO noted, “so definitely knowing what he wants, we’ll see if we’re able to go back to negotiations and negotiate a return here with us for next season.”

“The path we’ve been on the past couple years has been satisfactory, but the coach and the team must do more to solve the problem of inconsistency,” Marotta said.

“We, as a club, are always ready to support them, but it’s ultimately up to them to find a solution by talking and confronting one another over in training,” the executive continued.

Marotta noted that “We’ve done well in the cup competitions, but our most coveted goal is to win the Scudetto.”

“After yesterday’s defeat against Bologna, we’ll ask the coach to give the team even more focus and motivation so that we definitely don’t lose sight of our minimum objective for the season, which is qualification for the Champions League.”

“Our obligation is to do right by the fans,” Marotta emphasized.

“Simone Inzaghi is a top young coach, he has everything it takes to succeed and we’ve never lacked any faith in him,” the CEO made abundantly clear.

Of the remarks made by striker Lautaro Martinez after yesterday’s match, which saw the Argentine stress that the performance wasn’t good enough and that more work is needed, Marotta said that “We felt that he had the right attitude, and we appreciated what he said.”

“His words are proof that he has a sense of belonging, and that he feels deeply attached to the shirt,” he added.

“Now it’s up to the team to return to training, and then get themselves back on course.”

Marotta also addressed the situations of players whose contracts are set to expire at the club, noting that “At the moment there are a number players whose deals are expiring.”

“From a more emotional perspective, everyone should be rewarded with a new deal, but we have to make tough choices and we’re working to build a competitive team.”

“We have to thank the owners because, despite all the criticisms they’ve received, the club has never been lacking for anything from them,” he added.

Of a few recent incidents that have seen Inter players exchange word on the pitch during matches, Marotta said that “There’s total harmony and unity on the pitch, if there hadn’t been we would have taken different measures.”

“Everyone is rowing in the same direction,” he emphasized.

Everybody is essentially trying to row upstream without a paddle and no amount of Marotta window dressing is going to change that.

Marotta thinking/saying this team is scudetto worthy is a joke. Also that is what I was talking about few days ago in a match thread. Sure,Inzaghi will maybe prefer old fucks anyway but he have that pressure that he needs to perform so in his mind it's not that hard of a choice to go with old fucks instead of unproven youngsters.

Before the season IMO we were one of the Scudetto candidates for sure and that means the team is worthy of a Scudetto. What happened when the season started is a different story.

Funnily enough, he was saying we're not going for the Scudetto in 2021

Maybe for people thinking Lukaku was actually a great move.

Couldn't be me. Said this in first match thread:
Zero interest for this season so far.I hate almost every move/decision from this summer. And have a strong feeling Inzaghi will pay and get sacked cause of someone else mistakes.

That said, let's see how many games/minutes till I get fully invested again like every year...

Which is odd because why the fuck you sign Lukaku, on loan, otherwise (unless it was mostly Zhang idea as you have mentioned).

Not injured Lukaku would have been obviously a lot better than this...thing we've seen.

No, we wouldn't have been.

Things changed rapidly.

We've been scudetto candidates since Conte arrived.

We're still probably going to finish second. That's four top two finishes in a row.

I would put money on us not finishing second.

MAROTTA: ‘INZAGHI UNFAIRLY CRITICISED, UEFA COMPLAINT ON PORTO TREATMENT OF INTER FANS’
Inter director Beppe Marotta says Simone Inzaghi was ‘unfairly criticised’ after reaching the Champions League quarter-final and promises a formal complaint to UEFA after a thousand fans were denied entry to the Porto match.

The Nerazzurri had a 1-0 first leg lead thanks to the late Romelu Lukaku goal and defended it tooth and nail at the Estadio do Dragao.

The last four Italian teams to have visited this arena emerged defeated, but Inter’s goalless draw secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.

“We celebrate this passage that Inter had not achieved for 12 years, we give the credit to our coach, our players and the fans who were present,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.
“I also want to spare a thought for circa a thousand fans who were left outside the stadium even after regularly purchasing a ticket. This was unexpected and obviously we will make a formal complaint to UEFA to have a clear picture of what happened.
“I saw footage of families who were locked outside, children crying who had flown here from Italy. Football must represent unity and joy, so this is a bitter page in what was otherwise a wonderful evening.

“We had met with the local authorities this morning and they assured us that the fans would be allowed in even beyond those limits of the away section. Instead, this did not happen.

“These were for the most part families with children, who certainly weren’t here to perpetrate acts of violence, but to support their team. I don’t believe the situation was so serious as to ban their entry.

“We realise UEFA are not to blame, but we feel that with a formal complaint we can prevent this sort of thing ever happening again.”

There had been a series of calls this morning when FC Porto announced they would not let in any Inter fans to areas other than the away section, even if they purchased the tickets legally. It was then assured they would be let in as long as they did not have any Inter jerseys or scarves to stand them out, but as kick-off arrived, a thousand fans remained locked outside.

Inter once again proved that they step up on the big occasion, but it is in the smaller fixtures they tend to stumble, recently losing to Bologna and Spezia in Serie A.
“There has been a lack of consistency this season, but there seems to be no adequate explanation as to why. Overall, we can only be happy, as we are still competing on three fronts and that is to the credit of the coach – who has been unfairly criticised lately – and the team,” continued Marotta.
“The inconsistency has been more prevalent than last season, but we must also tip our hats to the extraordinary campaign that Napoli are having, which hasn’t been seen for many years.”

Are there any preferences for the draw going into the quarter-final, which will also include Milan and – hopefully – Napoli?
“On the one hand, we want an opponent of great prestige, on the other the best opportunity of going through to the next round. We shall see what the draw has in store for us.
“The Champions League is a tournament, not a real league, so you have to be on a good night in that particular game to go through and have luck on your side.”
Adequate explanation would be that the team does not give its best all the time and Inzaghi fails to motivate them against lower rated teams.

needs to be fired at the end of the season. His transfer window, even with the limited budget was dog shit, that a 15 year old could do.

I'm not fully agree. His biggest mistake was to hire Inzaghi. The latter pushed for Correa, and has chosen Lukaku over Dybala. He also blocked Correa's sale, which forced Sanchez out. Marotta and Ausilio transfers are not bad for the limited funds of Inter. Mkhitaryan, Hakan, Dzeko, Dumbfries, Acerbi, Asllani and Gosens are all decent players for their cost. He also could have sold Skrinar and got Bremer if Zhang didn't blocked the move. Let's recall that several years ago we spent money on the likes of Pereira, Medel, Hernanes, Johnatan, Taider, Belfodil and many others.

You have not missed anything. Nothing has happened.

It appears as though our management is as weak willed as our players and coach: they have all given up.
